Transfer Window (Non)Sense & Sensibility

Comments (41)

So its January and everyone wants to know who we're going to buy and who we're (more likely) not going to buy.

The merry-go-round begins here and as usual its going to be heresay abounding with big talk of Manny in Pizza Hut and Ronaldinho hanging out in Abra-Kebab-ra, with the ultimate prize of a 17-year-old from the West Country the most we can hope for (really?!)

So, rather than trawl through our vacant memory banks and hope for some light at the end of an all-too-distant tunnel, I happily stumbled across this piece on Football 365 which makes for interesting reading; it also puts to bed a lot of the arguments about whether the January transfer window is a Godsend... or a bit of a pain in the bum.

Is Fernandes signing? I was in a taxi in London this morning at 7am and the driver put Talksport Radio on and I just caught the end of Everton trying to negogiate a loan deal for the unsettled Valancia star. I am supposed to be in a seminar but have spent the last half hour going through all the Sports websites, but not a mention, anyone else hear this broadcast? If its true I just hope we don't spend the next month on this one, only for it to fall through.

Read in The Mirror today that Moyesy is in for a Manny return. I know it's been discussed in the mailbag, but he is quality and if a Pienaar type deal is possible, a player of his class in the middle of the park would push us on surely ? especially if Davey does a Yak on him and gets him firing on all cylinders!!

I?ve just found this article on the internet relating to Fernandes:

http://goal.com/en-us/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=534989

Looks like he spent the night in the slammer after being arrested for some late night partying, no mention of it being in a McDonald?s though. Apparently, Koeman wants him out and has asked the club to find him a new team but I?m not too sure if this type of story increases or decreases the likelihood of Moyes giving him a second chance.

Well the OS has decided to pour cold water on Fernandes rumours.

Or will such an article just add more fuel to the fire in these crazy times?

What I don’t understand is why all this talk of just a loan deal if it is true that he’s coming back. We and Moyes obviously know he’s ace from the loan deal last season and is exactly the sort of player we need. I know we haven’t got a pot to piss in but my concern is that we get him, he does brilliantly again and we’re effectively putting him in the shop window for X,Y,Z to approach him or MSI and say, right how much do you want, we want him and effectively get gazzumped again. Once bitten, twice shy and all that...

Personally think the Jan window is a god send for the richer teams.
They are able to buy their way out of trouble if it comes to it, due to injuries etc. And in the process usually rape the less affluent clubs of their better talent.
The whole system is flawed to my mind, buy what you need in the summer and stick with it or leave the window open all season.

There’s no point in gossiping about it until it actually happens. We all remember what happened last time. Theres not point in thinking about it unitl hes signed the dotted line. And that goes for any other signing.

That wont stop me reading every rumour thread until the end of the transfer window.. I think Im addcited.

Manuel Fernandes spent Wednesday night in prison for the alleged stealing of a watch according to papers here in Portugal and Spain. I doubt he will be coming back to Everton after this type of behavior but perhaps the RS can give him a season ticket for the Kop....?

Personally for me, all this transfer talk is boring. Time to move on. Haven’t we learned that rumours are always wide of the mark?

Manny Fernandes spent last night in jail after getting caught in a pub-fight. Apparantely someone accused him of stealing his watch and Manny punched this guy in the face straigth away.

And this while Valencia play their derby against Levante on Sunday. Do we want such a player back? Or is this a tabloid story blown out of proportions?

Erik, didnt one of Evertons biggest heroes get sent to prison for butting someone on the pitch shortly after he arrived at Goodison? Fernandes got into a bit of a scrap by the sounds of it like most young lads have been at some point!

Moyes? comments were intended to put the rumour to bed. Reading between the lines, however, he only showed that he is really interested in Manny. He could have denounced Manny for last years snub, but he chose the ?bemused? route. Expect movement on this one!

Confirmed the cession Manuel Fernandes to the Everton. Jorge Mendes, agent of the midfield player of the Valencia Manuel Fernandes, today confirmed the cession to the English Everton of the Portuguese player, who this dawn was stopped after seeing itself surrounded in an incident in the premises of leisure of the Valencian capital.

(From one of those free online translators)

Cession actually means to give up one?s rights to something (property, for example).

It says this i think?

Confirmed the cession Manuel Fernandes to the Everton Jorge Mendes, agent of the midfield player of the Valencia Manuel Fernandes, today confirmed the cession to the English Everton of the Portuguese player, who this dawn was stopped after seeing itself surrounded in an incident in the premises of leisure of the Valencian capital. The Portuguese representative left the offices of the club of Mestalla around the 16,20 hours after maintaining a meeting with Miguel Angel Ruiz, sport director of the Valencia, and, although he announced the exit of the Portuguese, sent to the journalists to the official version of the Valencia. Manuel Fernandes, that arrived this season at the Valencia coming from the Benfica, already played of January June of the season last in the Everton in yielded quality of and after a period of three months to loan in the Portsmouth. The international Portuguese, who did not enter the plans of the technician of the Valencia, Ronald Koeman, remained outside the call like first measurement of the Dutch trainer when knowing today that he had spent the night in the police station. The player was itself involved this dawn in an argument next to his teammate and compatriot Miguel Brito and, although this one last one was not prisoner, yes was it its brother, who spent the night in the jail with Fernandes. Both have been set free minutes before the 14,00 hours and this late they will be put under in a fast opinion in the court of Instruction I number 9 of Valencia

Moyes has done nothing of the sort. He says the same thing before every transfer that takes place. If he wanted to rubbish the report he would have said Fernandes will not be coming back to Everton. I have no desire to bring him in and am not going to do so. But he jsut said he knew nothing of the rumors. This one seems to be gathering pace and could well come off. It would be great if it does, we could use him.

Nice article... "It?s not that Saha is rubbish, he just happens to be made of balsa wood"!

Personally I wouldn't like to see the return of Manny, not because of his nightclub shenanigans but because of the obvious snub in the summer.

Far more interested in Joe Ledley if there?s any truth in the rumours, but not really expecting anything in this window.

Can anyone here read Italian? I tried to translate this on babel fish, but it made a hash of the whole thing. It certainly appears as though someone from Manuel’s group is talking about our Club at the very least? "Ufficiale"?

Getting interesting to say the least

The deal has been reported in El Mundo Deportivo (the daily Barcelona sports paper) and on teletext on Spanish TV (which is where I first saw, back in August and to my horror, that Manny was leaving us for Valencia)... by the way, ’cesión’ means ’loan’

reuters is a pretty reputable source, but a cause for caution is that nobody has any quotes from his agent, it’s the same thing saying he told reporters his, but no solid quotes provided. Still, there seems to be something to this.

Scratch that, Setanta sports do have a quote from his agent.
After David Moyes earlier dismissed a return for Fernandes the 21-year-old?s agent, Jorge Mendes, has told setantasports.com that his client is now preparing to return to the North West of England subject to the successful completion of negotiations.

"The agreement for the loan is complete but we wait for official confirmation from Valencia,? Mendes revealed.

Mendes told setantasports.com that he had met with Los Che sporting director Miguel Angel Ruiz to thrash out a deal which will see Fernandes join The Toffees until the end of the season.

Setanta also say he is undergoing a medical, full article:

"Manuel Fernandes? agent has revealed to setantasports.com that the Valencia midfielder is undergoing a medical with a view to completing a move to Everton.

The Portuguese winger spent a spell on loan at Goodison Park last season and irked Toffees officials by opting to move to the Mestalla after verbally agreeing to join the Merseyside club.

Having paid a fee of around ?18 million (£13.5m) for Fernandes only last summer, Valencia coach Ronald Koeman is believed to have sanctioned a move after failing to find a place in his plans for the player.

What you read on a newspaper or sports website is not to be trusted - however, Reuters clearly is to be trusted so I would believe nothing bar this article for now. Doesn’t tell you much, but I’d say this is the truth as far as is possible at this stage.

Note: This only hit Reuters an hour ago.
