Change Kit

Comments (22)

Rather a mundane topic this, far less exciting than how good or bad the manager or players iare. But it is something that intrigues me. When I was about 8, I was given an Everton change shirt ? it was yellow with blue collar and cuffs. I have supported Everton ever since (35 years) through thick and thin (quite a lot of thin).

Now our change kit is white and black, which necessitates a third change kit when we play teams like Blackburn and Birmingham. Why don't we use the traditional yellow and blue anymore?

Is it because we wouldn't need a third kit and the kit manufacturers would lose out on the sales of that kit? Is that how cynical things have become? Who makes these decisions? We got white socks back a few seasons ago, why not yellow and blue next? Got to get my anorak....

Yellow?!?! ... I think the traditionalists considered it to be "amber"; take a look at any pictures from the 1968 FA Cup Final.

I was proud of my amber and blue kit, the first Everton kit I ever had. My mum passed away 12 months ago and she bought that kit for me, it still reminds me of her. It ?ll always hold a place in my heart, that amber shirt and blue shorts, Number 8 on the back, of course!

I also find it a disgrace that we change our kit every season. What happened to the days not so long ago that we would have a kit for two years. Changing each one in different years. Also why are all the umbro designs the same? It would be nice to have a unique Everton Kit which is different from the other clubs. Back to your original point Michael I also really love the Amber and Blue and wish that it would be bought back to us in the very near future.

Sponsorship changes aside, I thought we changed our kit every two years but alternate so it?s a new home shirt one year then new away the next.

Have to admit to often really liking the plain white change strip shirt though.

I think talking of kits we should look at the salmon pink and blue shirt, it was when NEC where sponsors and I think the first Daniel Amokachi season, we only used it three times and the game I was at was Blackburn away when we lost three nil. Still have the shirt doeant fit too well now though. Worse one was the white with the tyre track on it, unreal that one.

The team wants to compete with Man Utd etc and get in the top 4 so has to go down this commercial road. It sucks but that is football in the 21st Century. As for the amber and blue kit it reminds me of when I first starting to suppport the club but we did win the 1933 Cup Final wearing white shirts so what is wrong with white. I think its good to have different away kits because you can look back at some awful shirts. Didn?t one team wear brown once.

I think the pink shirt that we saw on Ladies day should be our new change kit!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was a yellow kit last season( sorry amber! ) - the third kit...it will be back I’m sure

I think umbro are just cycling through all our 2nd colours - variations on silver grey, blue, white and yellow and treating them as a selection of once off fashion items as opposed fixed colours...they probably sell more it encourages people to change and offers a choice...I think the manures money making machine pioneered it...look at arsenal there second strip was yellow for years and now it is white and purple...

Personally I like it I have bought a few different ones and I like the idea of having a selection of different coloured jerseys for 5 a side football matches which all have one thing in common - an Everton crest!

Well we would still need a 3rd kit if our second was yellow/amber, if we were ever to play torquay wouldn’t we?!

About the yellow Kit.

I am going to reference in the last ten years when our away kit was yellow, one being Rooneys last season and sponsored by Keijan (we were almost relegated)
and another being 1999 (Umbro sponsored by one 2 one) we were nearly relegated.

The colour yellow is A signifier of cowardness. I am of the opinion atleast in the last ten years that avoiding the yellow/amber strip is a good thing for us as is the fact that we went back to playing in white socks.

Superstitious yes. But away kits in black or white for me please. No denim blue/grey and please no yellow as nowadays we fear Nobody!

We has a yellow (amber) away kit 3 seasons ago. I got for Xmas off my uncle and never wore it really, mainly becasue it was a very bright (amber) and was somewhat embarrassing.

My brother had the salmon pink and blue kit the seasson before when we were stil sponsored by one2one. It was nice in long sleeve. bring back the salmon pink.

This season I thought the 3rd kit was the pick of the bunch. As michael said earlier all of the umbro designs are the same... but I hadn?t seen the third kit design anywhere else.

Over the years we?ve had numerous away combinations. Amber/Blue,yellow/blue,white/black,all white,amber/white,pink,blue stripes/navy....but the worst strip I?ve ever seen was the "one2one" pale blue effort, followed closely by the blue with white side panels which made us look like Blackburn! Why can?t we keep a traditional blue shirt with white trimmings similar to the present strip for good? You can bet your life that it?ll change dramatically some day soon, after all, the last couple of kits have been fairly similar...

I actually really like this seasons 3rd kit. I have both the home and away strips and next time im in JJB or any other sports store I’ll be sure to keep my eyes peeled for it.

I have the 3rd Kit with Arteta on the back. Its the most individual of all of our kits and probably the nicest we?ve had for a while. everytime I wear it my older brother says he wishes he bought it instead f the home kit.

Who cares what kit we wear at the weekend so long as we keep winning!!

I like this season’s Home kit. In fact the last 3 or 4 from Umbro have all been ok.

That’s because we now have the white socks back and they MUST STAY FOREVER!! :)

I think we are the only Club in the Premier League who change every season though and that’s wrong. We’ve had 7 home kits in the last 8 season. The only time we didn’t change was, ironically, when we had the worst kit ever - that fucking hideous Puma creation with the white side panels that was all baggy and made us look like Birmingham or Bristol Rovers!!!

The thing about new kits is that we release them for special occasions, which we had a run of recently.

There was the 100 years of top flight football, the 125th anniversary, 50 consecutive years of top flight football etc etc, with a new special edition for each.

If you want the club to compete financially with the big boys, then you have to accept that we will change our kit every season, and that there will be three of them as well. Although, I do concede, amber and blue would be my preferred choice of away kit.

Karl, surely you jest?!
Manure have been at it for years... seemingly launching kits everytime they had to step over the north south divide. In fact, to my knowledge, certainly all Prem and indeed now probably all league sides launch/changed kits each season.
Personally I’d love it if we kept this kit at least for two seasons, but it won’t happen as to compete football teams are now effectively brands. If we all refused to buy the latest kit, then all that would happen is that Umbro would up and leave as soon as their contract expires and we’d have to beg Gola or someone to inject the cash that replaces their current deal.
In the same way that we are now are seeing the return of white cars being cool, I’m sure that someone at Umbro (or whoever) will come up with a rationale to return to amber, with a slightly tweaked collar of course.

It’s a Premier League rule, not simply a money-making tactic by the clubs or the manufacturers, that all teams have to register three kits.

For the record I like the white shirt and black shorts change kit. Every amber/yellow kit we’ve had in my time has been awful.

The pink kit was the best, anyone remember that? Had NEC on it, 93-96 region. Pink stripes!

Would love to have seen the boys in Europe wearing something similar to the Inter Milan away kit of the sixties (?)................basically the black and white kit with the addition of single blue and black hoops on the shirt, with the badge slapped right in the middle.........class all the way !

Sorry amber! There’s another dimension to this. Several years ago Desmond Morris brought out a book called The Soccer Tribe. At one point, when discussing kits, he found it strange that so few clubs wore yellow/amber or orange, since these colours are used in nature to signify danger. Also, they are more visible, which is why so few clubs wear green.

Just a couple of other responses to the comments - Coventry once had a brown away kit, which was, needless to say, rather hideous. And I also have the salmon pink and navy striped shirt which, like Peter Bradshaw’s, doesn;t fit too well anymore. Must have used substandard shrinking material!

For those of us who are a little older and remember the amber/blue kits of the late 60?s and 70?s the comments I associate with it are

Switching on MOTD to watch them and saying "Now I know why we lost - we were in that amber/blue kit" or alternatively turning up at the ground (be it GP, Wembley or any away ground) and as the team came out, burying faces in hands and screaming "Nooooo, that?s it. May as well go home now" as we saw our heros in Yellow/Blue kits.

Here is a good one for the Everton statisticians. What was our victory percentage when we played in amber/yellow? I am sure it is below 10%.

So no more yellow/amber please! End of debate.
