The Manny medical

Basically I just wanted to know the importance of a medical for a player who is only going to be signing (initially that is) on a short term loan? Just sign him on loan and give him 6 months. If he is knackered then surely we just do not sign him permanently and conversely he has 6 months to prove his fitness prior to a transfer. After all how did Tommy pass his medical?
And, finally, medicals shouldn't be the be all and end all of transfers, what if say Anelka does his cruciates this weekend, he would have passed his medical today and then (hypothetically) suffered an injury ? the medical becomes useless. Granted the club doesn't want to sign crocks, but it never stopped Everton signing Pistone (the second time) or indeed Gravesen.

I'm not sure if there is a different process when you're signing a player on a temporary basis ? I may be wrong but I think this £500,000 short-term acquisition is technically different from the usual loan deal ? but surely the value of a medical is to ensure that the player you're acquiring doesn't have an injury that would mean he would spend most of his time on the treatment table... thereby rendering his acquisition in the first place as pointless.
Yes, of course the player could get crocked in his first game but you can't help what hasn't happened yet. You can, as was the case with Mikael Forssell and Sean Davis, put the brakes on a transfer on the basis of a pre-existing condition and have enough time in the transfer window to find someone else.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Everton now give players a two-day medical? May be awaiting medical results?

Insurance...
We’re not just taking on a player for 500k. We will also have to insure him in case he suffers a career ending injury. That is a £12m liability.
Not really worth the risk just to keep the whingers happy.

We’d all be moaning if we got him on a 6 month loan, and he turned out to be crocked. Why would the club not check? His salary alone for this period will be in the region of £500k I’d have thought - plus the reported £500k we’re paying the club...if I was spending a lot of money on something (i.e. a car), I’d want to be sure it worked properly (before I drove it off the forecourt - even if I did crash it on the way home!)...
Before anyone shoots down my figures for being inaccurate (can’t remember where I got them), it doesn’t really matter - the principal is still the same innit!

Spot on; insurance. A two-day tougher medical = lower insurance preimums.

Just spotted Manny running past our house,
closely followed by DM on a racer holding a stopwatch.

The latest news looks as though he has all but signed.I am assuming that personal terms went well and everything is agreed because Moyes has spoke about him now being an Everton player..The medicals are vigourous these days and yes Everton do have two part medical over two days..Remember the Sean Davis saga?. I think he has about three before we decided he couldnt make it..Fernandes will sign, probably officially on over the weekend or Monday at the latest so i doubt he will play a part against City but as long as we get him in thats the main thing..

I imagine that the option to buy is key... It would most likely be all part of the same process.

What I want to know is why an EFC medical takes ten times longer than a Chelsea medical. Do we employ Dr Finlay to do them. Is our Doctor like the one in Reginald Perrin. Maybe our Doctor is infact Jim Dale from the carry on movies. Whoever he or she is lets sack him and get one that can do a medical as quick as all other clubs.

Ron. thats because Chelsea have money to waste an we dont. I would rather take longer and turn a player down if he fails a medical, that way our limited funds are not wasted

Its just the "Everton way"! Nothing is simple with us. It seems that no matter what our club does there is always a problem or something to slow the whole thing down.

Maybe our new second in command Mr Earl likes to make sure before he lets the money leave his account which is fair enough just hope hes got some spare cash for a few more

The bottom line is Moyes will sign him permenent in the summer. The medical for most players is routine, but Manny has hardly played this season and according to reports has been partying in Spain, so it makes sense he is but through a strict medical. Fitness tests can take 2 days, if the player is not 100%, they would put him through a few more tests, it is common sense.

I still can not understand the obligatory medical delay. We have signed players at 11:59 on deadline day. No mention is made of two-day medicals. I see no reason why we have to spend two days on some medicals and at other times one minute. I have read on the EFC web site that Moyes thinks Manny could figure against MC. It seems that David Moyes has no control over the medical or any idea about how long it takes. The whole thing seems like a farce. A smoke screen for other things maybe.

Panic panic panic!!
Relax kids, he might be in the squad for the City game today - the OS reports that he may be registered in time to play today so chill out. If he isn’t then he’ll be ready for the next game.

I think it?s pretty likely that Moyes doesn?t want to give anything away in terms of the City game today. Don?t be surprised to see him on the bench. If he?d come out and said that he?ll definitely be playing today then City will know how to prepare and what to expect. He?s probably just keeping his cards close to his chest as Davey always does.

I think that Everton?s thoroughness regarding their medical assessments is a testament to how we have progressed over the last 5 years. If some Clubs chooseto have a mdical that consists of "cough twice".. "now run on that treadmill for 5 minutes" that?s a matter for them, but Moyesey?s style of play demands a high level of stamina. Then there is, as contributers have said, the situation of wages, even in a loan situation, and Insurance. At the end of the day, when the medical report is in, Moyes can still evaluate the risks. Gravo is not "crocked" but he is not as fit as he should be. If we were about to pay a huge sum for him, pitch him into the 1st 11 immediately, or even pay 100% of his salary during his loan period, that might have swayed against the deal. Manny, please God, will be at the core of our team for the next decade, and will cost us a lot of money, even in the short term. To any doubters that we are getting it right, just think "Mikael Forssell and Sean Davis"

He is finally in, my nerves can recover. Unfortunately no International Clearance to play today, but it done dusted, and though it has been a bit of a crazy week, I am happy he is finally signed and the nerves aren’t too shot up.

According to a throw away line in the team news on the OS the Fernandes deal has been completed :
" Manuel Fernandes did not recieve international clearance in time to feature, following the completion of his loan move from Valencia."
Is that it? Has the loan move been completed? He passed his medical then did he . . ? Is he definately ours?
There is nothing like your club making a big fuss about a great new signing, and that is nothing like a club making a big fuss about a great new signing.

Manny, Where are you? Is it just me? The OS stated that Manny would be here on Thursday to discuss his loan move and have his medical OK, great news. I'm a little worried there has been no news now for almost 48 Hours.
I know Everton are through when it comes to medicals (think the perma-injured Brum striker) but was hoping for a little news by now as, to be fair, we had the lad last year the paperwork should be fairly easy to draw up (copy). Why do I worry whenever we are trying to sign someone?

With the terrific Lee Carsley getting on a bit, we need to find a replacement for him. Could Manny be the perfect replacement? He is young and very talented. Moyes could try and mold him into a box to box midfielder like ex Arsenal midfielder Viera.
