What's happening against Oldham?
Comments (63)
I am following the Oldham game on the net and we have less shots on goal... more fouls... less possession and to add insult to injury, Oldham score a cracker just before half time. I am really worried that this maybe a very tough second half for us.
I can't even start to think of us losing this game, hope we can pull our socks up for the 2nd half and get a win, somehow, don't care how.

We need to score, don't fancy a replay at their place.

Anyone reckon we need Fernandes?!?
Baines off
Lescott on
WHY?!
6 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:02:39
Why not bring Anderson Silva on instead!

Can't be arsed with being scalped. 9 mins left.

Would be happy to have Gosling as back up to Neville.
We need Cahill and Fernandes in for the Semi Final.
22 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:25:11
He rests Cahill, Yobo, Yak, Lescott etc.
Oh Well, could be a great tactic by Moyes if we can beat Chelsea, but it looks as if our results are yo-yo?ing again!
23 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:26:19
Cant believe they couldnt even get shots on target...bloody shambles...
24 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:27:55
25 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:24:04
Yes... the team sent out today was enough to beat them.
Yes... it is a disappointment and not in keeping with the rest of our season.
But give some credit to Oldham. Listening on the audio broadcast, they defended well, countered well and did so playing decent football.
I’m less than happy with the loss, but let’s show SOME dignity in defeat and say "well played Oldham". It sounds as if they thoroughly deserved it.

30 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:34:43
We tend to forget that coz we think the world of our players.
Nothing less than a win against Chelksi in the CC semi..and Moyes better bring in some midfield cover for Arteta and Cahill otherwise things may start to snowball out of control!

Sorry just hurting, deeply disappointing result. A team selection that asks the question if Moyes is even interested in the FA Cup?
With the extended Uefa and League Cup campaigns, maybe Moyes wasn?t so bothered about the FA Cup?

If we beat Chelsea or get a draw then I?ll be happy being a blue... haha!

38 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:35:08
Playing extra strikers without someone to give them the ball will never work - the man hasn’t a clue. We still haven’t beaten anybody half decent all season and now we can’t even score against rubbish. He got away with it against Metallist and Luton but basically it’s clear he doesn’t know how to win in a knockout competition.
39 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:39:46
It was a nailed on certainty that Moyes would send out pretty much the eleven he started with today. And perfectly legitimate it was too, given the opposition and the upcoming fixture list.
Unfortunately, the players did not perform to the standard that they are more than capable of - and from what I heard on the audio broadcast, Oldham thoroughly deserved the win.
The defeat is hard to take, but rather than berate Moyes for his selection, I am disappointed that possibly some players thought they would be on easy street today and just had to turn up to win. I didn’t expect that sort of attitude from us, given the way the club is set up these days.
See the defeat as another lesson in the football education of some of our players...

We have only about 16 players who you can count on :-
Howard,Hibbert, Neville,Yobo,Lescott,Stubbs,Jags,Baines, Valente,Pinnear,Arteta, Osman,Cahill,Carsley,Johnson,Yakubu.
Still learning - Vaughan, Anichebe.
To loose 4 or 5 due to injuries, suspensions,ANC etc and you effectively cannot compete at the Top level , loose 9 like we did today (by choice for some) and you cant be trusted to compete against teams who will fight for everything.
Anyway main point after rabbitting - get rid of McFadden and Gravesen to Celtic, Wessels back to Germay and get another two midfield players in asap.

I think Everton will like the weekend off when it comes to the 4th, 5th, and 6th round. Maybe the players need it.
We failed miserably today, but, we need to move on and support the Blues on Tuesday. This was Moyes? first tactical mistake since Tottenham at home at last season. Let?s get behind the team, and Moyes, and we will be off to Wembley in 1 months time. COYB!

46 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:50:08
47 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:50:11
Bigger picture however is that frankly we needed a strong FA Cup run as much as Tommy G needs a hairdryer. We don’t have the resources to cope with competing on four different fronts. In an ideal world, we could have gone out to another Prem team away from home, but alas we haven’t and now the focus must be on Tuesday night.
I know the old ’blessing in disguise’ is an overused cliche for these occasions, but is it really worth derailing our UEFA Cup and Carling Cup runs (not to mention league) for the sake of turning out for the FA Cup as well? Really?
48 Posted 05/01/2008 at 18:03:28
However, one bad result will not sour what otherwise has been a decent season.
49 Posted 05/01/2008 at 18:01:53
50 Posted 05/01/2008 at 17:51:48
The only round of the UEFA that was a knockout round (Metallist) was an embarrassment for exactly the reason that Moyes is fairly clueless when it comes to tactics. We were very close to going out against Luton in the Carling Cup and so far this season haven?t beaten any team in the top half of the Premier League at the time we played them. Unfortunately scoring a few goals against Sunderland seems to have turned everybody?s heads. Three months ago nobody on this site had a good word to say about Moyes. Now apparently, if you still think he has something to prove, you?re ?idiotic?. I prefer to wait unless we have won something before going overboard.
51 Posted 05/01/2008 at 18:00:42
It’s a terrible, terrible result for us and maybe Moyes did screw up in his team selection........but everything upto now (at least since this run started) has been close to Moyes is God’s right hand man...best squad ever, goals galore, progressing in two cup competitions etc., etc.....
we lost today simply because this is the FA Cup and shit like this happens...it is not the end of the world.....it doesn’t all of a sudden make us a shit team, it’s just one bad result against a team that gave 110%...they had nothing to lose, they have an excellent away record, they are in form (away at least) and even if they had injuries, well, so did we.....it’s basically a level playing field and spirit and luck got them through....we all know who the better team is...no question.
The silver lining of this result is that we don’t have even more games to play and we can concentrate on The League Cup and The UEFA Cup (and The Top SIx in the Prem).....plus based on this result we "should" have more impetus going into the Chelsea game.....I’m sure the lads will want to do an Oldham over Chelsea!
I would add that I’m as pissed as anybody over this result (I listened to it on the radio) but we move on. We have to. And we will.
COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
52 Posted 05/01/2008 at 18:07:49
We sacrificed this game and it’s simply not good enough to blame the players or to credit Oldham for a plucky performance. It’s down to Moyes to make sure we win games like this (please read his pre-match comments re Shrewsbury) and if he didn’t really care too much then that message definitely got down to the players, and I for one think that is an utter disgrace.
53 Posted 05/01/2008 at 18:05:47
1. The players will be even more demoralised than us by this result.
2. Knowing the situation with Osman and Arteta and ANC looming why the fuck didnt we have sombody other tha a 16-yr-old for the fiuture lined up as soon as the transfer window opened?
54 Posted 05/01/2008 at 18:10:05
Lee and Lee up there, you wrote the words right off my fingertips!
55 Posted 05/01/2008 at 18:28:00
They however failed miserably, due to a wrong attitude to this game.
Hibbert, Vaughan, McFadden and Gravesen certainly did themselves no favours regarding a place in any starting lineup again.
56 Posted 05/01/2008 at 18:27:04
Don?t get me wrong but Arsenal put their reserves out against us and many other teams (ie, Liverpool) in the Carling Cup they spanked our arses. We?ve just got to admit that some players aren't good enough to play for Oldham never mind Everton. I can?t argue the fact that Moyes has done well this year but I can argue the fact that team selection is shit.
Also when he decides that neville is a midfielder (my arse... and club captain?) ? shite! Plus bringing subs on in the 90th minute? What's that shit about? The man's a muppet but at least Preston are doing well since Irvine left... lol!
And all this shit about Everton doing well since Cahill come back is all my arse... we started to win when he fucked Neville out of midfield and brought Carsley back into the team. Cahill is a great goalscorer but can?t tackle or pass a ball for shit. Playing 5 men in midfield and 1 striker at home is a fucking joke.

58 Posted 05/01/2008 at 20:11:20
"Moyes has not got a clue..."
Are you having a laugh? The man has transformed this club over the last 5 and a half years. I trust you are enjoying our European adventure this season? Make no mistake you would not be enjoying it if it were not for the managerial skills of David Moyes.
If David Moyes did ever fuck off then we would be fucked..
59 Posted 05/01/2008 at 20:09:10
African Cup of Nations, Injuries, suspensions etc mean our squad is going to be stretched as far as it can be over the next few months.
The last thing we need is a pointless replay or a cup run that drains the squad so much we haven’t got a chance of winning anything and drop in the league.
COYB!!!
60 Posted 05/01/2008 at 20:17:47
Why would you hate the man. One thing about him, he’s not a flash mercenary, he is certainly in my book giving it his absolute best, so hatred is a bit much.
He picked a mainly second string side in view of the big match coming up on Tuesday, you can’t blame him for that. He’s missing Cahill, Arteta and Osman amongst others, you can’t blame him for that.
Oldham caught us cold on half time, but if early chances from Vaughan and McFadden had been converted, we’d have strolled though, no probs.
We got caught, we’re out, credit to Oldham, it’s their day.
Moyes got some things wrong today and we are all sick as parrots but we’ll get over it. He’s human, and you can be sure he’ll learn from this as he has done before. If this was the only thing we were playing for, it’d be a whole lot worse.
If I was Moyes reading some of this reaction, I’d wonder why I bother.
Get behind the lads on Tuesday, COYB.
61 Posted 05/01/2008 at 21:34:19
Terry and Trev, what are you on about?
Moyes to fuck off? And who do you think we would get? A Newcastle cast off? Some Spanish mercenary? Howard K for another relegation scrap? Wake up! The fact that Arsenal and United have had success and managerial stability is no coincidence. The fact that teams like Newcastle, Spurs, Villa (and to a large extent Red Shite) have hugely underachieved and have managerial instability along with boardroom handbags is no coincidence.
Be proud that we have stuck with our manager. Be proud that we have a core of 5 or 6 English players. Can many Prem teams boast that?
Put the Oldham fuck up aside. It’s a good time to be an Evertonian.

The FA Cup is a great competition!
No Howard, Neville, Cahill, Yakubu, Lescott
I understand us resting players with the Chelsea game coming up, but surely Stubbs is not ready to come back for a start and I am never happy to see Hibbert playing!
