Oldham Memories...

Re the epic Everton - Oldham Cup ties back in 1990, I was playing footy on the local park with the radio on, supremely confident that we'd win the replay... went home rather deflated as had to listen to the penalty go in and that was that...

The referee was Tony Ward. A name remembered by many after all these years for his performance in the first two ties despite, to the best of my knowledge, never refereeing any other Everton matches. A complete twat.

Talking of memories... Just reading the Wiki entry for Dixie Dean. Commenting on the tough tackles of the day aimed at the legend, one resulted in him losing a testicle. That tackle must have been quite hairy... oooh missus!

I've never heared this 'fact' before but then war time proaganda of Hitler may have overshadowed Dixie's status in this department. Hitler's other was apparently kept in the Albert Hall... maybe they shared a Royal Box...

Alex, I don?t think I ?ve ever witnessed a poorer performance from a ref. I?ve saw some over the years but that Tony Ward was consistant for the 90 minutes of the first two games. Believe it or not, he was the first ref ever to send-off Norman Whiteside.

Saw some bad decisions over the years but to referee poorly for two whole games and extra time takes the buscuit.

My much earlier Oldham memories of Everton’s and my own history was in April 1954 when we clinched promotion with a 4 - 0 victory. John Willy Parker scored 2 and Davy Hickson 1, I cannot remember who scored our 4th. That day was made even more memorable by a lovely and understanding Salford lass who taught me a few things while all the ’oldies’ were getting pissed in a half way house. Sweet, sweet memorories.

I remember walking home from this game with my ears ringing, the noise level was fantastic all generated because of a terrible refereeing performance. Somethings never change ref’s against us,

FAO Dick Fearon

Do you remember much about our time in the Second Division? What was it like following Everton in those days? What was our general support like then, home and away? What were the chants from then?

Paul B,
In the 50s Football specials had slatted wooden seats no corridors or toilets. An open window offered some relief.
Other than Pompey’s ’Chimes’ I do not recall mass vocals .
In the 60s we hung Kopites on the Royal Blue Mersey,West Ham had its ’Bubbles’ and other clubs joined the singing bandwaggon. I had two groups of mates, one from my neighbourhood the other group I met in the boys pen.
freindships born in tough times that lasted a life time.
After 30 years I went home for a holiday and found the exciting magical atmosphere at Goodison on match days was almost as if I had never left.
I can still name each player that won promotion all those years ago.
I worshipped Davy Hickson and was pictured in the Echo holding aloft a ’If Davy Goes I Go’ sign. Thankfully we are both grimly clinging to the branch and our one true club. Love ya Dave.

My experience of Oldham in the 90?s was a game in which Whiteside kicked the shit out of milligan on the touchline and got sent off, harvey then went out and bought milligan, who as far as i can remember was pretty poor for us. Also our very own reject "Neil Adams " smashng in corners agaist our aging and untalanted back 4 ( watson the exception ). I just hope Moyes does not do a Harvey and buy an Oldham player we kick the shit out of due to pity!

I recall that Everton - Oldham game in 1990. I was a student @ Plymouth then (ironically we have a player on loan to them and are buying one from them as I type !). Anyway. It was a cold night if I recall and saw the goals on TV at nighttime.
I felt sick. I hate it when Everton go out to a side in the FA cup as they have a good pedigree that competition - well they used to from 1980 to 1995. Plastic pitch couldn?t have helped.

A friend down the corridor supported Aston VIlla who were duelling it out with Pool that year for Div 1 Champion spot. Oldham beat villa in the next round 3-0. As the BBC news artical says Oldham were in for 3 cups that year.

Oldham were a great cup team then and had just beaten West Ham 6-0 in the League Cup in midweek. It was torrential rain as we stood on the freezing, open terrace. We cruised into a 2 goal lead and that’s when the officials took over. Southall made a full length diving stop and with the ball in his hands, Roger Palmer tripped over his legs and Ward gave them a ridiculous penelty. We then had a goal disallowed for no good reason and we were pegged back to 2-2.

I cannot remember too much about the replay apart from Ian Marshall putting them ahead, and Sheedy grabbing a draw with a penalty. Whiteside was sent off for foulin Milligan, though Milligan was getting to his feet and decided to go down again, seemingly on the instruction of Royle, before the card was shown. I recall about 4 of our players getting booked for dissent, so bizarre was the refereeing performance. The crowd was probably no more than 30,000, but Ward was responsible for one of the most hostile atmospheres I’ve heard at Goodison.

Back to Oldham for the second replay on the afternoon of the next round. Cottee gave us an early lead before Neil McDonald took over. A short back-pass lead to Oldham getting level before he gave away a penalty with a trip about afoot insode the box. We went out with a whimper after seemingly cruising through in the first match.

We drew Oldham in the league cup around then too. They got a free-kick 30 yards from goal and I remember wondering who this short unknon full back thought he was lining up to have a shot at goal. It was Dennis Irwin and he found th corner of the net in front of the Street End, though we won this game with a late Neal Adams header!

My one abiding memory of Oldham is why did Mike Milligan play so well that one game against us. We bought him on that performance, the rest is history. How does it go "one swallow doth not make a summer".

Just another point Arteta ban could be a godsend, nice rest straight into the City game which in my opinion will put us in 4th spot as those whose name should never be mentioned in the same sentence as Arteta (disrepectful) will lose their next game. Happy days

The Daily Post also published a "Where are they now?" article on the last time we played Oldham in the cup in 1990.

Where are they now?. The first game at Oldham and we ended up in a club by the Chaddy’ End of the ground. The pre-match fun was a dog show. Parts of the club were sectioned out for various dog clubs. About ten lads walked in and sat down at one table. A waitress told them that the tables were for certain dog clubs. One bod told her that they were with a certain club. The waitress then took a full order from the menu for these ’dog lovers’. My cousin pointed this out to me and said they were ’up to something’. We watched as they scoffed and drank everything that was put before them. When the waitress asked if they needed anything else, one lad asked for the bill. As she went off to add up their feast, all the lads made a quiet dash for the door and were gone into the matchday crowd. The waitress came back to an empty table. What a shocked look she had. You shouldn’t laugh, but at the same time, you shouldn’t be so stupid.

After a draw at Goodison in the 1st replay, a second replay went back to Boundary Park. Yes, you guessed it. No Everton fans were allowed in that club. It was no big deal as a few yards down the road, a British Legion opened up for us.

I’m not gloryfying their un-paid feast but it was funny-ish and it is one of those away day stories.
