Stitched up by Leahy?

Comments (24)

I noticed this week whilst leafing through the Echo a supplement in the housing section concerning Project Jennifer. Many will know that this is the name that has been given to the proposed regeneration of the Great Homer Street / Scotland road area of the City.

As the urban sprawl of city centre regeneration continues to gather pace it would appear that this historical and neglected enclave at the foot of Everton brow is earmarked for some much needed tlc to revert the effects of countless years of neglect and social and economic deprivation.

What caught me from the contents of the supplement is the apparent appetite of buyers to invest in the residential aspects of the scheme, driven by the fact that Tesco have plans to build a superstore in the immediate vicinity. The loop site proposal has been well documented on these pages and numerous others on the internet, discounted as being unworkable by the board of Everton FC and its chief advisor - Sir Terence Leahy. Would this decision be based on the fact that if Tesco is to get its wishes and that is the construction of a mega superstore - Tesco Extra in the growing conurbation of Kirby, then it needs an able partner?

Tesco are not known for their philanthropy with a corporate policy that is driven by growth and the ability to spot the next big thing. Project Jennifer should be the rightful home of Everton FC, after all Everton for Everton, so why is it that Sir Terry advises relocation to Kirby ?

I think its because he is the Chairman of Tesco and his company stand to make money from it, or am i just being too simple on this one ?

Right with you again Steve.
Tesco are the dominant partner and like any partnership the dominant partner usually gets what they want and the other partner is left holding its coat tails.Tesco Terry can run rings around Kenwright and Wyness which about sums up our board who keep selling of our heritage to cosmetisise the accounts.

I suggest anyone who has doubts about Tescos getting involved should check out our latest accounts. We cannot afford to build a stadium without Tesco so we have to do what they want to say, sad but that?s the way it is. Blame our management in the 90’s I say, when we went from being a top 3 club to relegation fodder with no financial clout.

Another point is that Tesco are a business, they have to make money and will do anything to do it.

The reality is that unless we get financial backing from another source all the other projects and plans for a new stadium are out of the window as we simply cant afford it.

Following on from Gavins comment. Who has been a board member since the 90’s? Blue Bill! I see today that suitors are checking out Derby( be it Disney Corp!) surely we are more attractive to an investor? Kenwright is on an ego trip- I hate the liar.

stitched up by wyness, kenwright more like.

Wyness held talks with lcc and told them we need space for a 75000 seater stadium, which we know will not fit anywhere in liverpool, why the f**k do we need a 75000 seater stadium when a 55000 will be more than enough to help get us to were we want to be.

It seems that wyness is now trying to do whatever it takes to get us to kirkby, if theres any justice in this, the whole deal will collapse and wyness will get the bullet, imo the sooner the better.

If I was a substantial investor and wanted to buy the club I would simply leak it to the press - I think your overstating his power and deviousness .....and diluting your argument!

Oh my God!!!

Terry Leahy is a passionate Evertonian, in his position of power he is trying to help Everton. Can it not be a mutually beneficial arrangement for both?

At the end of the day Tesco make profits of 1 billion + each year ? THEY DON?T NEED EVERTON!!

Some of you talk as if we?re the ones doing Tesco a favour!!!

Chris Otway,

Just because ?investors? are looking at Derby, you take that as a reason to assume that Kenwright is on an ego trip ?

Stop talking shite, man.

This "any opportunity to moan about Kenwright, Wyness & Co. no matter how tenuous" bollocks needs to stop. It really does.

I am still in a bit of a quandry here. If there is an oppertunity for a new staium at Scotland Road I have a question.
WHO WILL PAY TO BUILD THE STADIUM????

Gavin - just because Tesco stand to make money doesn´t mean that EFC do... and just because EFC don´t have enough money to do anything else doesn´t mean that it is the right option. Hobson´s choice is no choice at all mate!

EFC can stay at Goodison for the present.

´To be honest, if there was a money making option for EFC then there would be any number of partners wishing to join up with us - the Kirkby option is simply for me a matter of Wyness and Kenwright going for the first available option... Wyness should refund every penny of salary he has received - outsourcing and Kirkby neither are effective long-term solutions as far as I am concerned.

Unfortunately only the Kirkby move has a business plan. The redevelopment of Goodison isn’t feasible and whatever location the council find e.g. Loop they are sites only - who is going to build the stadium and who is going to pay for it ? The costs of a new stadium are hundreds of millions and as everyone knows the costs when it actually is built will be a lot more than any figures touted about now. Everton have not the finances to bankroll on their own. If some billionaire or consortium wants to buy us, where are they ? Doesn’t matter about Wyness or Kenwright . If you are a billionaire and want Everton, do really think Kenwright et al would be able to keep you from at least making it known that you are interested. I don’t want to go to Kirkby. I want a great stadium in the city, but I can’t see how it is going to happen. There is no Plan B - there are just sites and artists impressions - that is not enough .

I’ll answer Mick Mac, the same people that are going to pay for the Kirkby shithole; Everton Football Club, and Tesco need Everton to get planning permission from KBC as a sweetener providing a sports stadium with their humungous superstore (biggest in Uk or Europe?) if every tenant in the affluent shangri la that is Kirkby shopped there it would still be half empty! Billy Bullshitter and Greedy Arse Wyness are just an ego trip and a self interested conman crook respectively.

I think the answer to your question Peter is that Tesco or anyone else would be unable to utilise land earmarked for residential use for a football stadium. I would love nothing better than to relocate to Everton, but just a casual glance at the topography there and all can see how hilly and lacking in big wide open spaceslarge enough to accomodate a stadium. Forget the loop thats a no go on so many fronts so even if Tesco is able to help drive regeneration there isnt enough space for a supermarket stadium and housing. The board would have no plan without Tesco/Kirkby so I think its time to stop dreaming and put our energies into ensuring Everton kit the Kirkby stadium out with the best furbishment and matchday experience.

Dear Tom
When you have a serious comment to make please come back anytime. Meanwhile as Kenwright and his gang are the main shareholders in our club any discussion about future financial input is hardly tenuous

Phil Griffin - Tesco need Everton if they are to build their £1m+ profit per week store in Kirkby. That is part of the deal. It has nothing to do with our club as a business compared with Tesco.

It is a red-herring to say that Leahy is an Evertonian. He hasn’t got where he has by doing anything other than putting Tescos firsty, second and third. Where being an Evertonian does help is that he can take over the project from those clowns Kenwright and Wyness and ensure that it happens and convince the naive that this is good for Everton because Blue Terry says so. Worse luck.

Alex - I understand what your saying mate but I was at the match with his brother for the final home game of the season v Portsmouth. His brother is a die-hard blue and was nearly in tears at the prospect of us securing UEFA Cup football.

While I understand Terry has a duty to Tesco’s shareholders I know for a fact that he has Everton’s best interests at heart. To say they need Everton to secure planning permission is missing the point as they could build a store anywhere they like and make huge profits - I repeat THEY DON’T NEED EVERTON and they certainly DON’T NEED KIRKBY!!

First off, let,s stop clutching at straws to stay in the city.Liverpool as a city, has done nothing for us ,and even if they came up a site for us ,we can,t afford to pay for a stadium from our own coffers.
Warren Bradley has already stated that L.C.C. won,t give us land for free, so E.F.C. would have to find money for land and a stadium.
I,ve been watching Everton for 50 years and quite frankly I,m just about fed up to the teeth walking through dog shit alley(Walton) to get to the game.As far as I,m concerned Kirkby is a fantastic opportunity for us to re-establish ourselves as a major footballing force.
Oh and for those of you who actually put into print the derogatory thoughts you have on Bill Kenwright ,would you say them to his face? Somehow I don,t think so.

Mike

Maybe if our board would sit down with the people that matter and discussed finances regarding the loop to see if it was possible then people would stop clutching at straws, is there proof that a loop stadium cannot be financed? No because our board wont discuss it.

Also id love to have a one on one with kenwright because id tell him exactly what he deseves to hear, that hes an embarrasment and that he was responsible for some of the most ludicrous, cringeworthy episodes in the history of our great club, people may want to heap praise on kenwright but i certainly won’t.

Andy Mckenzie ? why do you persist with this ?Loop? nonsense!!

Cllr Bradley said in a statement that he and the council would do everything they could to find a viable solution to Kirkby and suggested the ?Loop? proposal could be it.

In his very next sentence he then says ?but I?m not prepared to saddle the taxpayer with a £50m debt??

Why do people on this site continue with this utter lack of grasp on reality!!!

22   Posted 16/11/2007 at 13:55:06

phil

i asked a question, is there proof that the loop site cannot be financed?

what are tesco contributing to kirkby?even though we got told by wyness that £50m would be contributed by tesco.

if you want to see my post as a utter lack of grasp on reality then thats fine because thats just my opinion.
Phil Griffin
23   Posted 16/11/2007 at 14:02:15

Maybe I was bit harsh Andy ? apologies!!

The fact remains that what Bradley is saying is that Everton will have to pay for any land within Liverpool they want to use for the stadium.

Now he?s used a ball park figure of £50m, so let?s assume it?s £50m.

Do Everton have £50m to buy land? This is before we even start talking about the stadium etc. Anyone wishing to invest into the stadium would want development opportunities i.e. Tesco. The ?Loop? site would barely fit a stadium onto it never mind other developments!!

I just think it?s a complete non-starter and Bradley is trying to con the voting public into believing he is pulling out all the stops to get a viable alternative. Ask yourself this, what has the council been doing for the last 5 years since the Albert Dock fiasco? Why was the ?Loop? only mentioned just before the ballot?

In my opinion it was done at that time as they new it would be too late to de-rail the the Pro Kirkby voters whilst at the same time look as if they were doing everything they could.

no worries phil, this subject always brings fierce debate.

Look i’ll be honest im not an expert when it comes to finances and stadium moves and all im asking for is the board to sit down with the people that matter, how can you dismiss something without exploring it, its potential alone deserves more focus.

Also im not trying to provoke arguments if thats how my point may come across sometimes, i just want whats best for the club like everyone else, kirkby imo is the wrong option.
