The Mail Bag

Everton 7 - 1 Sunderland

Comments (51)

For quite a long time now Michael has complained that a David Moyes team has never thrashed an opposing side.

Was it four or five goals you wanted Michael? I'm not gloating, Michael was quite correct, it was about time we stuffed someone.

Great result and with a fully fit squad it now looks like Everton are firing on all cylinders and doing the impossible, competitivly competing in both the Premiership and Europe.

Great results, improved football, is this what Moyes has been building to over the last five years, have we finally reached that next level?

It was a great result Dutch, and a great performance, and some absolutley great goals. I have indeed been asking for this for a long time, Dutch ? and judging by the slaming I get from many fans for daring to ex[pect such wonders from our charismatic manager ? I was in a small minority who believed it was possible. I expected it: Moyes has finally delievered.

AND ABOUT BLOODY TIME TOO!

75,000 seats? They're having a laugh, aren't they? Many more games like today's, and that won't be nearly enough.

Did Alan Irvine spend 5 years wispering into Moyes ear, hold them back Davie, no need to get another goal.

Only kidding. Like Dutch says Moyes has spent 5 years building a team this good.

Not bad at all...incisive attacking football from the preferred 4-5-1 formation, multi-million striker bags a brace, Cahill back doing his thing, AJ given a quarter of an hour and a confidence-boasting goal and Lescott looking unaffected by Wednesday’s humiliation...could the Moyesiah’s halo is on the rise again?

Then again, we didn’t keep a clean sheet!

The BBC say....."Everton delivered a dazzling attacking exhibition to destroy Sunderland."

Get that..."dazzling attacking exhibition"...

....I’m made up. Looking forward to a pint or two tonight!

It’s a grand old team..........COYB

Forget the stadium stuff for a day or so lads, no sarcastic remarks needed right now Hugo.

The boys played an absolute blinder today, so let’s all sit back and enjoy it for the next few days.

Everton hitting 7 goals doesn’t happen very often so as i said let’s enjoy it and no sniping at each other. The stadium stuff can wait for a few days yet.

Well done Moyesy and the boys. Take a bow, for i must doff my cap to everyone involved. Proud of you all today. That’s more like it. I can honestly say that we’re now starting to go in the right direction.

Brilliant!

When was the last time we scored 7? I?ve got a feeling it was against Southampton way back in 1996 but have no idea to be honest!!!

WHAT a day indeed......and when I look at what that squad has cost to put together and across the city we have a certain individual looking for yet more millions to add to the obscene amounts he has already spent it makes me laugh. He should be bloody well ashamed of himself if he can?t build a Premier League winning side with that sort of spending....... and hopefully he won?t!! COYB!

Dutch, do you still think Yakubu offers nothing except goals? Because if you do you need your head sorting (no offense mate).

He was quality today and some of his passing, hold up play and vision was brilliant. Pienaar also deserves another mention. Started quietly but grew in confidence as the game went on. Sign him up Moyes!!!!!!

Valente who has also had critics showed what an able deputy he is. His performances against the likes of Nuremberg, Chelsea and Sunderland have proved this. Baines should be number 1 but I think we should keep hold of Nuno as he’s still a good player.

All in all the team played excellently. No one had a bad game and every time we where in the last third we looked dangerous. The only thing that needs improving is our ball retention but it is improving and will come with time. I love the way we are attacking in waves with the likes of Pienaar, Osman, Cahill and Arteta interchanging. Fantastic.

Connor Rohrer, when/if Yakubu hits that 20 goals per season mark and then repeats it the following season, then I will admit he was worth the £11 million.

As I said when we signed him, with Yakubu sometimes you get Thierry Henry (today) and sometimes you get Lenny Henry (remember how dire he was against Metalist [H] and Liverpool?)

I would love nothing more then to be proved wrong concerning Yakubu but its going to take good performances and goals over a couple of seasons not a couple of goals in a 7-1 win.

I blame the missus......we’re off out early tonight so clever old me left on 85ish minutes to beat the traffic and managed to miss the 6th and 7th. Ah well, I’m just happy as fook to have watched an everton team demolish an admittedly poor sunderland side. All the plaudits will go to the attacking players but Lee Carlsey was brilliant in nipping their attacks in the bud. Let’s give Moyes credit for his attacking subs instead of protecting our lead. I’m a happy blue tonight

£11mil for a striker to consistently score 20+ in the Premier League would be an unbelievable bargain. And Yakubu is one!
Connor Rohrer
28   Posted 24/11/2007 at 18:40:54

Dutch, he wasn’t dire in the Derby at all. It was actually probably one of his better games. No he didn’t get many chances but who is going to with Jagielka and Neville as your central midfield. He was bad against Metalist I’ll agree with you on that but every player has bad games and again the creativity wasn’t there. In the first leg he was playing as the left side of a three man strike force which isn’t his game and in the second leg the whole team couldn’t keep hold of the ball.

Anyway Dutch you seem to believe he is just a goalscorer which is far from the truth. Look at his all round game as it is very good. Every player needs time yet because Yakubu cost 11.25 million he should just fit in straight away which frankly is not the case. People saying get rid of him in January really need to take a look at themselves because its disgraceful. 6 goals in 12 games is a good record and long may it continue.

Like I said 15-20 goals per season, every season, then I’ll admit I was wrong and Moyes was right to spend all that money on him.

I missed the game, well done guys! I hear Yak played a great game, true? How was Pienaar performance? And Cahill?
James Elworthy
37   Posted 24/11/2007 at 20:17:46

The Yak was superb today as was the rest of the team, Osman & Pienaar were buzzing, Arteta in the first half was magic, fine game by Valente, Cahill & Carsley again played well.
Just like to see a tighter defence still the odd lapse with the goal they scored and the missed sitter by Chopra.

7 - 1 cracking game so had to be game of the day on SS1...But no of course it was always going to be Bolton 1 Man U 0...Not sure why they bother calling it game of the day

40   Posted 24/11/2007 at 20:28:54

Howard had very little to do and was involved in two assists for goals, When Sunderland scored he made a double save but the third attempt went in, that gave Sunderland some heart and for the first 10 minutes of the second half they had the better of the exchanges when Cahill scored though any hope they had of coming back was gone, though they did miss a sitter at 4-1. The last 20 minutes could of seen us score 10 never mind 7.

Sometimes the most telling comments are the shortest. Walking back to the car my mate said to me...’ We’re no longer part of the dross’. I replied, ’Yeah, now we really have moved on. We’re going somewhere’. Then I had a smoke. Drove home with a big smile on my gob and wondered whether we had finally broken out of the straitjacket. I have a feeling we have. It will not all be rosy from here on in, there will be disappointments, but I am now sure the players will believe much more in themselves and all kinds of goodies can flow from that!

10 for first half Dave in the second half he gave the ball away 4 times and his dead ball kicks are definitely not a 10

Arteta is a marvellous player with the ball at his feet, I would like to see an improvement in his free kicks & corners, or perhaps him not taking so many.
What I do want to see is Arteta performing like this against the so called big four as we havent seen the best of him in these games.

I thought Osman showed tremendous ball skills today and doesn’t get the credit he sometimes deserves.

Just been watching that lovely 7th goal again and I was reminded of somthing I thought the first time I saw Osman play. When he’s in full flow, like for the 7th, he does remind me of Trevor Steven (if only in the way he moves). Just watch today’s 7th and the 3rd vs. Bayern and you’ll see what I mean.
