News from the Netherlands

Comments (9)

Just been talking to a colleague and Dutch TV have just reported that Zenit St. Petersburg have just become the first non-Moscow club to win the league in 20 years. Dick Advocaat is the manager which explains why it is on Dutch news but not a mention even on BBC.co.uk.

Second, one of the debates on the football yesterday was the rise of Roda JC and how they are not the prettiest team to play against. In fact they are a bunch of thugs. Seems like their manager has imposed his influence, a guy called Raymond Atteveld! He was never a dirty player for us... was he?

Zenit is our toughest match by far, Russians are notorious bad travellers so we still should get a point to ensure qualification 3 points would be superb though against quality opposition. This is the club Arshavin plays for and I am looking forward to seeing him albeit hoping too he has a quiet night with an odd bit of magic away from goal to show Moysey he should buy him.
Why should BBC report who won the Russian League? Not of particular interest to the majority of people.
I remember Atteveld as a fairly useless player think he commited a fair few fouls in his brief time here.

Atteveld was god awful, didnt we sell him to someone like Bristol City. I recall him crunching a few players in a tackle myself

Wilkpedia

Atteveld played for HFC Haarlem before moving to England to join Everton.

He made his debut for Everton on December 2, 1989 against Coventry City in a 2-0 home win for Everton. During his career at Everton he made 41 league appearances from the outset and a further 10 as a substitute, scoring only one goal. Atteveld is one of three Dutchmen to have played for Everton, the other two being Sander Westerveld and Andy van der Meyde.

Atteveld was one of the first foreigners to get a regular first-team place in the Everton squad although he struggled to make a name of himself in the English game. Atteveld is remembered by Evertonians for stripping down to his underpants during an end of season lap of honour and throwing his kit into the crowd.

I remember when Atteveld was signed and I thought ’Dutch!’ He’ll be able to pass it, control it and never give it away. Sadly he turned out to be the one Dutch player who could do none of those things and not much else besides. And didn’t he come along with an equally useless bloke called Stefan Rehn?

Yeah but Stefan Rehn went on to be a superstar when he left us.

He went back to Sweden and was captain of Gothenburg, who won the league something like 5 times on the bounce. He also went to the World Cup in 1994 and helped Sweden finish 3rd!

At least he never threw his underpants into the crowd too.

I can only decribe Stefan Rehns treatment as disgracfull. I saw the fella many times for both club and country. He dominated games with excellent distribution and very sound positioning, super first touch (remember them?) and was never given a run of games. Jimmy Armfield, not one to get carried away, described Rehn in his radio commentary as a "very usefull addition to the squad". He enjoyed living in Southport and playing for Everton. The exact opposite of Atteveld ? with or without underpants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
