It's Started... the Capital of Kopites

Comments (59)

On BBC Breakfast this morning - an item about the City of Culture "kick-off" today. Lots of stock footage of the Liver Buildings, the Fab Four, LFC's badge on their gates, the Shankly statue, fans queuing, Alexei Sayle saying that true scousers are born within earshot of the Kop.... and of Everton? What a surprise, no mention whatsoever. I really hope we beat Man City & Liverpool lose this weekend, so we can be above them at the start of the CofC year ? that'll get up the noses of the media...

I saw that report and it pissed me off no end. They mentioned the city being famous for football and no mention or shots of the ORIGINAL/FIRST league club in the cty.

Does this not just add to the proof that Liverpool City Council are nothing but a bunch of shitesters. These twats put the redshite first on all occasions and treat us like second rate citizens, no wonder we are fucking off to Kirby and all you doubters about the move and " keep it liverpool" you must be fucking mad, why should we do any thing that twatish City council shaft you on!

I thought it was just the colours. Red with a yellow trim - hmmmm. Where have we seen that before?

And the whole thing kicks off this week with Ringo performing a concert from St George?s Hall.

Obviously nothing excites me more than the prospect of watching the least popular Beatle play songs that he didn't write, on a rooftop so high that nobody can see him. Despite this, as a scouser I am still proud of the award that our fair city has been given, and have been taking in all the news reports over the last week or so.

North West Tonight carried a lengthy piece about the homecoming gig of everyone?s favourite train-based narrator. And it wasn?t a bad report at all.

That was until The Culture Company?s very own Phil 'I invented Brookie you know la' Redmond appears on the box, complete with Peter Stringfellow barnet. He procedes to tell us that the whole event is to signify 'music coming home' just as (deep breath) the European Cup has done five times, most recently when the RS won it in Istanbul. He then flashed that oh-so-clever '5 Times' sign with his fingers that we all know and love, just so we were left in no doubt as to how close to the fence his red arse actually is. (Apparently RS supporters down in Exeter were particularly gutted after their defeat to Milan in Athens, as they subsequently missed out on the chance to use their cumbersome sixth digit with a new and improved hand gesture.)

How an official member of The Culture Company can so flippantly choose to alienate half of the city by drawing an analogy between one of the biggest events here for years, and a RS penalty shoot-out trophy homecoming is short-sighted at best.

At worst it is simply unacceptable - The Culture Company were set up to run the events for 2008. They were not set up to gloat about past achievements of one of the clubs that resides here.

How disgusting... I am really miffed by what I have read above and intend e - mailing BBC Breakfast and letting them know what I think.

If anyone else wants to do this the e-mail address is

breakfasttv@bbc.co.uk

Perhaps if enough of us Evertonians do this we might at least get a mention on the Show - may be worth a try.

Oh yes, I see from the programme of events that Paul McCartney will be holding a Concert in June and guess where... ...that?s right Anfield Stadium... poor publicity for the arseholes.

Paul, you forgot to realise - in the BBC’s the media’s and Hollywood’s perfect little world, all scousers are Kopites.

Just look at 51st state! Its bad enough that Robert Carlyle can’t do a scouse accent, but making him an Liverpool fan obsessed with getting tickets to the Liverpool - Man Utd game?

No, i have lost all faith in any of the aboves abillity to report accurately Everton, and our role in the city. Although - to be fair, I’m quite used to us not exsisting now!

Don?t blame the LCC what the fuck are our director?s and Chairman doing to promote Everton or market our name??? We are run by a total bunch of dickheads!!!!

I?ll never forget when that Kenwright said THAT song brought a lump to his throat!!!

I know what I would of liked to bring a lump too. Stop looking for excuses and look for the root cause of the problem. Kenwright AKA Dr Fun.

9   Posted 11/01/2008 at 13:14:40

Ah, but in 51st state he was a total and complete tosser so there was some accuracy.

Also in Brookie one of the cast, who was an absolute true blue, was forced to pretend to be a kopite.

We need more Everton supporting playwrights to producers; if only we could find one.....
Paul Turner
10   Posted 11/01/2008 at 13:12:59

Paul C - sadly, I did and do realise that "all scousers are kopites" in the media’s eyes. Which is why I’d love it if we could leapfrog the RS this weekend in particular. Mind you, in the eyes of other sections of the media, all scousers are burglars, car thieves, dole cheats etc...

Although I’m relatively a "woollyback" - I was born in Waterloo - I’m proud of our city, and proud to say I was born there. In an ideal world, Everton would remain there (but that’s another story...)

My wish for 2008 is for Everton FC to contribute to the city’s celebrations by bringing home a trophy - preferably the UEFA Cup - and to prove that there is another football club (in fact, THE ORIGINAL club) in Liverpool. COYB!!

11   Posted 11/01/2008 at 13:07:44

I’m only surprised that you are all surprised. It is not paranoia which makes me suggest that there is a long term agenda here, both nationally and locally; just the plain facts.

The national agenda is based on ignorance of the history of the City and of Everton in particular. Off the back of Liverpool’s success in Europe (it has to be cos they’ve won little else for the past 17 years) they have attracted a fair weather fan base across the country, who have never seen their team except via the TV screen. The media, whether Press, BBC or Sky, pandesr to this. It hasn’t helped that, due to the paucity of competition in the Premier League, they have managed to finish in the top four far more often than their actual ability should have allowed. They have often effectively punched above their weight with no one to take advantage. The times are a-changing though. Everton, City Portsmouth and Villa are all biting at their heels now and their crap brand of football will soon be reflected in league placings; internal strife and a stadium they can’t afford will be icing on the cake.

At the local level I wrote an article some time ago, about how the local council had done Everton no favours and that the recent talk of finding sites for Everton was so much window dressing to cover up their lack of real commitment for the previous three years. Gone quiet again hasn’t it ? So it doesn’t surprise me when we don’t get a mention in the City of Culture extravaganza. In true Stalinist style we are being airbrushed from the City’s consciousness with indecent haste.

I’m from Liverpool, I was born in Ismay St just off Goodison Road. Liverpool where a second division side then and but for Shankly probably still would be today. The bias, ignorance and hypocisy of it all makes me both sad and sickened at the same time.

However, as they say, " don’t get mad, get even" and it would be great if we could finish above them again for the second time in three years. That may or may not happen, but whatever the media or local council dream up, always remember the words of one Mr. Brian Labone "one Evertonian is worth 20 Liverpudlians" NSNO. COYB
John Lloyd
12   Posted 11/01/2008 at 13:34:02

Not only finish above them but maybe bag a trophy (carling or Uefa!!) and be the most sucessfull team scouse team in 2008!! Then ram it down the councils throats the fucking gobshites.....
1 half of me wants this capital of culture to be a success as all eyes will be on my city etc etc........BUT the other half of it wants it to fall flat on its face because of the people who run this city the dirty, criminal, lying, cheating scum of the Liverpool city council. That includes Anderson lot & Bradleys lot......the city will prosper in spite of these people not because of these people, absolute twats.

Now lets concentrate on the blues tomorrow, beat City & we go 4th for a bit.......puts pressure on other sides around (& above us) and gives us a boost after chelsea game. COYB

Look lads, imagine it this way. If we had been awarded the city of culture in, say, 4, 6 years time, we wouldn’t have nothing to complain about, because we won’t be part of Liverpool then. So, just imagine it is 2012 - 13, and we are in Kirkby, and everything will feel so much better for you.

Jay - you really need to ease up on the exclamation marks before someone carts you off and pumps you full of valium. I’m a bit lost as to how the powers that be at Goodison Park can be held responsible for the BBC’s editorial policy. Everybody - from various posts over the last few days, it seems that whenever EFC do not get equal billing with LFC in the media there is a call for someone’s head or it least a barrage of emails to the offending parties. The Internet has really heralded the Age of The Whinge. I don?t have a problem with it being posted here, but would you go to the effort of writing a letter, sticking it in an envelop and posting it over the alleged sleight? Probably not. Remember some poor sod has to deal with all the pointless, petty emails. On the other hand?.free Valium for everyone.

During the year of culture, a play about the greatest centre forward ever Dixie Dean will take place. Expect an extended run. Also there are other plays in the pipeline.

I think you will find the people of Liverpool will be flocking to these, not the overpriced professional scousers who are returning for the first time in years. Mostly to try and rekindle their dying talents and try to get on the lucrative nostalgia tours.

There is plenty of great talent in this city, including international recognised theatre groups who are not darlings of the media.

Yellowhouse springs to mind which is run by a fellow Evertonian and is at every home game.

We all know, football culture and history in this city only meams one thing. EVERTON.

18   Posted 11/01/2008 at 13:55:40

I was a bit annoyed when I saw that piece on TV this morning, but I then thought of two reasons why the concentrated on LFC:

1. Believe it or not most people don?t know that Everton are from Liverpool - so if they showed Goodison, most people watching it may have been left scratching their heads.

2. It was supposed to link in with Alexi living within spitting distance of Anfield.

Perhaps when the BBC do more pieces throughout the year they will cover Everton. I guess emailing the BBC about it may make sure they give us the coverage we desrve.

Jay, I am beginning to totally agree with you. Our chairman has a conversation at an away game against Manchester City many years ago. That as led us into the totally ludicrous postion we are in now.

Off to a shithole in Kirkby, strongly and loyally supporrted by the other fat bastard when the majority of Evertonians know we are heading for a disater.

Jay - See the official Everton website - there is a blog on there about Everton?s part in the Celebrations.

I did e-mail the BBC breakfast show as below:

As an exiled Scouser and very proud of my roots, I looked forard to your item on this morning?s breakfast show. I was dismayed, however, that although plenty of focus was given to Liverpool FC particularly by your presenter, Alex What?shis-name [What?s he ever done for the culture of the City of Liverpool? ] that a no-biaisd picture was given.

By all means show Bill Shankley?s statue but why not Dixi Dean?s statue outside of Goodison Park - no-one has ever surpassed his goal soring tally for one season and is by far the most famous footballer from the area and who played for Everton Football Club - a founder of the Football League who were long in existence before Liverpool Football Club and who, you might not have noticed, are also in the premiership.

I think it is rather pathetic that your item was so blatently geared towards Liverpool Football Club. As the only City to have two cathedrals in the British Isles - would you have mentioned the Anglican Cathedral and disregarded the Catholic one known as Paddy?s Wigwam!! No I think not - so why leave out the other major Football Club and, dare I say it, one with more history than the other.

Alexei Sayle is a "professional scouser" and all "professional scousers" support the other lot. This is probably because they don’t really like football at all and haven’t been back to the city (if indeed they were actually born there) since they got rich.
I’d love to see Everton represented more as part of 2008, but the club will have to do a lot to bring itself to the attention of a London-based media who’s idea of an authentic scouser is Harry Enfield in a curly wig.

As a young person I was always told that the BBC was held in high esteem the world over for the honesty and equality in its reporting. I always believed it to be true until this morning when the BBC ran a piece about the capital of culture which asserted that to be a true scouser you had to be born within the sound of anfield. It is actually if you are born within the sound of the One O clock gun. Which was fired every workday at precisely 13:00. As an Evertonian and a supporter of the first football club on Merseyside I resent the BBC?s natural bias Against us which we have to suffer practically weekly on MOTD.Dont forget Anfield was once our home.I am afraid also you have been taken in by Alexi Sayle purporting to represent the population of Liverpool. As he spends most of his time away from the city then he is a representative of the average liverpool supporter but not the city of Liverpool He is known in the city as a plastic scouser which means he gets more from Liverpool than Liverpool gets from him. I hope you can broadcast this e-mail to show that the BBC is not biased and to restore my faith in the integrity of your corporation.

It is not worth getting wound up about the media. British media is lazy and spouts what the PR companies give them, hence

David Beckham is the greatest English Football Player.

The Spice Girls reunion is relevant to music.

Only the clubs with the highest financial turnover matter in the premier league.

Tony Blair is important to peace in the Arab world (when he is not bombing it)

The McCanns ar profiteering from a film of their personal disaster.

Believe little of what you read and let Liverpool Shitty Council get on with it.

A midfield of Pienaar, Osman, Fernandez and Arteta is all we need to stay happy. In fact I would not swap that with any club in the country. The shite will not be top four this year but there is a good chance we will.

There again their history only started in ’65 when they won the cup for the first time.

Let us all join together in wishing Europe’s City of Culture a good new year.

Stavanger, Norway.

The EU awarded the title to two cities (not unusually) for 2008, and I’m sure that all our Norwegian mates are justifiably happy with this. Apparently, Stavanger’s preparations haven’t been dogged by the cat-house in-fighting of their joint title holders. Good luck to them.

I’d love to see Alexei Sayle defend the accusation of being a professional scouser. For anyone interested, the last short story in his ’Barcelona Plates’ collection entitled "The Last Woman To Die In the War" is interesting reading.

An my grandad, born in Mayo (we think) and a Birkenhead docker (when he could find work) referred to himself as a scouser. Those on the other side of the water he called "whackers".

Know your history.

Why should Everton be mentioned when talking about the City of Liverpool? Afterall, thanks to Kenwright and Wyness, we are not going to be here in a few years. If you think it is bad now, just wait until we are no longer here!!
Also I think it is hypocritical of the club to be talking about being a part of the Culture celebrations while at the same time saying that the city is not good enough for the club! The bastards.

On RS Ringo, there is the immortal comment of John Lennon, when asked by an early media hack whether he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world.

John stared back incredulously. "World? He’s not the best drummer in the fucking Beatles!"

(By the way, I wouldn’t worry too much about this BBC shit. I actually don’t particularly want Everton associated with a circus of Ringo Starr and other fucking professional scousers. And I would rather see the leaders of LCC thrown off the top of St George’s Hall than do anything to help them. We are Everton and above this kind of media crap.)

And as a number of others have pointed out, this is about the lazy triviality of the media, not about us. So let’s not take it personally.

If they did a similar piece on London, there would be pictures of Stamford Bridge and the Emirates, and not a mention of anything else. And if they did Manchester of course it would be all red and all Old Trafford.

Actually, the best supported teams in Liverpool and Manchester are playing each other tomorrow. The media will be worrying about Anelka, the RS’s new centre half and all the other twats. Don’t sweat it!

Just heard that dirge of a song.Imagine what the fab four could have achieved if they’d had Starr as lead singer!
Just accept that nearly every exiled Liverpudlian "celebrity" will latch onto the RS.
As for Alexei Sayle ,he was the fat kid at school who had absolutely zilch interest in footy. He’s a mate of me brothers and we had a drink with him in a pub in Little Venice ( very luvvie ) before the 1986 final. He didn’t mention the game once!

Boy, us Evertonians have got one hell of a chip on our shoulders. Why do we always have to make out we are always being hard done by? Sky don’t like us, referee’s have got it in for us, Liverpool council hate us, the bbc don’t like us, MOTD never show us first, so they must hate us, the tabloid press don’t like us. FFS lads, get over it. The reason why the so called ’ big four ’ always get the media attention, is because they win everything. Also, the reason why the redshite have had all the coverage concerning the city of culture award, is because they are called Liverpool, after the city, and they have a football name, known all over the world. Outside of europe, nobody has probalby heard of us. We have to get away from all this ’it’s us against the world shite ’ it does make us out to just be bitter blues.

Let's be honest , I travel about our country a fair bit and more often than not when people hear my accent they assume I am a Kopite which annoys the shit out of me. I point to my Everton badge tattoo on my arm and let rip but the sad fact is because of media bias we are air-brushed out. Before long Dixie will have got his 60 goals infront of his adoring fans on the Kop.

As for the professional scousers, how many really follow football? I have never heard Marsden mention them until they adopted his song. Alexi is a tragic man and as a well known; Tory Tarby has a lot in common with the city.... they all loved our city so much they fucked off and are invited to this shin dig. It's a joke!

Fucking Jimmy Tarfuck! I’ve hated that twat ever since being forced to watch fucking Winner Takes All as a kid back in the 80’s. What the fuck is that fat fuck fucking famous for? Him, Cilla Bitch Black and Ken Cunt Dodd make my blood boil.
On a lighter note, lets hope we beat City today and go above the Shite. Nice way to start 2008

Plenty of stuff about Everton in the Capital of Culture concert this evening at the Echo Arena....and the Farm were on the bill, and they support us!

I e-mailed BBC with my comments, and received an e-mail today:

Thank you for your email.

I am sorry that you were unhappy with the piece on the City of Culture. The item involving Alexei Sayle was supposed to be his personal views about growing up in Liverpool rather than an overall look at the city as a whole. Since Alexei grew up within 500 metres of Anfield any look into his experiences about growing up in the city was going to be significantly coloured by this.

Away from the Alexei Sayle interview, the broadcast as a whole was meant to reflect the cultural events happening in Liverpool over the forthcoming year and hence the decision was made not to mention football.

Again, I apologise that you were unhappy with the piece (needless to say it was flagged up at the time by the Evertonians in the Breakfast office!) and I hope this answers your queries.

Kind regards,

BBC Breakfast
