Who would Kendall pick?

Just read an article by Brian Viner in this month's Evertonian. And in it he mentions a few current players who might have been picked by Kendall before the likes of Steven, Sheedy and Mountfield. The first players who come to my mind is Tim Cahill & Lescott. In the article Viner quotes Robbie Earle in saying that "Tim Cahill is no less a force in midfield than Gerrard, Lampard and Paul Scholes, vastly more feted players because of the teams they play for"

Being old enough to remember the glory days and lucky enough to be a season ticket holder in the 80s, the thing is Kendall put a team together that turned average players into great players, the balance and shape of the side was perfect, remember players like paul power comming in and doing superb. But back to the question I think Tim Cahill would have been a kendall player, so to Yobo and Lescott, I couldnt see the our current strikers removing Sharp, Gray or Heath. The thing is if you asked this question a few years ago there was no comparison, shows you how much we have improved.

I also think Reid would do well to keep his place with Neville breathing down his neck

Tony - I agree with you saying that the balance of the great 80’s teams made decent players play well. But I think that applies to successful clubs all the time. Most of our first string time-travelled back to 1985 would have done very well in that team.
I wonder what Howard would have made of Mikel Arteta? As they all used to say when he was in Scotland, ’a bit lightweight’. I think its not just Moyes’s team, but what now goes on in the club which makes good players into potentially great players.

Is that the way you remember it Tony?
Southall, Ratcliffe. Reid, Sheedy, Stevens, Gray, Heath & Sharp etc, etc,- average players? I just remember HK putting together the best band of talented players ever to have pulled on an Everton shirt.
Funny the tricks memory plays on you!

Brendin I was relating to some of the squad players brought in to cover Power, Harper, Wikinson & Richardson, to me they were average players but played well in a succesful team thats the point I was making. I would dispute Ratcliffe being a great player, fast but couldnt pass wind mate

Take your point Tony. But are you sure about Ratcliffe? I remember him as an awesome central defender. Maybe my memory IS playing tricks on me!
