Glass still almost half-full

I realize I should be grateful that City and the RS also screwed up their opportunities to rack up vital points but somehow it only makes it worse. How is it that we shoot ourselves in the foot so often when two additional points would have meant so much? Where is the bite up front? There was some good football but we're toothless.
The problem is still the same as it was before we bought Beattie (and after) We have no opportunist goalscorer who can put away straightforward scoring chances. Johnson was virtually a winger tonight, Anichebe was anonymous, Vaughan probably should have been brought on much earlier.
We can guess Cahill and Yakubu would have made all the difference but perhaps not. We need a class striker and there wasn't one on the field tonight.

Couldn't get any sleep downunder, due to the high anticipation of assuming I'd watch a exciting high-scoring game this morning but I seem to found it easier to fall asleep during this boring lack-lusture match than before it. I recommend to anyone on sleeping tablets to give them a miss and try watch the Everton v Spurs replay tonight before you try go to bed, I'm sure you will fall asleep. Lucky other results went our way, it was the only ray of sunshine.

I noticed something today that I always realized but today it occurred to me how big a deal it was. In the last 20 minutes of the game when Tottenham were pressuring and we couldn't do anything; it boiled down to one main thing:? Tim Howard's long goal kicks to no-one. I know why Moyes in his defensive mind set has Howard doing this but it doesn't make sense.
Aside from our center backs and one forward today we had a TINY TEAM. I don't understand why at least half the time Howard doesn't pass it to a defender. I think this simple solution would do wonders. This is probably that little something we are missing because if you think about it all the "BIG" teams do this and it works pretty well.

I would have happily taken a scrappy 1-0 win from the Tottenham game with all the absentees. The chance that AJ had when played in by Manny was the chance to take 3 points and take advantage of Liverpool?s loss to West Ham. AJ had a great first touch to set himself up but the finish was really poor and there is no excuse for it. I would rather Vaughan take his place as we are unable to play to AJ?s strengths and his finishing at times leaves a lot to be desired.
Defensively we played well with Lescott and Jagielka having fantastic games. The only real chances for Spurs were from giveaways by Manny (twice) and Phil Neville respectively. None of the teams around us have taken advantage of our dropped points but I keep thinking of AJ?s one-on-one with the keeper as the moment of the game. He didn?t take it and now DM needs to look at giving Vaughan a start.

Is it just me or has Arteta lost the confidence to shoot. Last season he scored a left footed 30-yd cracker at Goodison ? who against escapes me. Tonight he was in the box 16 yds out just off centre and chose to chip... Bloody hell ? hit it!!

I find myself in the unique position of defending DM. I am usually very critical of all things Everton especially following a drab goaless home draw. But look at the bigger picture, we were missing 5 players tonight all of whom would have been definate starters. We simply don’t have the strength in depth to cover such losses. Our performances since Christmas have hardly set the pulse racing but nonetheless taking into account AFCN, injuries & suspensions we have actually climbed the table into 4th spot & opened up a 3 point lead over the RS. Not bad going under the circumstances.

Joey, we don’t have the players to play it our from the back. The last thing we want is Neville trying to pass an accurate ball into midfield. Captain Nev showed again today that he’s not good enough with that awful pass that almost gifted Spurs a goal. Hopefully the young lad, Gosling, will be ready sooner rather than later. On a more positive note, Lescott was a colossus at the back and Manny is slowly getting back to the form that we know he can produce. One more thing, is it just me or does Johnson seem like he’s always off balance. I think Moyes might have to teach him how to cross and throw him out on the wing. He is terrible with his back to goal and not consistant enough in the penalty area.

I reckon ’The Yak’ would’ve been the difference today as i believe he is that opportunist striker that you so long for.
Alas, it wasn’t to be.. it still would’ve been nice to press home a winner..

We do have an opportunist goalscorer. He has scored 12 goals already this season. When given a chance he usually scores. Unfortunately he is doing his thing in Ghana for Nigeria. In his absence Lescott and Johnson have kept up the scoring until tonight.
What really pisses me off is how negetive people are. Our only fit and available 12 players got on the pitch tonight (I’m including Vaughan) and we out played a team who many people believe are in a false position and are in great form at the moment. People say they were there for the taking...well maybe they were only there for the taking because we played so well.

Jay, I don’t think expressing frustration at not scoring at home against a team well below us in the table in a game we should clearly have won is being especially negative. What - you were pleased? We need to convert chances Arteta and Fernandes can create and it can’t all come down to Yakubu, who is inconsistent. There is a gaping void in front of goal and God knows AJ isn’t filling it.

Oh come on..Yakubu has been here since September, had no pre-season at Evertonand has scored 12 goals for Gods sake..Inconsistent? Are you sure? Its his style of play..He hangs around the box and scores goals..ala Ruud Van Nistlerooy.. I am convinced if Yak had played last night we would have scored..For one he is a master at the type of chance AJ squandered..As for the clamour for Vaughan and Anichebe..These guys will get better but at the moment they are both still raw with there main strength work rate which I wont complain about..Big Vic needs to work on his touch and control and so to does Vaughany..Two years down the line these guys will be alot more dangerous strikers but its asking alot for them to be Michael Owens straight away..I was a little surprised Moyes hasnt tried to get an experienced striker in on-loan while Yakubu is away especially after selling McFadden as put simply in all the matches Yakubu has been away with the exclusion of Wigan,we have been very blunt..Add Oldham to that category also when Moyes left Yakubu on the bench and went with Vaughan and AJ..Given the circumstances we had FIVE key players missing last night for one reason or another so I am going to say taking a point off a resurgent Spurs isnt so bad providing we beat Blackburn and make the most of how bad Liverpool are playing, otherwise we make look back in regret..

I couldnt go to the game last night, so I plugged in my earphones and listened to the game on the radio...While i watched the Utd/pompey game..
Now iI make no secret of the fact that I think moyes is doing a fantastic job..and it was a pleasure to watch just what can be done when you have a virtual bottemless pit of transfer funds ...after all Man Utd are " THE BIGGEST AND RICHEST CLUB IN THE WORLD" and please dont bother posting about the russians..thats personal wealth.
We have Arteta...a fantastic player around whom most of our good play revolves..many would agree, offensively, he is our best player..Utd have C. Ronaldo..probably..the 1st or 2nd best player in the world...up front Wayne Rooney..£25 mill, on the bench..Tevez..another£25 mill..defence..Rio Ferdinand £30 mill.. on the bench Owen Hargreaves £20 mill...micheal carrick £15 mill...Oh and Scholes and Giggs cost nothing..but they are not too bad either..
Now we have played this team of supermen twice this year..and went 85 mins in each game on level terms..not ,I might add by ,"parking the bus"
But a lot of contributors will tell you , as they already have, That Utd were" THERE FOR THE TAKING"..oh how I hate thta phrase..
Has anybody looked at the league table?
They are the biggest, richest, BEST team in England..they are top of the league and will win it...yet we have team that can actually go out and compete with them..
Is this luck..Dithering, cowardly, clueless Dave has raised all your expectations so much that you expect to beat them..even at old Trafford....
Every football pundit in the country raves about the job that Moyes is doing here..why?..because compared to around half of the league we are skint..He has to manage his resources as well as produce on the field..
So to last night...Another team "there for the taking...another team that has spent millions, another team that has finished above us for the last two years...
I feel my self saying, thank you very much for the 4 points...yes we wish we had your money..but Id rather have no cash and this manager,,because we are in a champions league place...The place only Spurs were meant to be capable of taking from the shite..and we are there on merit..we are were we deserve to be..
We had AVDM on the bench ffs...If anything RAMOS was probably saying"they are there for the taking"
I know we didnt play like Brazil..buts that is mainly cos we are not Brazil..
But we do the best with what we have..
put our squad ,with everybody fit, up against every other in the league.. penny for penny we wouldnt come near the top 10..
But every year that squad improves..every year it gets younger..more hungry..more technical ability...more attractive to investors..and more attractive to players that see champions league as an absolute minimum requirement when choosing where to play..
I dont for one instance think that DM is above criticism...but please put all the "clueless, " crap to bed..the league dont lie...
Do you really believe..He?s shit, but somehow he?s 4th,,?
Under Walter it was..Hes shit and he?s 15th or 16th or..staying in the league on the last day of the season...
Not any more.. COYB

Feel this is a bit harsh Peter. I really don’t think that the strikers are our problem. Certainly not where we need reinforcements through new personnel.
Our two best opportunistic strikers - Yakubu and Cahill - are two of the best in the league, and could have made all the difference if one of them had been on the pitch. On AJ, he does seem to be lacking a bit of confidence - but if he’d got the penalty he earned, we would all be singing a bit of a different tune. Vaughan I believe is maturing and will be the real deal. Anichebe I have more doubts about, but he will certainly be a valuable squad player.
The player I really wanted back on the pitch last night was Steven Pienaar. I think he would have created that little bit more for Vic or AJ to convert.

We got a point with half a team against a good in form side, Liverpool lost and man city drew against derby, thats right derby, surely it is them that shot themselves in the foot, not us. Also I thought AJ played well last night a glimpse that he can be a player if you play him with someone up front, I know he missed a bood chance but I put that down to shock he actually got a pass to feet in the box that put him in on goal. Fernandes is looking good.

Tony Part, I don’t want to sound like I’m slagging Yakubu particularly and I agree with almost everything else you say, but he has made 24 appearances in league and cup games and scored in eight of them. Not bad. Not great. We need someone more dependable than that and certainly more dependable than Johnson, who is admittedly a very different type of player, leading the attack. We are relying too much on goals from midfield and defence.

Peter..I see your point of getting someone more dependable and it would be great if we could go out and sign a Didier Drogba or someone like that but your looking at 25 million on one player and I dont think thats going to happen..Yakubu has a goals record which is second only to Thierry Henry over the last four seasons which says to me he is the best goalscorer we have at the club by a country mile..AJ scores goals but he is not the same type of striker as Yakubu and nor are Anichebe and Vaughan..Out of all our strikers Yakubu is the only one who could have scored a second half hat-trick (Fulham in December). I see your point but I also think we have to be realistic,we are not going to get a better goalscorer than Yak unless we make a Roy of the Rovers signing..
