Can't believe Fernandes isn't starting

Comments (22)

See Ossie is back, but I can't believe Fernandes isn't starting. I would have put him on from the beginning and brought him off after 60. How can Moyes get a look at him pre-Chelsea if he's only on for 10 minutes?

We need some magic from Manny if we are going to break open Chelsea on Wednesday. "Same-as" and Neville in midfield will surely leave us short.

My computer tells me we’re two up at half time, so Manny or no Manny, it’s looking good!

With todays game looming and having seen the lineups, I want to quickly mention Paul Shcarner. Imo he would be an excellent addition to our squad. There have been links to him previously but nothing has been said of him for a while and controversially I think he would be a great addition for us, providing quality cover for both CB and DCM and wouldn't cost a premium.

He is only 27, right in the moyes hard-working mould and still bangs in a few. Lescott he ain't, but would be a cracking squad player. (Also, he came from Brann, so get him for any insider knowledge that might come in handy!) My ulterior motive for scrawling this pre-match is in the hope that he makes me look a total mug by playing a howler! here's hoping...

With Bramble on the pitch, we could have Wessels up front and we’d still be two up. 12th man!

LOL!!! How are we 2-0 up at half time. Awful first half performance. The pitch is definitely stiffling our new-found style, and to be honest Wigan have looked the far better side. But hey 3 points look good so far, just hope we don?t sit back and soak up the pressure. Wigan look very strong up front with their big physical lads. Hoping for a more controlled performance this half. COYB!!!!

Moyes will know what Fernandes is like in training. I think he may feel he’s better with a few more days training under his belt and then start against Chelsea. We still need the ball to stick a bit more up front today. If we start defending deep we’ll come under a lot of pressure from high balls in to Heskey and Bent. Wigan proved against all be it an out of form Blackburn that they can score goals at home. I think we need an early second half goal to knock the stuffing out of them.

I think that Moyes will have maybe thought that Osman needed the game time more than Fernandes due to him coming back from injury and if he had thrown them both in today then you run the risk of having 2 players not fully fit on the pitch!

Jeez, another nail biting 20 minutes there

A message to those red jerks running the BBC website: get that league table updated!

I doubt wether Fernandes would have done anything playing on that Bog. It looked like heavy going and all struggled.

Well, if the sign of a good team is winning when you play bad then we’ve got one hell of a team!

That was truely awful, granted the pitch was shocking but we should not be looking second rate against that Wigan team.

Again I think Moyes could have made better use of substitutes, it was good for Vaughan to get 15 minutes but I think Cahill should have come off after 60 minutes. He looked really tired again and could do with a little break, especially with Chelsea coming up. The game was crying out for a gifted central midfielder with balance, vision and control but Fernandes was left on the bench? The amount of times we gave Wigan the freedom of the middle of the park was beyond the joke.

All things said, a great result but we have to do MUCH better on Wednesday and win the battle in the middle of midfield if we are going to beat Chelsea. We can do it but I think it will need Moyes to make better use of his subs and keep the central midfield fresh, as they are inevitably going to tire badly, I can’t wait.

Can’t help thinking that Fernandes not starting was bit of ’don’t think you can come back and walk straight back into the side’ psychology. Was surpised that he didn’t come on for at least the last 10 mins though. Anyway, we won!

Moyes knows what he is doing. Osman has been great this season and has a bit extra defensively which Fernandes (who has struggled for form at his old club) lacks.

With such a poor pitch and difficult fighting opponents it made sense to give Osman the nod.

To be honest if you asked me which player is better Fernades or Osman I would would choose Ossie everyday and twice on Sunday.

Fernandes will get his chance. Its going to take time for Fernandes to put all his problems (lack of form/jail) behind him and it makes sense for Moyes to ease him in.

We did win the game so you could argue that Moyes was right to leave Fernandes on the bench for the time being.

Dutch, why could Fernandes not play in the middle along side Carsley with Osman still playing out wide? Neville and Carsley were terrible in the middle today and the game was crying out for someone to be able to control the ball in the middle of the pitch. Great to get the win, but that pitch should be ripped out immediately. Did they just host a horse race there or something? And again, Fernandes has not struggled for form, the manager would not play him because he doesn?t like him. There was no chance for him to show whether he was in form or not.

We played realy piss poor today but still won, it is a cliche but that is the sign of a good team.

Our defence did pretty well, but i felt at times there were too many gaps, we were too deep and the gap between our midfield and AJ was way too big.

I hope this was a one off performance beacuse we need to play way way better on Wednesday to have any chance.

I thought Ossie or Lescott were MOTM.

The pitch was cap, but it was the same for Wigan.

Role on Wednesday, lets hope we play out of our skins.

Ossie has deserved his shirt more than most this season, it?s up to Fernandes to get it off him, or one of the others.

Good win against a team who?ve looked like theyre turning in some good grafting wins lately!

Come on The Hammers and a nil nil on Monday will be alright by me!

Ossie is half the player that Fernandes is....quite literally!

Seriously though, I too was surprised at the lack of game time for him since Moyes has been on the OS saying that there is nothing wrong with Fernandes?s fitness. Ossie looked fucked towards the end too.

I thought our performance was very poor today, Wigan played the better football and with Neville in the middle of the park they saw more of the ball too. I think Fernandes would have allowed us to impose ourselves much more on what is a below-average league side.

That all said, you can?t argue with the result. Another win and an away one to boot, so all credit to Moyes and the lads. Roll on Wednesday.

Moyes clearly saw the awful pitch conditions, knew Wigan would put up a fight and decinded to use the graft and reliability of Neville & Carsley instead of taking a risk on Fernandes.

Last season Fernandes showed glimpses of ability but also disappeared in games at times.

This was not the sort of match for Fernandes it was a Carsley and Neville type match.

Fernandes hasn’t played much football over the last 8 months and Moyes has had chance to look at him all week in training so maybe we should just accept Moyes decision.

Moyes clearly decided it wasn’t the sort of match for a half fit flair player.

Or he was just showing faith in a player who?s bust his gut in the shirt.

Good on him!

1541: By the way, there’s a slight technical problem which means the Premier League table has not updated yet. But rest assured Everton fans, you are above Liverpool. We’re working on it.

Fernandes barely got a game in Spain and this pitch would have been a nightmare for him. He plays on the ground and we needed hoofers today. Just bang the ball and get out of there with 3 points. Which is what we did. Did Wigan really threaten after the OG? Bent shot over and Kilbane scuffed wide, just like they would have if they had been playing for us. So, that?s the turnaround in the fortunes of Everton, Kilbane and Bent are in the starting eleven, and it?s NOT OUR side anymore. Fourth for a bit, and let?s keep going to WEdnesday night!

Dutch, what's your problem with Fernandes? This crap about jail is tiresome. I've got mates that spent longer inside for getting drunk. If you're still pissed about him going to Spain that,s fair enough but cheap cracks are really below the standard of posts you normally submit.
