A Question on W R Dixie Dean

Comments (5)

Just got this off a cousin who is researching his family history: I have a "Dixie" Dean problem. I reckon he was educated at Laird Street School in Birkenhead.

Wikipedia have him as one of the most famous pupils at S.F.X in Liverpool. My Dad always told me that he went to school with Dixie, and they both left when they were 14. Dixie went as an Apprentice Boiler Maker in Birkenhead.

Any help anyone can give would be gratefully appreciated.

Ask Dave Prentice at the Echo, he is married to Dixie’s grandaughter.

He played football for Laird Street School, Moreton Bible Class, Heswell and Pensby United before joining Tranmere Rovers in November 1923.

According to The Lost Interview Dixie Uncut from a series of Liverpool Echo interviews, in his own words William Ralph went to Laird Street Council School (Birkenhead) and left when he was 14. Hope this helps. The way Wikipedia is compiled means it isn’t always accurate as anyone can post info on it.

Dixie did go to Laird Street School and left at fourteen. He then started to serve his time as an apprentice Fitter for Wirral Railway , where his father worked. He is quoted as saying " I wanted to work for the railway because I liked the Wirral Railway football ground"
