Mr Ashley, You're Missing the Point

Comments (38)

Having read Bill Kenwright's comments about his phone conversation with Mike Ashley, I feel that if the quote is accurate, it drastically misses the point.

So Newcastle would, 'never do that to Everton...', I think they would struggle to have the ability to do so even if they would like to.

Newcastle are undoubtedly a big club but I think the thing that irks supporters of other clubs, is the seemingly deluded opinion of their fans that they are the be all and end all.

Why on earth would Moyes move to a decidedly unstable club with the most fickle fans in the country, a strange 'phoney fan' for a chairman and a bunch of overpaid, over-rated players, speckled with the odd hooligan.

David Moyes has developed a young, committed and certainly extremely able squad at Everton and that has taken no shortage of effort and dedication. To exchange that for the above would be close to lunacy.

Newcastle have won virtually fuck-all in the last 50 years and look no closer to changing that in the near future.

My response to Mr Ashley's call would have been to point out this rather obvious point and ask him kindly to lower his inflated opinion of the draw of his club.

I have to agree, Richard. Moyes's recent comments acknowledging the support from the Everton Board and the benefits of stability in the managerial hotseat could have been tailor-made advice for Newcastle who, frankly, look like a mess of a football club.

Your bang on right, but I think his quote may have meant ?I wouldnt do that to a club that has a manager under contract?, thats assuming he does appoint a person unemployed. If he does appoint a manager under contract i?ll be really peeeed off with that statement he made. Were 100 times what Newcastle are. Moyes aint stupid. Hes turned a team full of a bunch of pub heads into a top 4 challenging team. Hes not stupid, and trust me, Moyes wants to do to Everton what Fergie did to Man U. Why go backwards? Moyes is a very clever person and I wouldnt want anyone other than David Moyes in charge of our club.

Newcastle United are not a big club, Richard, and they don’t have the stability to become one. They’ve been trumpeted as one by the likes of Sky News because of their high profile managers and players, but that hasn’t brought them no glories. All that has done is give the Magpies an over-sized ego that is easily pricked when they lose a succession of matches. Who, in their right mind, would want to manage that sort of club?

Moyes would have to dust off his first 5 year plan that he used and try to recreate it in 5 months at Newcastle and he wouldnt get away with some of the football Everton have played leading up to this point either as Big Sam found out to his cost!

I think the Newcastle job is summed up nicely by the term ’poisoned chalice’. Even though Joey Barton is a numbskull I think his observation regarding the febrid atmosphere at St. James’s affecting player performance is 50% right. The other 50% is down to the highly paid and underperforming players who have been plying their trade there for the last decade who have caused Geordie tempers to fray over the long term. Anyway, that is their business, lets hang on to our boss and our stability and let us see where this season and beyond takes us!

I was thinking exactly the same thing: "I would never do that to Everton!" Thanks for letting us off the hook Ashley, you tool. I really can’t stand them, with all that "everyone’s second team" garbage. They have a big fan base but they’re a one team city and before the invention of sky where were they all? 12,000 fans used to turn up at St James’ when they were languishing in what is now the championship, and that’s when it was cheap to watch your team. They only sell out their away allocation at Goodison when they’re having a good run. Good luck to whoever takes that job with those whoppers.

Can I play devils advocate for a moment?

Newcastle are a big club - 50,000 plus gates every home game say that.

St James? Park is a great ground.

Mike Ashley has an almost bottomless bank account should he choose to use it.

The manager that puts silverware on the table at Newcastle will achieve god like status overnight.

Allardyce was not Ashley?s appointment.

Ashley is a self made man he knows what it takes to build an empire.

Now I don?t think for a moment that Moyes would jump ship but...........................

He?s been at a club for 5 and a bit years that has a run down stadium that may be on the move if everyone can agree.

The average gate is 38,000 and while the fans don?t get on his back any more he is still not universally liked (look at some posts on this site today).

Purse strings are tight, there is no prospect of someone with deep pockets coming in and the chairman while he is a weathy man, has no cash reserves to speak of.

Oh and if it does all go Pete Tong he can get up to £4m compensation for not doing the business.

Hmmm!

Any Evertonian who has had the displeasure to visit this abhorrent club and the lack of control by stewards and police will be laughing, as I have done for many years
. The quicker they are back in the lower divisions the better.

All the shit about how great the fans are is pathetic. They are a bunch of poor losers, with very little in their lives other than the chance to go out and get pissed with that ridiulous kit on.

The symbol of perpetual losers.

I will never forgive the way they carried on on internet forums etc when we got into the Champions League. I thought most other fans would have been made up to see another club break into the top 4 but they had nothing but contempt for us, they were so bitter.

Thats probably becuase of all the money they have spent and managers they have gone through and they are still shit. Although I do think they are a big club (Steve A gave the details) they are not as big or as important as their fans think they are. Long may their turmoil continue!

Having been told on an earlier thread that denials are the best way to conceal your intentions (when DM does it) I think we can asume that Moyes is on his way. LOL
Incidentally I wouldn’t like to see him leave at this juncture.

I remember that Charlie, but I also remember working in Jersey in the 80s & 90s with Geordies and they never even talked about football, not until Keegan got them back in the top flight, that all this toon army shit came out, they have won fuck all so this best fans in the world comes out. I cant take 18 stone men with ale guts, and a tight barcode wrapped around them serious can you? They are deluded but also they can be nasty bastards, must be all that inter breeding what they seem to do in the North East. Do you think Moyes would go to a dying club with fans who lets be honest a bunch of pricks, turning up in their thousands wearing bar codes to welcome a fucking little injury prone weasel like owen. No hes got his eye on bigger things me think, like leading the blues out at wembley next month

LOL, Dave that made me laugh.... that is so typical of their fans thats how I think of them! One of my best m8s is a Geordie and goes the match, he keeps trying to convince me how they have turned down membership of the G14 on several occasions, the scary thing is he actually believes it! I honestly think that Moyes’ heart is at Everton and I am not even slighly worried that he would consider a move to Newcastle.

As you say Wembley is on his mind. COYB

I agree with Alan Clarke. Newcastle have become, in my opinion, the "Sky Sports Toon Army".Witness the ridiculous programme aired to celebrate the arrival of Michael Owen . Does anybody out there remember them being known as the "Toon" 20+years ago? Sure they have history but you would have to be even older than me to remember their last trophy. There’s more chance of me taking over from Big Sam than David Moyes.

What the Newcastle owner meant was that he would not speak to Moyes without asking for Kenwright?s permission first. Of course if he wanted Moyes and Kenwright wouldn?t give permission he would just informally mention it to journalists and try and tempt Moyes that way.

Mind you, I don?t see Moyes going anywhere soon.

Dave Hersham I find your comment offensive : "Must be all that inter-breeding what they seem to do in the North East."

As a non-geordie who works and lives in the North East I can say that most Toon fans have extremely high expectations and are deeply passionate about their club.

Infact, if you were to read into and know anything about Allardyce’s departure (which I have and do because I’m a sub-editor working for the Evening Chronicle up here -sister paper to the Echo) you’d realise how strong the fanbase is and what massive influence they have the club.

And as for: "Do you think Moyes would go to a dying club with fans who lets be honest are bunch of pricks."

Your xenophobia disgusts me and you re no better than all the bigots who laugh at the robbing curly perm image of scousers.

Speaking to my colleagues at work today about Moyes, I get the impression he is greatly admired, but Redknapp or a foreign manager is the favourite choice.

I’m sure that any blue fan like myself living in the North East will tell you that.

Alex since you moved up their have you lost any sense of humour you might have had. This is an unofficial web site and I remember the toon web sites when we finished fourth and they ridiculed Everton to the point of Racisim, so dont preach morals to me, I am making a general observation of your beloved adopted city and its fans, and the nasty stewards and police who treat away fans like shit. You have been caught up in all this toon army crap and most passionate fans in the world, you are as deluded as them stupid meat heads who think having a load of barcodes screaming at big sam after 12 games to fuck off back to Bolton, bigots are everywhere and I wouldn’t be suprised if your rag has got a few, most rags have and for some two bob hack to come on here preaching morals dont make me sick

17   Posted 10/01/2008 at 20:57:42

It?s not a case of losing my sense of humour, just the fact your comments are offensive to people in the North East - whether they support Sunderland Middlesbrough or Newcastle

I certainly have never felt threatened by stewards, home fans or police in the city, or been treated like shit by any of the Newcastle fans I have met, watched football with or work with.

And if you rise to, or are influenced by, something you?ve seen on a Newcastle website a few years ago, then you're obviously no bettter than them.

Discuss how Moyes may or may not fit into the set up at Newcastle and whether you think it is or isn?t going to happen.

And yes there are bigots everywhere.... you?ve certainly confirmed that fact Dave.

So the Toon army are nice people... HA! I was up there last October and started talking to the locals while having a liquid lunch and all the anti-Everton, Liverpool, and scouse insults came flying out because I laughed as they honestly believe they are a bigger club than us.

So I asked if any of them where around my age (57) and this guy says "Yeah, and I have followed the Toon etc..." So I went to the dart board, took a piece of chalk and wrote down all the things I have seen us win in my lifetime, starting with the League in '63 up to the Cup in '95. Then gave him the chalk and asked him to put down his memories ? and even said he could use promotion under Keegan in if it helped him.

Result? I was asked ? or rather told ? to drink up and go! Really good sports are the Toonites....

With all due respect to the exchanges earlier in this thread, what I find most heartening about the recent "public" exchanges between the respective Chairmen of our (Everton) and "Toon" Clubs is that they express a mutual respect for both Clubs. Cummon Guys. Never mind any "pissing contest" about the Trophy collection of our respective Clubs (OK, smirk.. EFC would win hands down.. but that?s not the point) we are both well respected, "Working Class", grass roots support based clubs. We are "The Peoples Club" of Merseyside, as are "The Toon" of Newcastle. If the Chairmen of each talk about "mutual respect", we should be happy that it exists. Better than the cutthoat world of the Chelskeys, Arse, etc

Newcastle are not a big club, Everton have fans from all over the country, I know of fans from london, where i live in Blackpool we are probably the most followed team after Man U and the Redshites. Jeez I even know an Everton fan in New Zealand. Never met a newcastle fan in my life. Maybe the whole of Newcastle supports them but I never see one from around my end. End of discussion.

Alex as they say its all gone quiet over there.
As the editor and ex scouser I thought you?d have had a bit more to say for yourself.
As an (unfortunatley)old supporter I remember the days when Geordies (Newcastle) fans were incredible I remeber Tony Cotte scoring a hat thrick against them we were winning 5-0 and the supporters still cheered them on.
UNFORTUNATELY LIFE HAS CHANGED
particularly in Newcastle where a large number of Everonians and other teams supporters will tell you the bitterness and anger is unbelievable. As for the stewards (who I assume are Geordies)They are the biggest bunch of bastards going as some of their own supporters will tell you.
YOU are obviously out of touch with reality or mixing with the old set but get real for god?s sake and dont come on here preaching to people who have experienced the venom first hand.Just look at big sam love him or hate him he was treated to absolute venom and for what trying his best to change a shit club with shit players and apparently a shit chairman.

I find all this slagging off of Newcastle a bit depressing, as well a strangely vitriolic.

Yes, the Newcastle fans might be deluded. But there are plenty on here that are deluded too. Newcastle fans are being painted as bieng narrow minded and aggressive - but that is often true of Everton fans too (and fans of other teams). I remember going to Sheff Wed away and some of our scrotes got off the coach and started with ?let?s give it to these farmers? etc, neatly ingoring the fact that Sheffield is as big a city as Liverpool, not some sort of country outpost.

Newcastle are probbaly my least favourite team in the prem (after Liverpool) but their gates are impressive. I can only assume that those saying that it is easy to get 50k gates as there is no competition there have never travelled around that area. Newcastle is a mid sized city stuck in the middle of a farming area. Northumberland is probably the least populated county in the whole of England, so getting 50k people to watch the game is a sign that they are NOW very dedicated to their team, even if they weren?t in the 1980s (although all teams had lower attendences then - including us).

For the record, my inlaws are all Newcastle season ticket holders so I will probably, like Alex, be told to fuck off by some of the bigots who have posted above. But I don?t much care, I have supported Everton for 30 years and am happy to make the case that Everton are a great club without having to demean all other clubs at the same time.

Back to the original point, Moyes would be mad to go to the Bar Codes.

Jay,

I just think it?s unfair to tar all Mags with the same brush, as is the case for any set of fans, whoever they support.

Some fans did turn on him, that?s for sure, and I never commented on the chairman or set up at the club.

As I said before, the expectations of the club are extremely high, which has lead to anger and frustration here - misplaced on the manager maybe, maybe not?

We know it?s taken seasons for Moyes to have impact on this club and I?ve talked to many Mags about this.

Many agree with the concept of steady progression towards a better future for the club.

Whether or not Sam could have turned it around is another arguement. I would have kept him on till the end of the season at least.

I?m not the editor by the way..

And I?m sad to hear that many blues have had bad experiences of Newcastle. In the six years I ?ve been here I?ve never experienced venom - usually just banter.
Mike Carlisle

I have to also admit that I find the bitterness towards the Newcastle fans strange.

Fair enough, they have their fair share of complete whoppers-We see them clearly enough on every televised Newcastle game with their shirts off and guts out saying "look at me, look at me, arent we great".

However, a lot of blame for this image has to fall on the media for the cheap and lazy way of stereotyping one set of fans by the simple action of using a close up every game on the same group of fans and the usual "best fans in the Country" comments that they make.

Of course they are going to say this. Look at the BBC coverage for God’s sake. Its not exactly impartial. Shearer will always be the pundit for Newcatle games in the same way that ex players will always be brought in to give a positive slant on their old teams coverage whatever channel the footy is on.

And i’d be very surprised if anyone on this site here could say hand on heart that they have not experienced or have to sit close to a complete whopper of a fan at our games.

Dave, just because you read some unsavoury remarks a few years ago after we finished fourth doesnt justify your responses now. Rise above that minority mate. The internet is clearly not representative of every teams fan base. If that was the case, then the Kirkby vote would have been 95% NO if we went by the type of responses on this site before the vote was made.

NUFC are only a ’big’ club in terms of support and arguably money but that’s only because they’re a one club city. If Liverpool only had one club there’d be 75/80K each week, same for Birmingham and even more for Manchester
It’s never going to happen but if Moyes was to go to them it would be a massive step down and set him back 5yrs in his achievements and career

Thanks to Mike and Chris for the support and sense.

I’ve always like to think we get repect from other clubs because of the conduct, reputation and attitude of our fans - Nuremberg being a perfect example of this.

When I was out there their fans had nothing but praise for our club and, judging from the press over there, our fans.

It still intrigues me as a fan of Everton for over 45 years that a club like Newcastle United can get all the attention they do from the media. The reality is that their last title win was before Dixie?s 60 goal season (1927/8) and James Dean was still making films when they last won the FA Cup (1955). Quite astonishing when you think that , during these 81 years, EFC have always been in the top flight-save for four seasons - and have won seven league titles and since 1955 three FA cups. Yet I infer from the media?s handling we?re the sort of "little club" whose manager may want to take a step upwards to bigtime Newcastle!!!!

Another ex-pat in the North East here. I do have to say that a sizeable minortiy of Skunks are the most horrible, one-eyed fans in the country. There are however very many ’canny’ lads who follow their local football club with a passion as we all do, and who despair at the actions of the board and some of their fellow fans.

I have no respect for the club but a lot for many of their fans (the Makems are better fans though!)

And if you want to avoid the worst of the gobshites on a match day, don’t drink in the Bigg Market. That’s a nest of benefit spending vipers on any day of the week.

I think Newcastle can never become BIG, in the sense of breaking into the top 4 on a regular basis, not simply because of general mismanagement, but also because of its proximity. To get the best players in the world, a club needs to be based in London or the North West (Liverpool to Manchester). Because Newcastle is situated in part of the country that lacks big cosmopolitan cities, then footballers? will always view it with some distaste. I believe this is one reason why Newcastle consistently pay absurdly large amounts of money for talent. The only way to attract bigger players is to double their salaries. Obviously, unless they have a bottomless pit, this cannot go on forever. Expect Newcastle to continue to consistently languish in mid-table.
