Does He Care?

First of all, well done Oldham! It just goes to prove that pride and passion will always count in a competition like the FA Cup.

At the start of each season, the two domestic cup competitions are realistically our only chance of winning silverware. Added to this, if you win either competition having played say six games (barring replays) you qualify for the Uefa Cup, as against playing 38 games through the Premier League.

Our abysmal cup record over the last 5 seasons under David Moyes (excepting this season's League Cup run) leaves a lot to be desired. I cannot fathom his logic in not concentrating on the cup competitions given the exposure and lift it would give to us success-starved supporters. While I was not at yesterday?s game, I kept in touch via the net. When I saw Moyes?s team selection, I had a terrible feeling that we were in trouble. Why put out a team with a large number of players lacking match practice in vital positions against a team who had won 7 games away from home this season?

The manager probably feels that after a good league run that teams like Oldham will roll over. David, show some respect to other teams, our club and our supporters. We want to win the Cups.

I hardly think that a starting 11 consisting of Wessels, Hibbert, Jags, Stubbs, Baines, Gravesen, Pienaar, Carsley, McFadden, Johnson & Vaughan showed a lack of respect either to Oldham or the FA cup itself, its just on the day the team didnt perform its best and Oldham got that little bit of luck! On another day that game would have been a very comfortable 3-0 or so to Everton but its time to put that game behind us and focus on Chelsea! COYB!!

Have to agree with you there Dan. Just one of those things

I agree; isn't this what the FA Cup is really all about? I watched Luton and Stoke today and enjoyed it, cheering on the minnows...

I am as gutted at exiting the FA cup as the next person. Having sat through the abysmal performance against Oldham, one thing kept coming into my head.
No matter how many players we had injured or that Moyes decided to rest, the team put out were experienced players, many of them internationals. They should have been more than capable of producing a performance and getting a result against Oldham. But on the day they didn?t for whatever reason ? one of those things that make being a football fan totally frustrating sometimes. This is the FA Cup, we all know that shocks happen, they do so every year.

As mentioned above, we all watch with enjoyment as the minnows battle against the bigger teams. The form book goes out the window. Maybe it goes to show how far we have progressed that people are so shocked at the result. But people need to look at the bigger picture and put the hurt and frustration at losing a game, be it FA Cup or League game, behind us and look the next game. If Moyes had all his players fit and selected our best team against Oldham and say for example Cahill or Lescott or Howard had picked up an injury, the same people that are going mad now would be going mad at Moyes for risking them when we have such important games coming up!!

Sorry, I know that is a long rant but it has been eating away at me listening to people going on about Moyes?s lack of respect for the club, fans etc It?s like they have forgotten everything we have achieved and let one game rule their heads! Let's not let ourselves sound like the them over the park with constant moaning, berating and overreacting.

COYB

It would have been nice to win yesterday (understatement of the year probably) but to imply that we concentrate solely on the Cups in order to win silverware / achieve success is a bit silly........it might take less games overall to win any cup as opposed to the Prem (not that we would come close to coming top of the Prem of course) BUT it only takes one game to be out of a Cup competition (or a combination of two-legged games) but one can afford a bad spell or to lose games in the Prem...not so any cup competition.
Regardless of what Moyes did or didn’t do yesterday (I’d blame the players before I blamed Moyes) I think what EFC need is to stay in Europe each year above all else.......so in my mind we need to finish at least in the top six and IF we win a cup in addition to that all the better........winning a Cup would guarantee Europe the following season....coming anywhere in the top six will too....or top four the Champions League.

If we can do this then as we go along we’re generating more money, a better image, gaining experience, attracting better players etc., etc.
Of course it still sucks that we lost but in the bigger picture the world as we knew it is not over.

Interesting that so many Premier League teams as well as us have struggled against lower division opposition this week-end (including our dear neighbours who were very lucky to survive, as were Newcastle today, and even Arsenal and Chelsea hardly covered themselves in glory). Being Everton, we distinguished ourselves by being the most spectacular casualty, but have been in pretty good company.

I think that this is not all an accident. My hunch is that for most managers and clubs performing well in the Premier League (and secondarily in Europe for those in it) is now by far the most important thing. That is where the money is. Hence the under-strength teams and perhaps a lack of commitment.

Even speaking for myself, I would definitely trade a loss against Oldham for a home win and an away draw against our key rivals Man City. But I may be in the minority!

There you go Declan... Everybody (so far) is opposed to your point of view... including me...

Please RELOOK at the line-up we had against Oldham... and tell me those players are not capable of winning?

WTF! Stop calling for heads just cause we got kicked out of the FA cup... at least it wasn?t a 1-4 humiliation like what Blackburn had...

Geez! Grow up.

One more comment......
Blaming Moyes is useless....I doubt for one minute that he wanted to lose yesterday, I doubt for one minute that he thought the team he put out couldn’t do the job........and I doubt for one minute that he put less emphasis on this competition, or was focused on the upcoming Chelsea game.....as he will tell you in nearly every interview "it’s the next game that counts" (or words to that effect).......
As one can see from other results, shit like this happens, I know that doesn’t make it any easier (unlike some I don’t regard losing to Oldham as humiliation, get a grip!) ...it’s the FA Cup and it happens.

I guarantee this result will be forgotten if we beat Chelsea and get to the final.....AND / OR the UEFA Cup final....still on for the double!!

I lied, one more comment..........I agree with Neil above...if we do the double over Man City and with the way The Red Shite are throwing points away we have every chance of finishing in the top four.......that and a cup win........would make for a truly fantastic season.

Although Neil did say that our loss to Oldham was "most spectacular casualty", I disagree..........I think Blackburn’s was.....or even some of the tied games..........to be honest given all the details I’d rather lose to Oldham than tie to Luton......I also thought it was pretty despicable how the RS wouldn’t give their gate receipts back to Luton.....I know the creditors might have had the money first but I’m sure they could have donated their earnings (or some amount of money) directly to the Luton players who haven’t been paid in awhile.......somehow I think Everton would have done that if the circumstances were the same.
Plus, as I said yesterday, as we’re out of this one we can now concentrate on the League Cup (3 games max), the UEFA Cup (9 games max?) and the Prem.

That side that was out there yesterday was a legitimate premiership side. They lost. The other guys were playing for their paychecks. They won. I think getting paid if you win has some attraction to it!!

With the exception of Oldham yesterday, and Shresbury in Moyes first full season in charge - we’ve only been knocked out of cups by premier league opposition. More often than not one of the big 4. Otherwise Blackburn!

It’s all too easy to point out Moyes’ poor cup pedigree - but look closer at who we’ve been knocked out by and you’ll realise that they’re usually not games we’d have been expected to win.

Martin, I have heard some daft comment?s but yours takes the biscuit: "I?d rather lose to Oldham, than tie to Luton"

Okay, it seems that I have truly lost this argument and that all the contributors disagree with me!
First of all, I do not want Moyes out, I feel that while he has made mistakes like all managers we are in a far stronger position now, than anytime in the past 15 years. I thank him for that. I am just making an observation about our cup records since he took over. It reads like this (season 2006-2007) back:
FA CUP; Blackburn (h, 3 rd), Chelsea (a, 4), Man Utd (h, 5), Fulham (a, 4) and Shrewsbury (a, 3)
L Cup. Arsenal Reserves (h, 3) Middlesborough (h, 3), Arsenal Reserves (a, 4), Middlesborough (a, 3) and Chelsea (a, 3).
Everton have only beaten one Premier team in the FA Cup in that period ? Sunderland (H), the year the Cats were relegated with the lowest ever points total. We have only beaten Newcastle away (on penalties) in the League Cup.

I also agree with the view that the team that Moyes picked should have beaten Oldham, however there were too many ?dodgy? players on the team. Would Howard have conceded McDonald?s goal?

To "Brian Waring":
Well, this is the site for daft comments at times isn’t it? The reaction by some to the game on Saturday proves that without question.......we are ALL disappointed we lost but it is NOT the end of the world.
That aside...why did I say: "I?d rather lose to Oldham, than tie to Luton" ...........
Well, I hope nobody (except maybe you Brian) took me literally when I said that....of course I didn’t mean it literally.......my point is that we lost fair and square to a team that is on a fantastic away run, they had injuries, we had injuries, they were playing for their lives, we clearly were not, as quite a few posters have already said this was a strong team we put out (at least on paper) and our record in the FA Cup, aside from the odd game, is not good but mainly because of Premiership opposition......I say that because it shouldn’t be seen as a case of "Oh, no, not again" ... this is the FA Cup and as we ALL know stuff like this happens...it does NOT make it any easier but it truly does happen.......look at Birmingham, Blackburn, Bolton, Sunderland, Villa (their luck in the FA Cup being repeatedly drawn against Manyoo is another fascinating aspect of this competition)..........I’ve no doubt that Newcastle, West Ham, Spurs, Liverpool, Derby and Fulham were all very disappointed that they only drew....it’s the FA Cup, it happens, get over it!

Of course I haven’t really addressed Brian’s comment have I ?
Stressing again I didn’t mean it literally.......what I was thinking was that we went out to win, we didn’t, all the best to Oldham (they deserve it), it probably helps us in the big picture..........our squad is NOT capable of fighting in the Prem and three cup competitions.....maybe next season but not right now......I can almost feel the tension coming out of The Red Shite and especially Benitez....them tying to Luton is just as bad as us losing to Oldham in my opinion....more pressure on them the better....and if by losing to Oldham it helps us in the other stuff, I’m all for it.
I don’t care if it’s The League Cup...if we can get to Wembley I’ll be as happy as any fellow Everton fan.......not to mention the UEFA Cup...which I think we contend with our full squad (ie after the ANC) plus whatever we buy this month.....so I look to Moyes to do well in that competition too!

One final comment (I write too much don’t I?)....a lot of posters have stated how unhappy, pissed off, angry etc., etc they are over Saturday’s game (I know exactly how you feel) but let’s not forget that it is not a given that we, or any team, will win a game.........some posters have implied we may as well have got a bye against Oldham because "under normal circumstances" we’re the better team, well, yes we are the better team (no doubt about it) and we’re on a fantastic run so we expect it all the more (that’s why I think the press have stated our game as the shock result.....I still think Blackburns was worse) but you can’t expect to win every game without even touching a ball and lets do the right thing and give praise to Oldham for a fantastic effort on their part.
We now move on....to the league cup final and the UEFA Cup final..........and Europe next season!!

COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
