Knockout stage qualification
Comments (4)
Moyes has said it was a great performance from us and he HOPES we qualify. As far as I can work out Everton have definitely qualified.
There are ten games in the group, which means a maximum of 30 points are up for grabs if every game is won. But AZ and Zenit drew, so there is a maximum of 28 points up for grabs.
If Everton already have 6 points, there are only 22 points left for other four sides. 22 divided by four is an average of 5 and a half.
Therefore Everton will definitely finish in the top three and qualify for the knockout rounds.

In all likelihood, 7 points is going to be needed to guarantee qualification. Some wags last night were pointing out that the bottom two teams on 0, and goal difference, meant everton have qualified. What they failed to understand, was that Nuremberg have only played 1 match, thus could still finish on 9 points, and above everton.
I would still expect larissa to win their last two games against easier opposition, and nuremberg to possibly pick up 2 wins also. So I fear that 6 points is not enough and we need to press on.

Larissa lose there next 2 - finish on 0 pts
We lose our two - 6 pts
Nurnberg beat ZSP and Larissa, draw with AZ - 7pts
ZSP beat us and lose to Nurnberg - 7 pts
AZ beat Larissa and us, draw with Nurnberg - 8 pts
Therefore we can finish 4th BUT only if we lose both AND Larissa lose both.
One more point and we’re there. We’re probably there anyway, as I can’t see Nurnberg avoiding defeat to AZ and ZSP.
