Fernandes

In a nutshell, not good enough. The lad has good vision but as I have said on this site when Manny was here last time, no stamina, no engine. Last night, he'd pass the ball then stayed were he was. When we broke and needed support on the edge of the box, he was still in our own half. The lad thinks he's better than he is. I watch Steven Pienaar and I see a skillfull player but also a player who will run his socks off for the team.

Its funny how football divides opinion - I thought exactly the opposite last night; he looked unfit to me and I believe he’s not played much recently. He appeared to track back quite alot when he lost the ball (which was quite often - see above) and worked hard for the team I thought.

Nevermind, I dont think we should slate any players really; Chelsea defended their lead brilliantly and after all, thats what they had to to do so fair play to them, and fair play to all our players for their hard work.

We’re still doing well and having a great season however you look at it.

Give the lad a chance, hes hardly played any football for 6 months and I thought he did ok for the first 60 mins, his passing is quick and he doesnt always go for the easy ones or pass straight to Arteta like some of our players do. People have been saying on here that we have no real centre midfielder, Carsley stays too far back and Cahill too far forward, I think Fernandes will become the perfect link between the two, but let the lad get a couple of games under his belt!

It looked to me last night that Moyes had told him to sit deep alongside Carsley. I thought he played well for the first half hour, he was constantly involved in keeping our passing going and won the ball back well when needed. Then passes started going amiss and lack of fitness was evident.

The fact is, he’s hardly played all season so was never going to get up and down the pitch for 90mins. Let’s judge him after 5 or 6 games.

So your writing him off after one game? Hope you remember this article in 1 years time.......

I thoght he was going to be the driving midfielder that we so badly need. What i,ve seen is someone who aint got the stamina for that position, not just last night but the time he was here before.

When has Manny or anyone claimed he is a driving midfielder???

He is a holding midfielder, more suited to the Carsley/Makalele role, he never has or probably never will be a box to box midfielder. His ability with the ball will take some pressure off Mikel & Peanuts but he is primarily a continental type defensive or holding midfielder.

C’mon eh? at least know a little bit about our players!!

I throught for the first half manny looked great. his passing is exceptional... the one in the first half - one touch 40 yard pass when Nuno was too slow to reach it... that was sheer class. He is young and hardly played. Yes he looked unfit in the 2nd half but most of the players did. Ii was massive game with a huge atmosphere, it drains the players emotionally as well as physically.
Last night we were unlucky. The first half we played well, and for the record 12 months ago people were complaining about the standard of football they were watching despite the fact we were winning. Now we are playing some excellent football (as we did in large patchs last night). We are pushing these so call top 4 teams hard in each game we play against them (the derby, utd, Arse and Chavski)

Sooner or later we will get it right, and I dont think that time is far away...

If anything I thought he worked harder in the Chelsea game than he did in any of his past games in which he was lazy. He was running back, winning the ball and giving it to another player. I think thats the most I?ve seen of his defensive game compared to his first spell in which we only really saw his attacking talents.

His passing was hit and miss but I would hardly say he was trying to be fancy. The only man trying to be fancy was Mikel Arteta. About 20 times in that game he had a chance to cross the ball yet dribbled and dribbled until Chelsea?s defense where back in position. No one has a go at King Mikel.

Fernandes will improve without a doubt. He was rusty at times yesterday but you could tell he has quality.

Why does everyone feel the need to compare him to Steven Pienaar. Every player is different. Pienaar has obviously grew up a workman like player whereas Manny hasn?t. He will need to adapt but he?s 21, unfit and in a new country. He has all the time in the world.

John, So we have Carsley and Fernandez in the holding position, wth Arteta and Osman on the flanks. So who does the Lampard/ Gerrard role? I,m confused.

Rubbish Colin, absolute rubbish.

He never went missing, was always looking for the ball and was trying to make things happen. He was off the pace second half but I don’t blame him for that. He’s 21 and it was his first game for a while in a frantic paced match.

I hope you come on here and apologise when you realise what a gem he is.

I certainly will. I'm not saying you all ball watch but when we have possession, look and see what other players are doing.

Is Manny a holding player or an attacking midfielder? Does anyone know?
Sorry but i dont,

Manny off the ball looks to come and get the ball. He is composed on the ball when he gets it and doesn’t panic. Too many times last night our players weren’t showing for the ball from the defenders and they ended up hoofing it up to Johnson. Fernandes was trying to take the ball from defenders and make us play last night except he was a bit rusty.

He is the midfielder who will collect the ball from the defence and make us play through midfield then pop up in attack and dare to shoot from outside the area or play a clever through ball. Our play sometimes is quite predictable and against the top sides we get found out. We play down the flanks and overlap the full backs then cross the ball in to Cahill floating in on the far post. The cross either finds Cahill or gets cut out and we win the corner. Fernandes gives us the option to play through the middle of the park and hopefully play it to Johnson’s feet for once.

Now I’m not saying you don’t watch the game but ...

Manny has class written all over him. And he’s only 21. He is different to Arteta and Peanut in that Arteta excels in the short passing dept, Peanut in the running with the ball and getting into the box.

Manny can hold the ball, sheild the ball, dictate the pace of play, dribble away in tight spaces, long range shooting, and excellent long range passing. He hits the ball very very straight, accurate and along the ground at high speeds. A lot of our players don’t have the skill or confidence to do that, they usually hoof the long pass, or curl it away from the opposition which ultimately slows the overall build-up. Manny’s passing is perfect for AJ to run on to or chase down the wings to create space. I think Manny will become world class in the central midfield role and we would be very lucky to see the best of him at Everton. As so many professional players say, form is temporary but class is permanent (or something along those lines). Benfica rates him as what 12m pounds? If the stars line up straight for the lad (injury free, head screwed properly) he will be better than Fabregas and Hargreaves, IMHO.

Colin, I think your letting the transfer fiasco cloud your judgement, I thought he did alright. But even if I didn?t I would never judge any player on one game and against one of the top three at that. If I'm ever in court, I hope you're not on the jury you would have me convicted before the charges were read out.

I'm not judging him on one game. He was here before when he scored that cracker against Man u. I think we all agree we need an attacking midfielder and what i,ve seen and john above has clarified that Manny is a holding midfielder, so who is going to feed the Yak and johno from the middle of midfield? We dont need two holding players. when was the last time someone scored or even had a crack at goal from the edge of the box? Carsley. we need a player who can get in that position more often.
