Can we afford to lose our African stars

Comments (11)

Pienaar and Yak are really starting to settle into our team and my only concern is the AFCON in Angola next year. I'm South African and support my country, but would rather see Pienaar in our blue shirt. Yobo, Pienaar and Yak are starting to really shine for us and we can't afford to lose them come January.

If they do decide to go, lets just hope their teams get early exits (I know this sounds weird coming from a South African). We need to keep them and push for a top 4 finish. I live in South Africa and still don't know why AFCON takes place in January-February!

Yakubu’s been dropped by Berti Vogts so hopefully thats good news but Yobo and Pienaar will be big loses. I dont think Victor will go if im honest. Its to early for him and they have some good strikers in Martins, Utaka, Kanu and Makinwa.

I think we might just have to revert to 4-4-2 for a while. Yak if he stays upfront with Vaughan or AJ with Cahill dropping back into midfield and Osman replacing Pienaar on the left flank. Jagielka or Stubbs can fill in for Joey at the back.

My ex-misses is south african, and the only pienaar she knows is Francois !!! - Possible factor in her being the ex methinks...

well, that and the unrealistic attitude in life and the unnatural expectation that people of different races are there to serve her !!!

Still .....

I wouldnt be too sure about vic not going mate, look at the alternatives you mention, good players, but hardly world class, AJ + Vaughany will hopefully both be fit and available to us though

Pienaar ? I’m a huge fan, but I believe it would be the quality of our football rather than our results that will suffer. when he goes,I’d settle for a few weeks of that if we could get him to sign a 5 year deal

Many of the teams now are affected by the AFCON, and yes us included. We have some good depth now though that if all are fit the AFCON will be a loss but not devastating. It will give some others a chance to get some play time too - which isn’t always bad.

By the way I have read some of your other comments on SA players and as a South African think you may have some Bafana tinted specs there mate... yes some have talent but international class no.. the fact that Buckley is one of our better players is an indictment on the side.. and I actually like Buckley. But he is not good enough for us.

I agree with you though - Pienaar is the best we have and with McCarthy are our only 2 international class players. The fact is SA struggle to beat any other side in the world, esp as McCarthy is pants when he wears the SA shirt.

Re Pienaar - he is awesome and a great link to the forwards - I don’t think we have seen the best of him yet.

David, mate I think you’ve got it all wrong. Why would Buckley have been first choice ahead of Quinton Fortune for years now. The fact that Fortune played for Man U and not coming close to Buckley for the wide left position says I lot to me! 1 thing people should know about South African players is that they idolize English football, and that why they always do good once given the chance. I’ll bet my gold teeth Buckley can be bigger than Mc Carthy, Fortune and Bartlett!

Ricardo, the AFCON tournament is in Ghana, not Angola. Just in case you are planning to go......

I reckon Pompey will be worst hit.

Ricardo, lol.. thats what’s great about sport - we all have our own opinions... on this one we clearly disagree. If you want to compare Buckley with Fortune then you only have to look at Fortune’s career over the last few years to see why Buckley is ahead of him in the queue.

In any event Fortune played central for SA as the play maker but never fulfilled his potential for club or country. Maybe that had to do with injuries to some exent.

For RSA I agree on one thing: Buckley outperforms McCarthy every game - mostly due to wanting to smash Benni over the head every time he misses anohter golden chance. For me it comes to the fact that best players in SA at the moment just are not world class and I feel Everton are at the level where I expect new players to be bringing that tag with them. NSNO and all that.
Maybe this conversation belongs i another forum. Sorry Non Saffa’s... But its great having one of our own to shout for in the team hey !!!!!!

We’ve got cover lads - stop worrying.

AJ for Yak
Vaughan for Anichebe
Stubbs for Yobo
Gravesen for Pienaar.

with a bit of a shuffle in the middle, its sorted.

Its frustrating that we will be without the services of yobo, pienaar, yakubu, anichebe and bamingbuoy.

Its just as well we have cover in specific departments to cover for these absentees so that our season does not derail to any degree. No doubt moyes can tinker and the players will come back stronger for it with renewed appetite.
