Frustration and Andy Johnson

Comments (35)

The game against Tottenham last night represented a massive opportunity for Everton FC ? especially when looking at the other results after the game, with Liverpool and City slipping up. We were certainly down to our bare bones, with Shandy Andy, and even Da Silva (who's name was spelt wrong on the big screen at Goodison!) on the bench. But the team put out was certainly one that could, and should, have secured three points.

So how did we fail to score? No ideas in the final third, and a poor final ball. Arteta worked his socks off but was not up to his best; Fernandes too worked hard but just didn't have the concentration, giving the ball away all too often in silly areas. There were positives ? Lescott had a fantastic game, Jagielka cannot be faulted, and Carsley was excellent. Anichebe too put himself about and looked threatening. But for me the problem was Andy Johnson up front.

AJ was poor last night. His touch was not good enough; on a number of occasions you just wanted him to get it under control and turn, or play a pass out wide, but his touch let him down and Woodgate or Huddlestone were quick to dispossess him. He was weak, even his penalty shout was touch and go, he went down pretty easily in my opinion, which is not something I like to see (though not a patch on Chimbonda's act of agony earlier on!) His shooting was poor when he did have a chance ? the turn and half volley was top notch but always a bit speculative ? but it was the one-on-one that got me, where he put it straight at Cerny with the goal at his mercy. Would Torres have missed? Van Persie? Anelka? Rooney? Yakubu? No. AJ started so well, but has fallen well below expectations, at least for me. West Ham wanted him for 8-10 million last season? Let him go if anyone comes in with silly money like that ? use the proceeds for Manny and Pienaar, and look for young talent up front in the summer.

We have Anichebe, Vaughany and Yak and AJ is close to falling down that pecking order. He needs to step up, particularly on last nights evidence ? no matter how hard he works, he is a striker and needs to score goals to be regarded as worthy of a starting place.

I don't agree that we were out of ideas in the final third because it was a marked improvement in that regard on the Chelsea game. Also, probably a bit harsh on AJ there. Yes, there were times when his touch let him down but there were others where he was in true striker mode, taking the ball in stride and getting off an early strike. And while a world-class striker ? I think most would agree he's is not world class ? would probably have looked up and clipped the ball over the 'keeper, AJ tried to slot it under Cerny... and almost succeeded. The same way that had his shot through Chris Kirkland's legs at Wigan hit the 'keeper's heels and been blocked rather than slid straight through we'd be slating him, had his effort of last night gone in, it would surely have been the winner and we'd be singing his praises.

Lydon, you are right. Its a thin line between success and failure. Had Johno (I despise the term "AJ") scored, we’d be talking about a great defensive performance and Johno’s great predatory instincts and Fernandes’ vision.

I think this shows that we are really not far from being a top side now. Johno really needs a goal and then he’ll be flying again.

Johno’s low on confidence Amanda, that first yard is in the head and it will come back as soon as he gets one and then bangs in a few more.

2 things about the above post.

1st ... I thought AJ worked quite hard last night and yes should have just put his foot through the ball and scored. What worried me more was Anichebe’s display ! Poor first touch , no movement and no strength looked a lot like James Beattie towards the end !!

2nd..... Carsley was excellent ???? In what way ?? He was woeful as he normally is when up against anyone with an ounce of pace ! Yes he’s done ok at times this season and that goal against Birmingham was majestic, but for me its the single most obvious issue why we haven’t moved onto the next level. We need a midfield that can get about the pitch and compete and pass the ball as Manny does, not retreat 30 yards before making a challenge !

Have to agree with Louis,

I am not at all convinced by AJ, he has a great engine, pace and workrate but is misfiring at the moment and need to get to his best ASAP.

Agree partly with Louis and Steve. AJ (sorry Steve!) lacks the predatory instinct just at the monent. Essentially, needs to at be more confident and cocky to finish chances with aplomb. When he was at Palace in the prem he fired shots in from all over, but he now seems too tight...he needs to loosen up and start banding them in with confidence again. Vaughan has the instinct, give him a run from the start with Vic at Ewood. AJ can come on for one of them if they tire.

I actually thought that all things considered last nights game wasn’t too bad.........not brilliant and I tend to agree we did lose two points instead of gaining one point but considering the players we had available - not bad.
The line up on the bench suggested desperation (I’d love to have VDM’s job........doing nothing for quite a sum of money every week). And there is no doubt that it was there for us to win.....considering how well Spurs have played lately (and the number of goals they’ve been banging in) it was pleasantly surprising to know Howard could have had a nap for 90 minutes!!!
If only AJ had finished a little bit better.........famous last words and all that......had Yakubu been there we’d probably be talking about a fantastic win. Oh, well.

That said....I’ll say it again......when our team is at full strength we could be unbeatable.......I still think the UEFA Cup is ours and I firmly believe the ANC crap has stopped our momentum in it’s tracks......once the ANC lot are back.....UEFA Final here we come AND 4th spot in the Prem....and even better...no European soccer for The RS next season..........now that would just be the icing on the cake!!

Louis, I was at the game and your assesment of Johnson is harsh very harsh.

As usual there were too many ’hoofballs’ played to him from our defenders, and he probably won more headers than Victor did, alongside him.

One aspect of Johnson’s game is he never hides whether he is having a stinker or not.

I thought Anichibes performance last night was very poor, for me he is nothing like the player that started to emerge 12 months ago.

For a guy his size he showed little physical strength when playing against a couple of decent centrebacks and spent most of the game on his backside or moaning to the Ref.

As for Carsley having a blinder?

Sorry he was largely anonymous for most of the game and his passing was atrocious, I think we need to think of a replacement pretty soon.

With the side we had out and the options on the bench I will take 1 point as a positive. Spurs had good possession without threatening Howard too often. This was down to some excellent defending across the back four, particularly the centre backs.

Our possession wasn’t so good and the point was ground out with a few players below par. No Osman or Cahill as well as the guys we knew we would be without means we were missing half of the team who were doing so well.

Louis - all those strikers you named with the exception of Van Persie cost a hell of a lot more in one off or combined fees than Johnson did and if you wanted to buy VP now how much?

We paid over the odds for Johnson because of Simon Jordan wanting the best deal possible. Johnson tries hard but I would say he is lacking in both confidence and ability. Not a natural finisher, little composure, lacks instinct and his one true asset (pace) looks like its left him.

We would always get our money back and a bit more because a prem club will always take a chance on him.

Johnson will get his little run of goals but I dont see him being someone you can rely on like Yakubu - not as much work rate but plenty more craft and guile.

We didnt lose against a team very much on the up with most of their first choice available - take the positives.

This is completely over the top. Johnson’s been scoring pretty consistently, when he’s played, since the Newcastle game and when he hasn’t, it’s been largely due to a lack of service.
As for his chance last night, he didn’t do a lot wrong. It was a good save.
Would Torres have missed? Van Persie? Anelka? Rooney? Yakubu? Yes, probably.
I can think of sitters against Arsenal and ’Boro that Yak didn’t even get on target. I don’t watch the other players week in week out, but Torres against Newcastle? Rooney had a couple of one on ones at the weekend? Is VP ever fit? Anelka against us?
As far as I’m concerned AJ was a good buy at 8m and you’d be hard pressed to replace him for that amount.
We need to construct a system that allows him, Yak and Cahill, as an AM, to all play in the same side.

He had a one-on-one and missed, so what? I seen player’s like Giggs and Ronaldo miss open goals, all they needed to do was tap it in. Does that make them bad players? Bet you’d bite Ferguson’s hand off if he sold those two to us.

totally agree with AJ conclusion... thought it was spot on...AJ isnt the striker to fire us into the top four...he tries but he isnt good enough. Some mentioned on TW that AJ was like radzinski, and i can defo see the comparison. There isnt enough end product from AJ, works hard but not good enough for me. Like the lad but for the next step he isnt up to it. thats just my opinion...

Ludicrous gossip on the BBC transfer page:

1933: There are a lot of rumours flying around about the future of Everton striker Andrew Johnson - people have allegedly seen him massively getting involved with Bolton Wanderers. Can?t see it myself, but maybe one to watch out for.

Andy don’t think ferguson would but I’d hardly think AJ is that bad. Got to remember he can only do so much. Half the time we lump balls up to him and expect him to do something with it. His goal against Wigan was a striker’s goal. And I remember the goal he scored against Arsenal being special too, putting it in the one place he could only score from. He is more a player that needs through balls and yes it was a through ball that he missed his chance from but like I said Giggs and Ronaldo have missed open goals. And no he isn’t the man to take us to the next level but if we want to get there we’ll need to buy or find the Ronaldos, Fabregas’ and Drogbas I don’t see anyone out of the top three to have players like that and Berbatov isn’t saying much this season.

AJ good to have in our team,as strikers hunt in pairs and the moment YAK returns they will compliment each other as AJ will put in the work,YAK the goals. So give AJ a break.Remember stevie wonder has never played with Manny that combo could also turn into gold then we wont only create one or two chances a game.

Time will reveal all COYB.

I thought Barry Cass got it spot on.

Johnson was all over the show again chasing lost causes, I do have a concern about his one on ones but in the end it was a decent save, however, Victor was gash last night, I lost count how many times he miscontrolled the ball and as mentioned previously Johnson probably won more headers than him.

That was one of Carsleys worst games for a long time, he had been excellent this season but the last couple of games he has been off colour a bit, probably due to tiredness.

I heard the rumour regarding the two loans are Sidwell and Anthony Gardner. No idea how real it is though

Agree with those whose point, in summary, is Johnson played reasonably well but should have put his chances away. On the subject of big Vic - he went OK but Moyes really needs to get Duncan back over from Spain (or whereever he is) for a day to give Vic the one-on-one "We beat up centre backs, not the other way round" private lesson. Woodgate and his mate beat up on Vic all night and he took it like a pussy. Had they tried that stuff on big Dunc, they’d have been sooking off with cracked ribs in no time.

Have to agree with some of what Louis says in that I don’t think that Johnson will ever be a top notch striker. He’ll score his 10 a season but he’s not clinical enough to convince me that he can bag many more. His pace is an asset but even then he only ever runs in straight lines and, given that he rarely controls the ball properly, he often seems to run out of space and runs the ball into touch.

Given that McFadden has left, Anichebe can’t trap a bag of cement at the moment, always seems to get a head injury through not actually jumping for the ball and is best used as a bustling impact player, we’re actually very lightweight in the striking department.

Come back soon Yak and please give Vaughan a starting place to see how he fares on a regular basis.

If AJs asset is his speed/sprint. Then why oh why is he forced to run a marathon every game?
When he does finally get on goal he´s nackered!!!!<
br />He should also pass to better placed teammates more often. He deprived Beattie of several open goals and continues in the same vain.
IT´S A TEAM GAME FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on people wake up! Why are we settling for below par (performances and players)? Does NSNO mean anything to us anymore or do we just like to have it on our shirts? AJ has now confirmed he is a Championship player. He is annoying to watch by now. When he gets the ball it used to be ’Ohhh chuffing ell ere it comes lads!’ now it’s ’chuffing ell ... goalkick’ He does run, yes, but where are the fruits of labour? He used to create goals for others as well and looks like the spring has dried up. Spurs’ center halfs were flicking him around as if he was a gnat on a scone. and Carsley! He is NOT the answer. Fair play to him but he is a step above crap. Carsley has three phases of his game:
1. he plays the ball to the other team
2. he hoofs it
3. he blazes over the bar from every angle (sometimes even a back pass to our GK is a better option) for some of his pipe dream attempts

We always seem to pick up and rely on hopefulls and players past their ’sell by’ date.

Hey - since we just got Gardener does that mean that Lescott will now play up front?

Past their sell by date???

You have lost me there Ean, Carsley and Valente is our oldest players and the ones with the shortest contract, all the other players are in their 20’s.

re: TW

I wasn’t referring to players by only age but rather quality that they might have once had - sometimes even because of their ’big name’ - but now (or in seasons previous) that quality seems hard to find.

Just seen the highlights of the Spurs game, when AJ was one on one with the keeper he didn’t once look up to see where Cerny was he just blasted it towards goal! Not a good enough player for an aspiring top four side in my opinion. As regards Carsley I think he looks good in a 5 man midfield as his sole job is to protect the defence but in a 4-4-2 the centre mid has to add more, put his foot on the ball, pass etc, Cars just doesn’t have that quality. The same applies to Cahill too, he’s good at playing behind a striker and getting on the end of things but when he drops deeper his touch and passing often let him down.

You have to laugh don?t you or you would effing well cry.... what do I read on the web site - Gardener is injured and won?t be able to play for a few weeks. What?s the point of having him - we might as well tried to get someone else. I know he?s only meant as cover but we might need cover.

Looks as if Timmy might not be going kangaroo jumping as it stated his hamstring injury will have to be assessed before Blackburn game. Mind you if he can?t play for Australia he won?t be able to play for us - so again what?s the point.

After a shaky start Jagielka has settled in and has been excellent,he reads the game well and I like his no nonsense approach. {IF in doubt} he will get better and better as his confidence grows and should be Yobo's permanent partner with Lescott at left back were he can get forward and show his qualities.

I am not a big Carsley fan but he has been superb lately and has defused many dangerous attacks from our opponents, unlike Arteta who has looked lethargic and disinterested. I thought he stunk against Spurs and is having a poor season by his standards.

As for Johnson upfront, he looks out of his depth; awful first touch, poor movement off the ball, never anticipates a flick or pass, too weak in possession, and flaps at chances. I?d rather see Vaughan start ahead of him every game. We should have offloaded Johnson and got Defoe in.

Very unfair for some of you to single out Anichebe’s poor performance.

He was obviously told to be the target man of the pair and he shielded the ball well at times.

This was a totally new position for him and he will no doubt be better for it.

Shame on you all. The lad’s still learning his craft and much prefers to be running with defenders and not have is back constantly to them.

AJ was dreadful. I think he was part of a building process that helped get us into the top 10. If we have bigger ambitions then he needs replacing or he is just simply a squad player. He is not good enough to play at the level we want to now play at.

We missed Yakubu more than any other player missing against Spurs.
