More signings?

Comments (91)

<% 'Reinstated as I'd already penned my reply by the time you binned it! -- LL %> I know this is a bit of a football manager type question but im interested in what other Blues think of the current first team squad and if they feel we need to add another player or two in this window.

It looks like Faddy is on his way and Grav looks like he could be going too. I still feel we are a little short in Midfield cover. I was travelling in Australia last year so only saw a few games in which Fernandes played, but he appears to be more of a central player. We could be a little short on the left.

I expect Moyes not to give to much away anyway so it will just have to be wait and see. Although as many have already said on this site Arshavin would be nice!

I think that if both McFadden and Gravesen leave ? as is looking more and more likely ? then we would really have to be looking to replace them both if we are serious about cracking the top four this season. Unfortunately, it seems likely that the purse strings will be drawn and that even the money we would get for McFadden would have to go towards servicing the new debt we took on last August... or at the very least be needed in the summer to finance any move to make Fernandes permanent.
Mike Oliver

We could probably do with more numbers in the squad but I agree with Lyndon that it’s unlikely.

However, if we were to get the rumoured target of £5m for McFadden; then losing him and Gravesen and replacing them both with Fernandes and Sidwell on loan would be great business I think.

How many loan signings can we have? I thought we were limited to 2 so we’d have to actually sign Sidwell. I’d be disappointed if selling Faddy meant servicing debt taken on last August. Doesn’t that make us a selling club again?
Mark Griffiths
3   Posted 16/01/2008 at 19:00:52

We just do not know for sure how much money will be availbale for transfers or whether moyes will need to save his money for the summer?

I s it true you can only have 2 loan signings?? if so as alan has stated we could not get sidwell???

I really think we need to get more numbers in midfield if grav and faddy go, because if we don?t and get injuries and suspensions, it will be hard to finish in the top 6.

But i think moyes knows what he is doing and surley the club has learnt from 2005!!! Investment!!!!

Lyndon - why do think that the cash from McFadden’s sales will not be re-invested & simply used to service our debt? Are you basing this view on any knowledge or just a pessimistic "gut feel"???

As for the question - I see we’re being heavily linked with a loan move for Sidwell - who’s a very tidy player IMO.
But I’d have liked to see us move for Diarra, who could be the perfect competition / eventual replacement for, Carsley.

There is no harm in loaning Sidwell for 6 months. However we are in the unique position to be looking upwards & forwards. Knee-jerk reactions are no longer a DM hallmark, so expect noone.

I no longer get excited about signings anymore unless they are of the Fernandes, Yakubu kind. So I pray to God that we offload the grunts & target our resources on only 1 or 2 additions (including Fernandes & Pienaar) who inspire our already inspirational match winners to improve.
Dan Mckie
6   Posted 16/01/2008 at 19:18:23

Your only allowed 2 domestic loan signings at a time and we currently dont have any so we could move for Sidwell if it isnt just paper talk!
Mark Griffiths
7   Posted 16/01/2008 at 19:22:18

Thanks dan for clearing that up.

I really would not want sidwell on a perm, but i suppose a loan for the rest of the season would be ok for cover, but i really do not think he would add that much to us.

I think we need a winger, another creative midfielder and def midfielder and we are good to go, but i cannot see that happening.
James Elworthy
8   Posted 16/01/2008 at 19:30:47

Sidwell & Arshavin would do me plus Van Buyten on loan
Steve Taylor
9   Posted 16/01/2008 at 19:29:49

Do we really need an out & out winger? With Peanut & Arteta as first choice wide men, with Fernandes an option on both flanks (I remember him playing wide left in a game or 2 last time round)

Surely the position we have no cover in should be the priority? & that is defensive midfield - poor old Cars has had to play on, whilst others were rested, as we simply haven’t got any decent cover in that position, as Neville & Jags aren’t a patch on him in DM.

Unless Moyes is intending Manny to play there?

Just a rumour then Lyndon? If we fail towards the end of the season because of lack of numbers due to sales the the club stands to lose a lot of the good feeling there is now about the club. Without this "rumour" Lyndon, do you think that we will buy or loan any more players?
Ron Leith
12   Posted 16/01/2008 at 21:17:32

Of the players being touted around at present Sidwell and Diarra appear to be the best options to spend £5m on. Surely the McFadden money would be a windfall that should not be be set aside. Why would we sell Neville and Hibbet two of the best defenders around. Hibbert was brilliant against Petrov and Neville is an inspirational captain. As an outside bet I would like to see Hunt as he is an Everton type of player.

13   Posted 16/01/2008 at 21:22:00

I just hope if Moyes has got his eye on any players get the business sorte before that complete gobshite Keegan comes in and starts inflating transfer fees like he done last time he was down there. You can see it players with a price tag of 4 million, then dickhead comes in with a 10 million bid, them geordies are starting to do my head in, they have got to be the most deluded people on this planet.
Keith Glazzard
14   Posted 16/01/2008 at 21:09:08

Tommy Gravesen was grafted in as long-stop cover, and if there is any truth at all in the rumours, he may go.

Faddy is an entirely different matter - part of Moyes’ core squad. If the money really is there, and he fancies his chances at Brum with a manager he knows, I think Moyes would let him go - that way round.

If Tommy goes, I would expect nothing much to happen as the new lad, young as he is, might as well sit on the bench. But if Faddy goes, someone will be brought in to replace him. A loan? Using some of the 5 million to buy? Who knows, but Moyes would be doing something.

Sell Nev and Hibbo next summer? I wouldn’t, and I’ll bet you Moyes won’t either.

Maybe West Ham????

Mick - just read your comment about the Newky broons, and I totally agree. Don’t forget though, that there are plenty of other no-hopers around who can outbid us. Very few players are going anywhere this January, and if they’re worth having they will fancy coming to us.

I agree, get transfer business sown up now before these plonkers offer ridiculous wages to all and sundry. I wouldn’t worry though about those Geordies, this is another Howard Kendall MKII job, never return to past ’glories’ etc etc. Watch him bottle it and bugger off again

Phil Neville leave Everton, while Moyes is manager, club captain, Met Neville in a shop in Chester last season and just by talking to him you could tell he loves Everton now, not a chance. Neville is supposed to be spot on in the dressing room, the players give him loads of respect and Moyes trusts him.
Jay Campbell
19   Posted 16/01/2008 at 22:02:50

Lyndon’s probably spot on can’t see any new faces this month maybe Sidwell on loan but that’s about it. We have enough cover up front anyway and McFadden’s sale for 5 million is great business

Just been confirmed on Sky - Faddy is going to Brum. Clubs have agreed fee but they aint saying how much. Naturally nothing on the OS. Should be finalised in the morning.

By the way when are we going to take a leaf out of Chelski’s book when it comes to increasing the transfer kitty. Take players on a free in the summer, leave them on the bench all season then sell them in January.
Joe McParland

I don’t think Moyes would sell Faddy at this point of the season if he wasn’t getting in a replacement so I think Lyndon’s wide of the mark suggesting the cash will be used to balance the books. Moyes would surely keep hold of him until the end of the season rather than risk being short on numbers.

Why don’t we get shot of Gravesen & loan Gilberto Silva! World Cup winner, Premier League Winner, Champions League Runner-Up, Former Brazil & Arsenal Captain, Box-to-Box CDM enforcer, tall, quick, great passer/shooter, all round professional & hungry to prove a point!

At 31 he could do the job for 4 years whilst grooming our youngsters and he would only cost us £3M as he has 1 year left on his contract!

If we don’t sign Arshavin, I would consider Park Ji Seung. Third choice at Man Utd, has an F1 engine & has impressed me since his PSV days.

His only fault is his defending, but could you imagine the Asian revenue if their national treasure had Chang across his chest?
Sean Condon
45   Posted 17/01/2008 at 02:12:58

I slandered Sidwell on this site last week for what he did to Carsley, but I?d take him in an instant. Surely this would mean that we would never have to see Carsley and Neville in midfield together again. No disrespect to our captain or Lee (I think #26 would walk into virtually any prem 11 at the moment ? he is having a fucking unbelievable season) but I believe Sidwell to be a better player than Phil. He?s skilled, committed and surely hungry for it having rotted in the Pensioner?s reserves for the first few months of the campaign.
Brendan Woods
46   Posted 17/01/2008 at 04:41:47

Doesn’t Faddy’s contract contain some sort of sell-on clause percentage to be paid to Motherwell? Thereby reducing the potential amount to be pumped into the purchase of a new player.

Also i think Vogel for 0 would not be a bad idea at all.
Peter Corcoran
47   Posted 17/01/2008 at 07:25:29

Koumas, Park Ji Seung? You must be joking!

Buying someone now is probably not going to happen. I agree with Lyndon that the books will have to be balanced. This may surprise some of you but loans have to be repaid at some point, otherwise we’ll turn into Leeds United.

But I do agree we need someone as Fernandes in and McFadden and Graveson out does leave us with a shortage - maybe Jack Rodwell will be given a run out in some of the less testing games? Is there anyone else in the reserves?
James Elworthy
48   Posted 17/01/2008 at 08:34:42

If Faddy is a great player why is he joining a team fighting relegation. Why didnt a top 8 club or the big 2 in Scotland put in a bid.
The only person who definitely wanted him was his ex Scotland manager.
His odd flash of brilliance was too occasional for me and we have cashed in and hopefully move for a better player, whether that be Arshavin or Sidwell.
John Lloyd
49   Posted 17/01/2008 at 08:35:43

Wish Mcfadden luck at Brum, hope he has a good career except when he comes back here when I hope he has one of them games, which he more often than not had for us.

Sidwell could be interesting, but why do people keep saying its Carsleys place he would go into? He has NEVER played in a holding role for Reading or Chelsea, as a Reading fan pointed out on here on another thread he is an energetic box to box player more similar to Cahill (not as good) than anyone?? He would bolster the midfield but if your suggesting he could be Cars replacement/cover, then you’ve never watched him play.

John Lloyd - for me, you sum it up in your last sentence.
Of all the players that people are clambering for, how many of us have actually seen them play on a regular basis?
Vogel, Arshavin?
I’d like to think that I keep abreast of continantal football as much as the next fella, but I have no idea what qualities they would bring to our team.
Lets leave the signings to the manager.
Dan Pedersen

If you know a player and likes him to come to Everton or speculate about it, shut up!

Because it is just FM!

In general dont speak about football, just keep your mouth shut and watchm no passion, no comments just shut up!

I hate these people come on its football, its all about names, who you like, is he interesting, i saw him on the tube, its bullshit yes, but lovely bullshit, and some people in here actually know a lot about clubs, players ... its not all FM!

I can’t help thinking that selling McFadden is a mistake. In games when the chips are down and we need a goal, he has popped up with a bit of magic for us: Charlton last year when he scored that spectacular volley in the last minute to pretty much tie up UEFA qualification, Blackburn this season when we were struggling at 0-1, and finally Kharkiv away when we were under the cosh and looking like we were going out of Europe. Who else will be able to come on and provide that bit of flair to unlock a defence? Personally speaking I would have preferred us to have sold Johnson as this Everton team has moved on from him.
Peter Corcoran
54   Posted 17/01/2008 at 11:13:22

Dan Pederson - have you been drinking?

Good new is that we may have some extra money available now that we’ve signed a new £8million shirt deal with Chang so hopefully we can afford a new player - but who?

How many of us had seen or heard much about Jolean Lescott before he came to us?

Nobody else took a chance with Tim Cahill on the step up from the lower division, but Moyes did.

Who would have thought Arteta would be such a success after hsi spell at Rangers?

Who had heard of Fernandes before he came to us last year?

And here’s one to set the cat amongst the pigeons - who thought Phil Neville wasas good a player as he has been for us? I thought he was useless an Man Utd but he has contributed significantly to our squad, even if fans think hecan’t pass or tackle!

Whilst I too like to read other fans opinions and ideas as to who we should bring in, even if I don’t agree with them, we have to rely on the manager to get in the right players and despite my lack of faith in him in the past, he is doing a good job at the moment and the squad is looking full of quality. Long may it continue.

My choice for new signing? David Bentley from Blackburn, although won’t want to sell unless the money is right.
Matt Philips
55   Posted 17/01/2008 at 11:29:17

Jason Broome: Park Ji Sung is South Korean and Chang is Thai - I don’t think that partnership would necessariliy result in extra ’Asian’ revenue.

Even if McFadden goes, I don’t think we’ll see anymore new faces this transfer window. Our midfield options are Cahill, Arteta, Osman, Fernandes, Carsley, Neville, Graveson, with Pienaar to come back and Gosling to perhaps make a cameo before the end of the season. I believe this at an optimum level.

We all know Moyes likes his small, manageable squad which in itself creates a siege mentality and a great team spirit. I personally love the way Everton are playing at the moment; not necessarily the quality of the actual football (which has increased significantly this year), but the fact that the players on the pitch seem to work so hard for each other with a togetherness I don’t see from any of our rivals. I’d suggest we are the best, if not the only, ’team’ in the League. Couple this with a tablespoon of quality, which we now have, the future on the pitch should be extremely bright, providing the player’s attitude remains the same which in turn is reliant on the squad staying manageable.

So let’s get behind our current squad COYB!!

I havent read all the posts but it looks like Jimmy Mc will be on his way and Graveson might aswell have been sold, we had only 16 fit players on Saturday, and lets be honest the jury is still out on Fernandes, not his ability but his attitude, his he 100% commited to EFC? will he be looking at a move back to Portugul in the summer? we just dont know what he really wants. I think moyes will make another signing before the end of the month, we talk about gate grashing the sky 4 to do this we need more quality in depth, injuries, suspensions etc.

Sorry to see Faddy go - yes he perhaps never did himself justice, but given a decent run in the team I think he would have reproduced his Scotland form for Everton.Let’s not forget he has had the knack of scoring for us when we have needed to pull something out of the fire.
Personally I think we need to add more players to the squad, rather than transfer players away from Goodison. A player I would like to see us sign is Hunt from Reading - I think he would do a good job either as a striker or in midfield.
Jeremy Benson
58   Posted 17/01/2008 at 12:50:24

A decent run in the team.? That is getting to be a very old, and factually incorrecrt, chestnut.

Faddy has had plenty of opportunity in the first team, and plenty of appearances either as sub or from the start. However, you only become a first team regular, if you are good enough.

60   Posted 17/01/2008 at 13:36:29

Steve, I think Portsmouth are offering him silly wages. I also think Moyes has been wise to steer clear of Diarra with Spurs, The Toon and Pompey all showing interest there was no way that we were ever going to get a decent deal on him! Great player but not worth £60,000 a week.

One of the things I admire most about Moyes is his care in the transfer market. The average wage at EFC will be well below many of our peers and long may it continue. Players are payed too much and it’s killing the game!

If Faddy and Grav go then we defo need atleast one player in. Why would he have bothered getting Grav in the first place if we didn’t need the cover?

COYB!

Paul, with Faddy leaving for such a substantial price and Tommy too staring the exit sign in the face (shame he hasnt kicked into gear since he got back- blood knee problems!) I suspect DM has a few replacements in mind. Further, with Yak away on duty on the dark continent, Tiny Tim and Ossie may play more attaqcking roles which would further suggest the purchase of a midfielder is on the cards.
Which reminds me, does anyone know if we are in any way likely to make another attempt at signing Lucho Gonzalez? My god, the idea of him sitting in midfield alongside Manny and Mikel is a dream prospect!

Arsharvin would be an interesting signing, he is about 26 so its not like buying some kid, but I would worry a little if the Russian league is the only level he has played at although very technical, I think the Prem is quicker and more physical which may take him time to get used to. Also I think his favoured position is behind the striker like Cahill.
Andrew Clare
65   Posted 17/01/2008 at 16:50:06

If we are serious about Champions League qualification then we have to be looking at players of the highest quality.
Having been brought up on the ’School of Science’ then players of the calibre of Arshavin are a must.
I just hope that the rumours are true- he is everything that Mcfadden aspired to be be-a player with vision,a player that can split a defence with one pass and a player that can shoot.
If he is truly available at around £7-8 million then we shouldn’t hesitate in signing him.
COYB.

66   Posted 17/01/2008 at 16:45:01

Arshavin would be a good signing if the rumours of Everton being interested in him are true, he can play as a second striker, center mid or on either wing. He definately looks capable of playing in the premier league, a mean he did well against us in UEFA cup and didnt look out of is depth against England in qualifiers up against the likes of Gerrard, Barry, Lampard etc! then again we did have a poor qualifying campaign where those players were poor at times. and what about Vogel?, he was good enough in the summer for free so why not now, fair does he didnt kick a ball for Betis this season but surely he kept himself fit in case he was called upon i mean he would be ideal cover for carsley.

Steve Brown: "Just a rumour then Lyndon? Without this "rumour" Lyndon, do you think that we will buy or loan any more players?"

It’s not really just a rumour, Steve; call it an educated guess stengthened by that information.

If we have an eye on buying Fernandes and Pienaar in May, want to make further signings in the summer (midfielder, winger, central defender?) and need to service the £25m mortgage taken out in August, either through Sky TV revenue (I can’t remember how much we’ve received of the staged windfall from the new TV deal) or revenue gleaned from final league placing, involvement in the Uefa Cup, etc, then I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t see any new purchases this window.

Like I said above, I really hope we do because I think now is the perfect opportunity to kick on and break the top four again... but it’s going to take a key signing or two to make that happen, I think.
Mark Griffiths

I think is just paper talk.

I have said before, I do not think he will come to us, nothing much more than a feeling i have.

Put it this way, we do not have bundles of money, so given the choice (and this may very well be the case) who would you rather have for sure signed on a perm, Fernandes or Arshavin????

I really don’t think we need anybody right now.

Wow, in all the years of being an Evertonian I have never said that and believed it.

Having said that, Arshavin would be a very interesting signing - he’s older than I thought, but there’s no doubting his talent. It won’t happen though. I think Lyndon is right - we most likely have one eye on the summer and I think Moyes is very happy with the squad right now. But still, Arshavin would be nice..

We just got a guarenteed £8 mil off Chang, I say the club just blows it :)

If Faddy has gone (99%) my bet would be that Moyes will replace him. I would have said for £2m rather than £8m. But if the Arshavin rumour has any legs at all, it has something to recommend it. We’ve seen him, and he’s seen us where it counts - on the field. Even in football today, these things can count - even though Tottingham would offer more cash.

Just driving past Finch Farm and comming towards me was a bloke on a sleigh being dragged by 6 huskies, I am sure it was Itchy Arsehavin. Looks like we might be in with a shout

With Jimmy about to depart (for a fine fee BTW - we’ve mugged them IMO)

& the likelyhood that Grav will head off to Turkey - I think we’ll definitely add another face or even 2 - albeit possibly loan deals.

Arshavin, Sidwell??? who knows, might just be a load of old crap in the tabloids - but I think DM will certainly do something.

So according to his wikipedia entry, Arshavin is on his way. ..

I particually like his parting shots.

Apparently there is interest from England and Spain but according to this Russian website Arshavin's preference is to join Everton. Personally if we could get him I think it would be a great signing.

Shaun, went on to wikipedi via your link, but cannot find anything about him coming or parting shots??

I have been looking on different websites and a few are saying that Arshavin the Russian Wizard wants to come to EVERTON. I for one think that he will be a better buy than Fernandes and Pienaar or to play along side one of them with the current players.

What if Arteta does leave in the near future, then all three with cahill would be awesome. If the guy wants to play for the greatest team on earth then we should do all we can to get him.

He tore England apart and caused us some problems, he can score, pass and wants to come to the super blues. what do you think? If I had 8m I would buy him for the team.

I’ve been trying to make some sense of those Russian translated into English links myself. The only ’truth’ I can make from it is that the guy - Arshavin - is mentioning Everton by name. So if money alone, and he will have powerful advisers advising him for their own benefit to go down this route, is the deciding factor, adios.

But he did seem to be reported as saying that we were a real option. He played a very good game here. We wouldn’t make him a poor man. I know fuck all, but its not a bad outside bet.

Zenit striker Andrei Arshavin has stated his preference in any transfer move would be a move to Goodison Park in order to prove himself in the Premier League.

Quoted on Russian website sport.ru the striker claims there has been interest from Spain as well as from Everton, but that if it came down to it, Everton would be his first choice.

He did, however, add that his club would be unlikely to sell for a small fee. The 26-year-old has played over 200 times for Zenit and scored almost 50 goals, not a bad return. With James McFadden looking all set to leave for Birmingham tonight, a player who can add some natural width to the Everton side would be a welcome investment.

Looks like we dodged a bullet on Lassana Diarra. Quote on arriving at Pompey:

"The people at Portsmouth know I will not spend my life at this club. If I shine, if a really big club wants me, I know that everything will go well."

Really glad Moyes steered well clear of Diarra, fair enough might seem like a good player, but massive wages and ego, count more in Moyes’ eyes than just ability..

Just imagine if he said this at his unveiling at GP!!

"The people at Portsmouth know I will not spend my life at this club. If I shine, if a really big club wants me, I know that everything will go well."

Well done Moyes!!

As for Arshavin, seems like a good player, but imo is just after the cash!!!

Just read on sky that we are closing in on Pascal Chimbonda!!! FFS!!!!

Is it just me or would that be a shit buy?!

Mark - cant really see that.
Chimbonda is a RB and known to not be a team player.
With Goslings signing and Chimbonda’s reputation I cant see Moyes being interested - i hope not anyway!!

Jay, the more i think about it, the more I think it?s crap, lie you said we have others like Hibbo, Neville and Gosling.

I really do think that we will be signing somebody soon, i just cannot see moyes letting McFadden going and Gravesen may be on his way (we might as well not have him anyway) so I can see at least one player coming in, probably on loan, but it could be a number of players.

Downing, Arshavin (although he seems to be putting himself in the shop window for us), Sidwell.

It seems Keegan has been given a war chest to rebuild in jan and has blank cheques, that?s not going to inflate prices is it, West Ham all over again!

I sincerely wish James McFadden the best in his future career. I genuinely hope it works out for him.

BUT... anybody recognize this player as described by Birmingham?

"He is the type of player you know you are going to get everything from for the entire 90 minutes of a game.?

"He has matured. He is a definite Premier League player. He has shown that in a very good side this season. When he has come into the side, I am not so sure anyone has looked as good as him."

?He never loses the ball and he has got that passion and commitment towards the game."

"He fights for every ball. He has got that attitude that if he loses the ball, he gets so frustrated and has to run back and chase people.?

Whoever it is, I wish he played for us...

Haha, I like this one the best though Art:-

Haha need I say more.

I know Faddy was infuriating at times, but I did like him. He never moaned to the media about not starting and had a decent work rate. Wish him all the best and hope he gets a good reception when he returns to Goodison next year. Good business by the club, lets hope Moyesy is allowed to add another body.

It seems Sidwell is sliding away from us.
EFC have baulked at his wages so I think that may be dead.I dont see he has enough quality to improve the side anyway whereas Arshavin is as good as anybody we?ve got.

Although I shouldn't be in this day and age, I still found Diarra's recent comments suprising. It sound like today's media reports are confirming he has get-out clauses in his Pompey contract and doesn't believe they are a big enough club for him and only sees them as a stepping stone. What a tosser.

I know that players in his position (ie young talented and if we are honest probably is destined for bigger things) are unlikely to stay at Pompey for the remainder of their career, its a BIG slap in the face for all Pompey fans to come out and say it on the day you sign. I for one am now glad we missed out on this bloke.

If Faddy goes, I wish him well. I think he needs a change of club for the sake of his career.

Finally on the topic of this Arshavin bloke, is he really that good? I have seen very little of him but people seem to be raving about him. Where is his best position?
