3 Hours to go...

Will there be any more transfers!?

With Faddy and Stubbs leaving this Jan we are now looking rather threadbare... With only 3 centre backs its looking risky, the wings need more strength and generally we lack the numbers to cover potential injuries / suspensions.

Will DM bring anyone else in?

Skysports reporting that we are going to make 2 loan signings. No comformation as to who they are though. Van Buyten I think is likely!

BBC are saying that we are in talks with Riquelme and Ameobi. I question the Ameobi link as i don?t think we need any more strikers. THey also say that AJ is going to Bolton. LEts hope we get the ones in. I wouldn?t mind a decent right back though!!

I think its just Sky Sports trying to keep the viewers interested until midnight so they are coming up with made up stories about every club still looking to sign players right up until the last minute..We should by now know last minute deals are not Moyes style..Nothing will happen, given we have sold Stubbs and McFadden we should replace them but we wont..Nowt will happen
Terry Downes
5   Posted 31/01/2008 at 17:26:26

Well, another transfer window has come and gone and yet again no-one as been bought ? only Fernandes on loan. Surely Moyes and the Board can't honestly believe we don't need a couple of new faces to strengthen an already weaker squad now than what we started with. If ? and i say "if" ... it all starts to go wrong from now on we'll all know where it started; while others strenghtened we dithered?
Tony Part
6   Posted 31/01/2008 at 20:56:16

David- As soon as you mentioned AJ going to Bolton I knew it was not worth putting the BBC on for reliable info..
Dutch Schaffaer
7   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:02:07

How is the squad weaker? We sold McFadden and Stubbs but brought in Gosling and Fernandes.

Swapping an older player past his best like Stubbs and bringing in a young highly rated youngster like Gosling makes good business and surely Fernandes is a far better player then McFadden?

It makes me laugh when people claim that letting Stubbs move on is a mistake and we desperately need to replace him. Why do we desperately need to replace him? He hardly played anyway. We have three very good central defenders (Yobo, Lescott & Jagielka) and we now have Jack Rodwell to provide the back-up now that Stubbs has gone.

At the start of the month we had Stubbs/McFadden and now we have Gosling/Fernandes.

I would say that during this January transfer window Moyes has strengethen the squad.

Is Riquelme’s work permit still current?
Dan McKie
9   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:15:05

Riquelme again? Jeez, how many deadline days are we gonna hear about him signing? Dont know if he has the pace for the premier league, give him half hour on the ball and he will pick out a pass,otherwise...???
Eric Holland
10   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:17:30

Mcfadden for fernandes yes.
Stubbs for gosling I can’t see Moyes throwing Gosling in against the RS or manure etc, can you?
Dutch Schaffaer
11   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:22:13

At the start of January if you had offered the Everton fans the choice of:-

a) Stubbs & McFadden

OR

b) Gosling & Fernandes

I bet 95% of the fans would have chose option B. So why all the moaning, does anyone disagree that the squad has been improved?
Charlie Skinley
12   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:21:41

Dutch - I defend Moyes at all times, but for me the thing about letting Stubbs go now without a replacement is very simple... what if Jags or Lescott get injured in training or injured or suspended at Blackburn, we are fucked! We are not just sitting in mid table with nothing to play for but with a good chance of 4th! Plus with inuries an ANC and Cahill off with oz we are really week in midfield as well.
Dan McKie
13   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:33:27

Id like to see Moyes throw Gosling in and lets see him play, Spurs did with that kid Gunther who we were supposedly after, ok he was pretty shite but at least the fans got to see him!

14   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:31:24

Regarding loan players; can anyone clarify the rules on this? I have read posts stating clubs are allowed 2 only and we already have Fernandes, Pienaar and T G?

My opinion is that this is a good time to blood some of the younger players. I hate seeing a bench full of old faces and much prefer the young lads to have a real chance of developing by playing high pressure games. If the kids come through then great news. If they fail then move them on and bring the next generation through.
El-ray Jackson
15   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:37:49

Sky are reporting that there is some movement going on at Everton. Yeah right! Its probably Moyes just walking around!
Charlie Skinley
16   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:36:46

Dan, I’m sorry m8 but totally disagree. Now is not the time for the kids being thrown in for us to see. Now is the time we need good experienced players in the squad. Yes Jags and Lescott are playing well, but its if they get injured or suspended you need cover when you are trying to break into 4th place.

p.s. this is not an anti Moyes rant cos I am one of his biggest fans.... but I am just a bit concerned with the lack of cover.
Dutch Schaffaer
17   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:29:36

The ANC will be over soon and Yobo will return, then we will have a problem because Jagielka (who has really grown over the last few weeks) will possibly find himself on the bench.

Moyes biggest problem will be how does he fit three excellent central defenders (Yobo, Lescott & Jagielka) into the two positions, who gets left out?

And if Jagielka or Lescott (who hasn’t missed a game in two years) gets injured before Yobo returns, there are still options:-

Jack Rodwell - possibly Everton’s most highly regarded youngster since Wayne Rooney. Plays for England U18’s even though he’s only 16. Some would argue that Moyes should be playing him already.

Phil Neville - Everton’s Mr Versatile never lets us down and could no doubt do a decent job in central defence.

John Irving - Reserve team Captain and player of the year. Irving can play at centre back and having turned 18 recently he’s probably due a debut.

Nuno Valente - If push came to shove then an experienced player like Nuno Valente could do a job even if its not his natural position.

We may miss Stubb’s experience but its not as desperate a situation as some claim.

18   Posted 31/01/2008 at 21:44:12

I agree and disagree with you Charlie. Yes we do need experienced cover but where is that going to come from and at what price. our young lads showed against AZ that they can handle the bigger games and with JP Kissock waiting in the wings i don’t think we need to panic I along with everyone else would liked to have seen a big name come in but we are EVERTON and we will be in forth place in may and i hope in the UEFA cup final. Lets get behind Moyes and the players and move on together.

I think the match last night and to some extent this weekend’s match at Blackburn are to be our lowest points of the season in terms of squad availability. A draw or better at Blackburn would be a great result but i think after this we’ll have sufficient players.

Then, securing Pienaar and Fernandes in summer plus a defensive addition would suit me.

Sky just confirmed RUMOUR that Anthony Gardner in and Da Silva out likely to happen and be only EFC deals.

Charlie if Moyes wasn’t so cautious and we played more attacking football all of the time we don’t need more defenders. HA HA
Mark Pendleton
30   Posted 31/01/2008 at 22:02:20

It’s younger cover and perhaps the sort of move the lad needs to get his career up and running. If Nuno is out and Baines needs an op then we have to move Joleon to let back and need another centre half. He’s been unlucky with injuries in the past.

It’s not the most exciting move in the world but in our halcyon days in the 80’s we had numerous similar players in and around the first team squad to support it.

46   Posted 31/01/2008 at 22:10:52

Moyes cannot win. He gets slagged off for letting Stubbs leave without cover even though its now revealed he had cover lined up all along.

Now that we have cover in Gardner, Moyes is slagged off because the player is not good enough. And we haven’t even watched him kick a ball yet.

Stubbs was 37 and past his best. Gardner is a decade younger and at 6ft 5" has some much needed height. He’s also played for England (something Stubbs never acheived in his career). Give the guy a chance.

Its unlikely he’ll see much football anyway because he’ll be behind Yobo, Lescott and Jagielka. Surely Gardner is good enough to sit on our bench?

Ive seen a few things like moyes may have to get someone in the last minute etc because of stubbs leaving.. However Stubbs was in the village hotel whiston on monday with an agent (wudnt hav thought at that time he was leaving) which means moyes would have known 3 and a half days ago something was happening, with around 2 hours left its probably safe to say he isnt interested in gettin any one n as hes had days to line someone up.

Do you know how long Spurs have been trying to offload this crap idiot. My brother & his mates are Spurs fans & they are laughing their arses off.

I would rather we had loaned Bramble!

Gardner is THE worst CD in the Premiership, prone to schoolboy errors, cannot header (although he is 6’5) & just might be the poison pill that that knocks us out of the top 6!

Spurs have been trying to offload this wet packet of shite to the Championship!

If you don’t believe me.. go to the Spurs chat forum and in between their laughter, read the comments.

Moyes... I love what you have done, but Gardner... you mug!
Mark Pendleton
62   Posted 31/01/2008 at 22:41:38

I think the move for de Silva went through pretty much out of goodwill in the end after the move took so long in the first place. It’s not like it really cost us much really though. Good luck to him!

Oh and Jason, Spurs fans will say those things about a player leaving. Borrusia Dortmund fans seemingly wanted rid of Pienaar. Need i say more?
Ray Robinson
63   Posted 31/01/2008 at 22:42:15

Jason, not denying that Gardner may not be up to much (although I can’t say) but he can’t be worse than the 2 that play for Derby. Claude Davies and Darren Moore - now there’s a pair of useless centre-backs!
Gavin Ramejkis
64   Posted 31/01/2008 at 22:42:01

Jason B you need to chill out, Gardner is cover only and what would you rather have cover or nothing but kids or players out of position?
Tony Williams
65   Posted 31/01/2008 at 22:41:40

Jason are you having a laugh or what? he is the fourth choice centre half, there only for emergencies, that is it. He is replacing a fella a decade older than him and who hasn’t played in the league for months.

Yobo is back in a week or two so how the fook is signing an emergency defender going to knock us down below 6th place?
Dutch Schaffaer
66   Posted 31/01/2008 at 22:41:27

Jason Broome - Gardner is going to sit on the bench for his loan spell. No way is he going to replace Yobo, Lescott or Jagielka.

When Stubbs left Moyes needed a back-up central defender and Gardner should be good enough for that role. Surely Gardner is good enough to sit on the bench in place of a 37-year-old?

Pretty soon Yobo will return and then Jagielka can sit on the bench while Gardner goes into the reserves.

Gardner is just an insurance policy incase of an emergency. I doubt he’ll ever play for Everton.
Steve Templeton

Moyes the window maestro. Da Silva and Stubbs out, Fernandez and Gardener in. Davey boy, you are showing signs of real class. Don't get me wrong, I love Stubbsy and wish him well, but Gardener is 10 years younger and 6ft 4ins. Remember seeing him play at Goodison a year or so ago and thinking we are never going to get past this guy even if we play till the lights go out. He has been injury prone, but can't believe DM has signed him if this is still a problem. Da Silva out, Manny in. No comment needed.

McFadden gone. Pienaar injured. Gravesen injured. Osman injured. Cahill injured and expected for international duty with the Socceroos... I think if Moyes were the "window maestro" he’d have made sure that we had at least one more top class option in midfield before the deadline.

Maybe he didn’t have the cash but I still think we’re worryingly short in the area of the pitch that matters. Just pray no one else gets injured or suspended in midfield...

Steve Behan, you hit the nail on the head, not much to read into or understand. He will be a cover centre half and if he is any good then maybe he will be worth signing.

If not , then at least we have another body - 2 of our subs from Weds have now moved on so we need any players we can get! We got Gardner, who is good cover, and as much as I love Stubbsy, I believe Gardner is better cover.

Loan deals are made for the reason we signed Gardner. We have a small squad. For now we need the cover. If between now and the summer Gardner proves himself, both in terms of talent and fitness, we sign him and he?s already bedded in. Both Pienaar and Graveson have proved this over the season so far.

But, this lad is Spurs’ Hibbert (who I think is a solid defender ) who get’s slated everytime he plays, because, and to quote a spurs fan I bevvy with now and again down here " he is a fucking yard dog ". I had to laugh when I heard he had come in on loan, because I can picture the lads face next time I see him, and the words, youv’e signed a fucking yard dog.

Lyndon, Moyes has done pretty much what he said at the start of the transfer window and what he does pretty much EVERY January transfer window... keeps his hands in his pockets.

People call that ’Dithering’. I think the man has nerves of steel, not to flinch, not to panic, and buy in overpriced players at this time of the season.

McFadden gone? Plenty of cover in the forwards who he was largely behind in the pecking order anyway. Pienaar injured? Only a knock picked up in training, according to all accounts - he was on the bench against Senegal tonight. Gravesen injured? Hasn’t he been all season, or just peripheral anyway? Osman injured? He’s been missing for more than a month, and we’ve coped all right. Granted, his return to full fitness will be welcome. Cahill injured? (maybe suspended, and only for the Spurs game) but off on on international duty as is his and the Socceroos right.

I think Moyes is spot on NOT to make unnecessary signings as a contingency for the African Nations tournament... another week and that will be done and dusted and the squad will be back to full strength... and we’ll still be in fourth, Inshallah.

I believe that Johann Vogel is a free agent and therefore could be signed outside the transfer window?

I reckon Moyes only want Sidwell so he will no longer be a minority Ginger!

We have 3 baldies
2 Corn rows
Few dodgy hairbanders
Lots of crew cuts
But no ginge!

I am just thinking of a well balanced squad photo!

Kinda floppy dark blonde. Not that I memorise footballers’ hairstyles or anything.

I have been reluctantly watching this kid play for the last three years (brothers & mates are Spurs fans? what can I say?). He is crap.

Whether or not he will warm our bench, be an insurance policy, play for the reserves or become Arteta?s FLUFFER he will still be crap.

I love Moyes. I think nobody could have done what he has done (and many have tried) but on ?lead-foot?? he got it wrong. I hope I never see him play for us EVER.

Brace yourself. If you think Hibbert gets a raw deal?. Watch this space!

Jason, the thing is that it is very unlikely he will ever play for us, the same went with Stubbs, he will only come in if their is an injury crisis or a red card disaster.

Me mate’s a Spurs fan and thinks Gardner is good player. Their manager’s Spanish so probably Gardner’s too tall for their type of football. Anyway the conversation quickly dissolved into thank fuck Defoe left for Pompey, the guy had no vision just shoots from impossible angles...

Doubt Gardner would get a game for us anyway.

Gardner is cup tied for the Uefa Cup, having already played for Spurs. No wonder the official site was offering the chance for a fan to sit on the bench for the SK Brann game, they will probably have to make up one of the 7 substitutes!

We now have 4 loan players. Gravesen and Gardner are just squad fillers and won’t stay past the summer. Fernandes will probably prove too expensive to sign. Hopefully the Pienaar deal will go through without any hitches. That would leave us 3 bodies down straight away. Should be an interesting summer for the blues fans. Lets hope that the lure of Champions League football will be on offer so BK can loosen those purse strings!

Nick you’re my hero ; )

Gardner on loan is a good signing I reckon - DM knows how to mould defenders into top class players; just look at Lescott and to a degree Jagielka. We need 4 centre halves and with Yobo back in the not too distant future (heres hoping Nigeria lose at the weekend!) we’ll have decent cover at the back in all positions. Gardner cant play in Europe so he’ll fill in nicely when/if we come back from Europe with tired players.

IMHO I reckon DM is very much copying Alex Fergusons ideas at Utd - the squad he’s building shows lots of similarities with Utd’s - the policy is the same even if the money isn’t and therefore perhaps the quality isn’t either, but the design is the same and fair play to him.

How’s our squad the same as united’s? Where’s our Ronaldo, Rooney, Gigs or Scholes?

You guys get me!! So Stubbs and McFadden have gone. All a great majority of you ever did was moan that Stubbs can?t cut it now because he is too slow and McFadden got booed constantly and was slagged off as being useless. Sometimes think Everton can?t win.

Don?t talk daft Patty, I saw Everton win but weeks ago, against Wigan.

Antony Gardner is not a bad centre half I can recall him having some good games against us and he had big Dunc in his pocket one night.
He needs confidence have a run injury free and a change of club and environment.
Stubbs is 36 and past it.
Da Silva never played except for a couple of minutes so obviously Moyes thinks he is not good enough.
McFadden is an enigma and from what I have seen is going to frustrate Brummie fans too.
We do need at least 2 more midfielders as we are too lightweight both in numbers and in player stature in that dept.
I am disappointed we couldn?t get hold of at least one.

well its come and gone and for everyone moaning about moyes not bringing in centre half cover between 11 and 12 last night.....Patience....Gardener on loan...Great signing, massive presence and when fit which he is at the moment he is a player. In moyes we trust.

Gosling, Fernandes, Gardener in. McFadden, De Silva, Stubbs out. I’ll take that.

We appear to have at least 2 for every position except in Midfield

1) Four goalies
2) Four fullbacks
3) Four Centre backs
4) Four strikers
5) Midfield not including Neville, Jagielka or Baines
Arteta
Cahill
Osman
Pienaar
Fernandes
Gravesen
Carsley
Which leaves only 7 midfielders and in Gravesen we don?t really have one so in reality we have 6 plus him and the defenders mentioned above who are makeshift midfielders.
To challenge for a top 4 place we really needed to bring in a quality midfielder whether it be Sidwell, Downing, Arshavin or whoever.

I’m still laughing over Man City and Portsmouth. I really do hope they cocked that deal up. Portsmouth will then have a player who they rejected, who will surely damage their team spirit, as well as being much further into debt £7m apparently and the interest may prevent them from doing anything in the summer in the market.

As for City, they’ve now got Vassell, Mpenza, some Ecuadorian, and Mancini’s kid to choose from up front. That’s them gone fromt he race for fourth!

They have also got young Daniel Sturridge Steve and he looks shit hot.

They will drop away though as they are not good enough.

Lets not worry about other teams and just focus on the blue boys getting the maximum from each game possible and bagging Champions League place for next season. COYB!

Steve Ferns - I didnt say our squad was THE SAME as Utd’s, I said it was being built in a similar manner. Go to the Guardian website and read the article from David Moyes - even he mentions the model put in place by Utd & Arsenal.

You’ve missed my point entirely.
