Champions League = Uefa Failure

Comments (14)

Sad bit of statistic checking, but remember when we had that disaster a couple of years ago going out of the Champions League and Uefa Cup? Well, I just checked on this year's 16 teams who lost their Champions League Third Round qualifiers:

6 Lost in the Uefa Qualifiers
6 more have gone out of the group stages

and of the 4 that went through, none won the group.

So it does seem it is not unusual to be psychologically affected by missing out on the CL.

The other bit of news is that for next season's UEFA cup, our 5 wins and a draw this year will improve our ranking so that we will be up around 20th compared to 34 this year. Of course winning it will make us even higher...

...And AZ Alkmaar had never been beaten in Europe at home. We’re not going to have a record breaking year without breaking a few.

what does it matter what happened to us two years back, we’re a diferent side now. balls to the CL.. that lot can throw stupid money at trophys if they want, im more than happy to compete for the uefa cup with other proper clubs. i genuinely think we can win this thing. like Joe^ says AZ had never been beat at home... we took down the best team in russia. europe is taking notice. also bring on the chelski, cant wait for wembley. Phil, hate to break your mood, but would we crash out in the next round, some teams will gain enough points to leapfrog us once again. Nonetheless already a good year! COYB!

Never mind the Cl; we aren’t in that are we?

Let see how far we can get against better teams now that the majority of the shite has been eliminated eh?

Any bets we get Aberdeen in the next round, would be a good draw in my opinion.

To be honest and it goes for the league and any cup competitions you should fear no one and take the game to them, if you go into a game thinking you will lose good chance is you will, if you wat to win you have to be aware at some point you will meet strong teams be it in the league or cup.

Look at how Seville have done in the UEFA Cup the last two years! Its a massive stepping stone and learning curve. Hopefully in a couple of years we will be there! It takes time!COYB

For the anoraks out there, here is the updated UEFA rankings - we are up to 66th.
The most important thing about a good UEFA cup run is to get us well into the top 50 so that when (not if) we next get a Champions league spot, we get an easy qualifying draw.

I think the draw has fell kindly on us for the next two rounds, if you cannot beat Fiorentina, Rosenborg and Bergen you really shouldnt be in the UEFA Cup anyway.
We have already beaten technically better sides in Alkmaar and Zenit than those 3.

If AZ are technically better than Fiorentina, then I’m a Dutchman!
