Fernandes reception
Comments (31)
I know Manny hasn't signed yet but I sincerely hope he does. Anyway, as a long term absentee from the Old Lady, I'm wondering what kind of reception he will receive when/if he is re-introduced? Many contributors to this site have unequivocally denounced him as a traitor — will you make those feelings known?
I have a very strong belief that this move, if it happens, will be the making of Fernandes. He will be one of those players for whom Everton becomes "home" a la Duncan McKenzie and whatever follows will be mere anticlimax. Apologies for the speculative nature of this submission but I truly am intrigued as to the possible reaction of those who have so openly condemned him.

I believe he'll be welcomed with open arms, if only because no one really knows the full story on what happened back in August. I've always believed that Benfica pretty much ordered him to go Valencia because the Spaniards were prepared to pay for 50% of him what Everton had agreed to pay for
all of him — i.e. his third-party owners would retain their half.
But now it seems as though Valencia did indeed buy him outright, so who knows...? Either way, Evertonians can be pretty forgiving if it means they'll get to watch someone of his talent gracing the Hallowed Goodison turf again.

So with Moyes confirming that we have landed Fernandes again (on loan) i have started licking my lips at the prospect of having him, Arteta and Pienaar in the same midfield. The big question is, can all three play together in the same line up?

I will be at Goodison tomorrow and I sure will be ready to applaud him if he runs onto the pitch at some point during the game. I was angry and disappointed when he jumped ship to Valencia. But if the Everton players and staff are good enough to accept him back into the fold, then that’s good enough for me.

Moyes has said that it was all down to the third party that we didnt get him in the summer and I think that if he thought Fernandes had made a fool of him or Everton then he wouldnt be back at all! I for one cant wait to see him back!

He has to be registered by noon the day before the game in order to play,so I dont think he will be available anyway..unless they’ve altered the rules.

Saying that though Karl, the official site at the time and date below........
MANNY COULD FIGURE

So why would they publish this at 2pm saying he could figure? If by your reckoning it would have been to later anyway?

Charlie, Can you register a player prior to him completing a medical even if the deal subsequently falls through?..Maybe thats allowed now..in the past it was always a race to get the deal cleared by noon prior to the game...Seems as though theres a hitch somewhere though.

Can lightning strike twice? On the basis that I won’t believe it until I see him on the pitch in a blue shirt, could he be "pinched" from under our noses again? Harry Catnap cancels his normal Friday press conference and disappears off up the road with his CEO Peter Storrie - Joe Jordan then says Catnapp has had to rush off to try and sign a player on loan - off course the press would have you believe that he’s meeting the Barcodes but... just tell me I’m being completely paranoid!

Roy, he’s coming. My biggest concern is the OS proclaiming that he "could" play against city while also telling us the tickets are going fast. Then I am just an old cynic!

Guys, he has to be registered by 5 p.m. on the day before the game so it looks like he won’t be able to play :(

Why do Everton medicals take over a week?
Viv McBibian
Posted 11/01/2008 at 20:49:27
Dunno how reliable this is:
"Mikky Arteta comes back into the Blues line up after his three game suspension, which is welcome news to Moyesy as he has to do without his African trio of Joey, Peanuts and The Yak. Manny Fernandes who passed his medical at Goodison may make the Squad, but I doubt if he will make the starting eleven, and the bench is the best he can hope for..."

I have to admit, our communications guy at Everton is very poor - they always take the buscuit. Other clubs agreed deals and do a medical and all is done in a few hours....but Everton really do take the pee. Why can't they just update us?

I read David M’s bit about Manny on the OS, where he mentioned that we’d like him on a full time deal but, ’whether we would be able to afford him is another question!’.
So my question, which relates to Brian’s original is, what reaction would he get if he spends the rest of the season here in the shop window, but runs out on to the hallowed turf at Goodision next year in a red shirt (you choose which red....)....

Wayne, it's like the Arteta situation... we had the option, if other teams would have come in we simply paid the £2.5M option and he was ours by contract.
Manny will have a £12M option I believe.. if no one else comes in and we want him we?ll try negotiate it down (ala Arteta £1.8M).
But, consider this, let's hope we are falling over ourselves and totally and utterly happy customers paying 12m. The best scenario is he plays so well and does so well Valencia have people queing up. It will mean we have had great play from him and have a player worth the price tag of £12M.

As far as Manny’s reception tomorrow , I’ve been trawling all the of websites and there seems to be a very positive change of heart towards him , Most people were livid when he went to Valencia but I think a combination of the fact that DM and the squad have welcomed his return and its realised that we need him to bolster the midfield have changed a lot of attitudes , I think he’ll be given a great reception

I’ve said all along that if he did come back it would only be because he was not entirely to blame for the Valencia ’deal’. I believe that DM would never have had him back if there was a sniff of Manny being culpable. That’s just my opinion, of course.
As far as the reception is concerned, I for one, will be cheering until I’m hoarse and clapping ’til my hands sting! I really hope that he gets a good reception. I think the atmosphere will be electric tomorrow. This is a must win game, almost a pivotal point in our season. We really must get back to winning ways.
Despite all the things that have been said about him, I think his return is a massive boost to the squad and indeed the fans. I can’t wait for tomorrow, stinking cold or not, wild horses couldnt keep me away from GP tomorrow. Come on lads, we can do it!

Lue, totally agree with you, lets cheer the boys on tomorrow. And maybe, just maybe the silence from Goodison bout Manny being available tomorrow is to confuse Man City.... or am I giving the powers that be at Goodison too much credit??

Well as far as I am concerned it should be a standing ovation. Let him know we are behind him and give his confidence a boost we will never know the true facts as to why he went to Spain so let's just wipe the slate clean I an looking forward to seeing him link with Arteta and Peanut.

As far as I can tell, over the past 5 seasons Moysey has been working hard on keeping a very strong team belief.I wouldn’t think he would try to rock the boat with a potential record signing.
Obviously 3rd parties decided the Valencia deal for him. He wasn’t enjoying his football and he has jumped at the chance to come back to us. His agent too will want another slice of a transfer fee no doubt.
Welcome Manny back with open arms! He wants that blue shirt on his back I believe!

I’d never boo an Everton player - but I’m deeply suspicious of Manny’s motivation.
Him and his owners have fucked us over once and have partially created the crisis we have in central midfield and treated Everton Football Club with zero respect - if he wasn’t going to sign he should have indicated this earlier and we could have gone after someone else instead of landing the crock Gravesen.
He is a very good player, though a bit raw. A fine acquisition, but if we do sign him watch for the transfer request to a ’big four’ club if he has a half decent season.

That’ll teach me to tempt fate! ’Wild horses wouldnt keep me away from the match’ I said only a few hours ago.... well how about OH ending up in A&E after an altercation with some low life drink driver. Nasty, nasty head wound, badly bruised shin, knee and jaw and blood everywhere.
Thank the Lord, everything is okay, bruises and stitches and blood stained uniform I can cope with, anything else doesnt bear thinking about.
So, give Manny a shout from me, Patty, or any other ladies going to the match, give him a snog from me too (Ah, if only).
Must go and administer soothing words of comfort now.Bless ’im.
Come on you Blues!

I was in Cork and picked up the Irish Times that said Fernandes had snubbed EFC. My first reaction was that he had got cheesed off waiting for EFC to conclude the deal. Let's face it, if you are faced with the continual delays that EFC always seem to get in their transfers, it makes you wonder.
However, once again it's the same story. Fernandes was in the bag last time and actually attended the Blackburn game. Let's hope that EFC have learned their lesson. However, it apears we stil have not signed him.

Ron, it’s on the Premier League official website so he has been signed but not in time to play today it seems.

I already posted this on this site, but since the Manuel Fernandes speculation reappeared I’d like to present Benfica’s side of the story:
As a Benfica fan I can assure you Benfica did not put pressure on Fernandes.
In fact, we didn?t even want to sell him. The only reason he was joining Everton was because Everton said they would pay his release clause so there was nothing Benfica could do.
Also, when Fernandes learned of Everton interest in paying his release clause he left Portugal and flew to England right before our first match of the season (against Kobeanaven for CL qualifyers, he didn?t want to play in Europe to avoid putting a possible transfer in danger ) without telling the coach. This angered most Benfica fans who saw the best palyer in pre season leaving without notice.
From what I know the problem was Everton only wanted to buy the 50% Benfica owned but the FA wouldn?t allow that.So while Everton was deciding whether to pay the 12 million pounds or not Valencia appeared, and payed them. Once again Benfica could do nothing.
Fernandes choose Valencia probably because he would be better payed but I think he also didn?t want to risk denying Valencia and then seeing Everton reject him.He would have to come back and Benfica fans would want him to rot in the youth team (me included).
Just wanted to give you Benfica point of view.
Best of luck to the rest of the season!

Thank you Santosh, everything is okay. Battered and bruised (and that’s just his ego!) Milking it and I’m having to run around doing EVERYTHING but hey, he’s worth it!
Thanks again, hope you and yours are all well.
Thank you Everton for making a crappy day into a not quite so crappy day!

Brian, I think we must start a Evertonian club house in Cape Town. DId you read the papers that fuckin Man U are coming to town again. I really don’t understand why they don’t consider bringing the team down to SA. I’ve been pleading for the last 3 years, but for some reason they just go to the US. Surely Cape Town has a huge huge Everton following and it could be perfect preparation for the team and great for us Cape Town based Evertonians?
About the Manny saga, if he’s just using us to get snapped by one of the "big four" I"m really gonna be pissed, cause this kid and his agent are fucking us big time!
