Can anyone remember Everton scoring with a goal like this before.. If so, when was it?

I was at Goodison Park when Claus Thomsen (!) scored from a deflected overhead kick against Derby. We lost. I didn’t have a good view of it because the goal was in the Park End and I was in the Gladwys, I think.

I remember David Unsworth smashing in a mid-air scissor kick against Aston Villa......

David Smallman in the mid seventies, can’t remember the opposition, possibly Wrexham in the FA Cup?

Steve Watson was the last I can remember at Bolton, January 28 2003. He was on the edge of the box when he hit it. Not exactly a pure bicycle kick but near as damn it. It’s in the 125 Premiership Goals DVD. I doubt though that many will beat Tim’s for sheer drama, and dare I say, technical perfection. It was a sweet sweet strike!

No sooner had I posted about Steve Watson, than my son Daniel (aged8) reminded me that Cahill himself did it as recently as May 15th 2005, also at Bolton. And just to prove what a player he is, he did it with his left foot! Anyone who has the 04-05 season review DVD will find it in the Goal of the Season Top Ten at number 5 in special features. How quickly we forget!

Seem to remember Duncan McKenzie doing something similar, but that was a long time ago...

Brian McBride scored one during his loan spell with us.
I think it was against Sunderland at home, and if I remember rightly the connection was nowhere near as good and it took a deflection on it’s way in.

Believe it or not Paul Rideout scored an overhead kick but that must have been 10-11 years ago. I seem to remember it gave us a 1-0 away win at the end of the season against Ipswich or something?

If I remember, Cahill himself actually scored the first goal using a bicycle kick in the last game of 2004-5, vs. Bolton (away). Anybdoy remembered it?

I’m pretty sure Kevin Sheedy did an overhead kick in the early ninties and it looked ace!! I must of been about 12 when I saw it and have not seen it since. Memory fades.

I well remember Sheedy?s goal - it was against Man City in a live TV match. I think it was January 1991 - shortly after Howard Kendall came back for his second spell as manager.

Brian Hill- yep, Dave Smallman was the one that came to mind for me too; but I think it was v Sheff Utd (he’d well gone - retired, in fact, by the time we played Wrexham).
Certainly remember him scoring it into the Street End.
Lovely player.

Jim Pearson scored one just like Tiny’s in a 2-2 draw at QPR in 1974. I was right behind the goal, and someone behind me yelled "Bye bye, Big Joe!" amid the celebrations when it went in. And indeed Joe Royle was sold not long after. Unfortunately Pearson proved to be a bit of a disappointment - that goal was probably the high point of his time in a blue shirt.

Paul Rideout away at Bolton in about 94 or 95

Yes, Lee Spargo, well recalled mate! Forgotten all about it. Last minute equaliser jobby, I think, at the same Burnden Park "Supermarket" end that the Blues fans were congregated in. Joke of a ground. October 95, I think. Always get this game mixed up (probably due to the fact that I was suitably caned at both!) with the FA 3rd Rd game we played there in Jan 94 (Walker was appointed the night before) but I think Rideout gave us the lead in that one.

I can’t add any more than has already been said but the first overhead kicked goal I remember seeing was scored by Dennis Law, on telly, in the sixties. At the time I played for Dunlop’s in Speke and tried it myself a few weeks later. I was in hospital for two days and off work for three weeks with a cracked bone in my neck!
I never tried it again. Well done Tim!
(i didn’t connect with the ball by the way!)
