Jagielka and Pienaar

Phil Jagielka was outstanding in the central defensive position today. Dominant in the air, excellent pace and reading of the game and unlike Stubbs, was looking to play the ball to feet. Furthermore, on occasions he lifted his head and carried the ball upfield himself finding the midfield with astute passes which is a rarity for an Everton centre half.
Regarding Steve Pienaar, when he moved to the right midfield/winger position, he displayed many of the attributes and qualities of Trevor Steven which can only be good as Tricky was god in my opinion.

Totally agree. Pienaar is starting to look the real deal, time will tell if jags has the class but now is the time to see if he’s got what it takes.

Jagielka’s natural position is centre half so he had no problem coming in and doing a good job. Considering he’s only 5ft 11 he’s very good in the air and as you said Steve he looked good on the ball and passed along the floor instead of hoofing. I think his future is at right back ahead of Neville like but he is defo a good back up centre half.
Pienaar is quality plain and simple. People where going on about his size at the start of the season but I always knew he turn out a good player. By no means a natural out and out winger but he offers alot more than a winger. He offers pace, passing ability, energy, skill and brilliant game intelligence. A typical Ajax player. People where calling for Shandy but for me Stevie P is the better all round player.

Maybe the answer is to play Yobo at right back, and Lescott as CB with Jagielka and Baines down the left.

I’ll have to agree with Connor, schillo (as he’s known in Holland) is a real intelligence player. last wee the were guys disagreeing that Pienaar shouldn’t be signed. The kid just proved why he’s South Africa’s wonder kid! Lets be realistic, Pienaar has atributes that many of our sqaud players dont have. Sign him before regret we intoduced him to the English game. This is were his heart was since his Ajax Cape Town days.

Couldnt agree more. Pienaar was everywhere on the pitch and he has been in the right place at the right time. DM must sign this man as soon as possible. Whatever system we play next game, I hope he’s in the team.

Good comments guys, i’m also obviously delighted that Pienaar is proving himself exactly the player i’d hoped he would be. At least it seems a future signing fee was agreed a the time of agreeing the loan move! Shandy isn’t going to get another game in my opinion. Who, if anyone, we sign in January is interesting. I think we’ll be fine for forwards but we could do wit a right-sided Lescott equivalent (ie a central defender who can turn his hand to right back) and whether there’s anything in the Downing stories i’m not sure but another midfielder with a bit of class wouldn’t be amiss.
As for Jagz, i think alot of the criticism has been unfair. For what we paid for him and his flexibiliy i think he’s a real asset and the fact that he looks an accomplished centre half is good as when Yobo goes all African Nations Cup on us that’s where we’ll want him to slot in.
I think a word for Neville is due here too. Put back in at right back he put in some great tackles and some superb crosses yesterday.
Great to see the Yak working hard, tackling back, making good runs and scoring again yesterday. The more he plays the better he’s fitting in with the team.
Also great to see Vaughany back and firing too.
All in all, despite the late late show, a very good performance, let’s hope for another victory on Thursday!

Does anyone know the deal with Pienaar ?
is there an option to buy at the end of the loan and if so how much ?

I would like to see Delron Buckley move in January. I would like Moyes to have a go at a player by the name of Lance Davids. His also South African, with the potential to be the next Fabregas. He was rated as one of the best found talents in Gemany with TSV1860 München few seasons back, that same same season they got religated. All the big clubs went for him ,but opted not to go due to not wanting to warm Bayen’s bench. He now plays for Djurgårdens IF in Sweden. He played a huge part in their title challenge, but failed at the last hurdle. He’s the South African under 23 captain and I can really see this player bringing some dept into our sqaud. Best of all, it’ll cost us almost nothing to buy him from Djurgårdens.

Dave, his on a one season loan deal, we have the option of buyig him for 2.5m pounds at the end of his loan spell. If he continues with his current form, he could be the best snapped bargain in a very long time!

Ricardo
thanks for the feedback,
At that price we surely have to secure his signature now and avoid a repeat of last seasons fiasco with Manny

Steve, Pienaars performances speak for themselves however, I have to agree entirely with your fine assessment of Jagielka. I think the quality of his play yesterday may have gone unnoticed by some. His performance at centre back yesterday was the complete package for all the reasons stated. I was beginning to worry as to how we’d perform when Yobo heads off to the ANC but it is clear now that Jagielka is more than capable of filling the void.

Says in the paper today Justin Hoyt may be coming in Jan, good replacement to Hibbert, maybe Tranmere will take him off our hands.
Pienaar had a horrendous time in Germany so with games under his belt his confidence is renewed and fitness is coming on.
Jags could be a replacement for Stubbs in the long term and the need to buy a .
replacement will not be necessary.
I thought the Yak did well yesterday, and Vaughan is the most talented player at the club in my opinion.

Pienaar has improved game by game since the confidence boost of a goal against Boro. Standing at the back of the Bullens yesterday, I watched him work tirelessly, up and down, left flank, right flank. What impressed me the most was his ability to avoid the obvious pass and play cute little balls in between and behind defenders. It doesn’t seem to matter who he is linking up with, Arteta, Lescott, Jagielka, he worked well with all of them. It’s amazing what a bit of confidence can do.
Which brings me nicely to Jags. An outstanding performance at CB. Strong in the challenge, good in the air, read the game well, and excellent distribution! That’s right, excellent distribution. This lad couldn’t pass a ball 5 yards when he was in midfield, but feeling more comfortable at CB his confidence grew and he played 20 yard passes to feet. Isn’t it amazing what a player can do with a bit of confidence! I haven’t had a chance to examine the Birmingham goal yet, so I’m not sure who was at fault for that, but apart from that blip and our inability to get the second goal while we were on top, we were pretty good yesterday.
Delighted for Vaughany too! He gets a cheer from the Everton faithful just for scratching his arse, so it was wonderful to see him cap his return with a well taken goal. However, my man of the match had to be Carsley. From the moment he polaxed De Ridder with a full blooded ariel challenge in the opening 10 minutes he was outstanding. He’s the type of player we love in England. Wears his heart on his sleave, knows what his limitations are and plays within them. He was constantly breaking up play and sticking his head in where it hurts. He’d already given us a warning that he was in a scoring mood with the dipping volley that landed on the roof of the net, then the goal! What a strike! Get in! I have Lee to thank for the 4 inch gash down my left shin, caused by the seat in front during the manic celebration of that winner.
So, despite sitting in the crappest seat in the ground (I say sitting, I had to stand for most of the game as the seat in front dug into my shins it was so close), I thoroughly enjoyed the game and the football that we played. Musn’t forget a special mention for Cahill, Osman, and Yaks who all worked hard and had good games.
More of the same please lads! COYB!

I agree about Pienaar,he looks a great player and getting better with every game! As for Jags,I think he will become a very decent player for us but at the moment he just always seems to be a second from disaster and I think looked a bit confused at times yesterday due to the amount of positions he has played, however, the same would have been said for Yobo a couple of seasons ago and look at him now! Last of all, just want to say how brilliant Carsley was yesterday, not just his goal but the whole game,he seemed to cover everyone at some point and was fantastic while Yobo and Jags were finding there feet together and the period where our midfield were being out-muscled!

I think Moyes should think about a 3-5 -2 formation.
I don’t think that Lescott should be left back and with Yobo, Lescott and Jagielka, we have players who can take the ball up field and pass to feet. Baines as Left wing back would work and Neville, or Osman could play right.
Worth thinking about?

It just shows what can happen if you play people in their strongest positions. My friend who’s a Sheff United fan assessed the signing of Jagielka by saying he was fantastic if you were going to play him in defence, preferably the centre, but not up to it in midfield. After a couple of months with us that looks 100% accurate. Pienaar has obviously been a right midfielder the whole time, the problem is that Moyes insists on keeping Arteta out wide. I like Moyes and I still think overall he does a good job, but it really frustrates me to see players out of position and struggling for it. Arteta of course has played well out wide, but a guy with his talent should be running the show in the middle. Carsley, Arteta and Cahill playing through the middle means we can finally forget about Phil Neville there and let him get on with playing his only comfortable position of right back.
As for the Delron Buckley call, I agree with the need for a natural left sided player, I’m not sure Buckley is quite good enough. I’d prefer Etherington, despite his inconsistency, and hope we could be just what he needs to play regularly. We could also get him effectively free if he was a makeweight in an overpriced West Ham bid for Andy Johnson, who I like, but we really don’t need, given that we’re a much better team with only one out-and-out striker being supported from midfield.

One player who deserves a mention on his form this season, but is usually forgotten (so solid and reliable is he now) - Tim Howard! He saved us again yesterday a few times and does most weeks. He shouts and keeps the defence on their toes as well. I think Tim is having a great season for us.

he is pulling off great saves week in week out - when the toffees fall asleep for periods of most games
i have great confidence in him

I think Buckley is the player that can bring some balance to the left side. Does any one knows Buckley was always first choice ahead of Quinton Fortune? that for says a lot. In Germany he’s known as little Ronaldo, that for he’s Brazilian style of running at defenders. Even Ferguson was interested in his services. Let’s take him on a loan deal, I’ve got nothing to loose!

Didnt we have Buckley on trial last year ?
If we didnt sign him then i cant see us going back for him
