Intertoto

Comments (15)

I have just read that Man City have applied for Intertot cup. Does anyone know if we applied? I read Ericsson said that 'hopefully they wont need it, but it is an insurance policy...'

So:
a) have we applied
b) if we do hold on to 4th, would that be detremental to have enetered?
c) if we haven't and you have the choice of playing or not if you do end up in a good final position in the league, why the hell didn't we!?

Anyone clued up?

As it only appears to be one round of games played these days, I don’t see the harm in entering. Although ideally we should be confident enough to say we don’t need it!

Yes, if you do end up finishing in europe through the league you will not be entered into the inter toto. hope that clears things up for you Viv Sharma.

I’d be inclined to say WE don’t need the Intertoto but a certain team not too far away might need it.

I think its a good move by Moyes to turn the heat on the players to perform and it also shows that his ambition moved from Intertoto/Uefa Cup to CL

Long may it continue

The BBC keep saying that 5th and 6th place will be going into the UEFA cup. In recent years it has only be 5th place unless (as happens every year) a CL team wins one of the cups in which case that spot goes to 6th place. Anyway what I am wondering is if the BBC are assuming a big 4 team wins a cup in which case 6th will be good enough for the UEFA or have they increased our allocation to 4 berths in that competition ?

6th/7th will become UEFA Cup spots providing that the FA Cup Final is contested by two sides already qualified for a European competitions (CL or UEFA Cup) and that Chelsea win the Carling Cup (only League Cup winners qualify for Europe and Spurs won’t finish high enough in the league).

Always a confusing topic, as I heard on the telecast of our match the other night that Spurs are already in Europe next year practically because they are the other finalist in the League Cup and Chelsea will already have qualified for Europe by virtue of their position but I didnt think that was correct! I will have to research this fully.

Hope I can clear up the Europe qualification for you:

1st to 3rd place is definite qualification for Champions League

4th is qualification for Champions League provided a team outside the top 4 does not win the CL (i.e. if Liverpool finish 5th but win the CL then they would qualify and 4th place would play in Uefa Cup - they changed the rules after last time)

5th place is definite qualification for Uefa Cup

6th place is qualification for Uefa Cup if Chelsea win the League Cup. If Tottenham win the League Cup then 6th place will only be good enough if both FA Cup finalists are in the top 5 of the league.

7th place can only qualify for Uefa Cup if Chelsea wins the League Cup and both FA Cup finalists are in the top 6 of the league.

For Intertoto Cup qualification, teams who are interested must inform the FA that they are interested in advance (I think the deadline is end of Feb). At the end of the season the Intertoto place will be awarded to the team on that list who finished highest in the league but has not yet qualified for Europe by any of the other methods mentioned above.

If you put your name on the Intertoto list but qualify for Europe by other means then there is no penalty to the club. The team in the Intertoto club will play one two-legged Intertoto match. If they win that, they go into the Uefa Cup 2nd qualifying round, then after that Uefa Cup Round 1 where the other teams start from. So the Intertoto team has to play 4 matches to catch up with the direct Uefa Cup qualifiers.

Of course we will put our name on the list, it would surely be a sackable offence to not do so. Our European exploits this year are all down to qualification through the intertoto and as they say "aint dun me no arm"

Is there still a place in the UEFA Cup for the winners of the fair play league, I believe we are top in that at the moment.

Paul, that was my feeling too, but as far as I am aware (and should have pointed out above) the deadline to enter was Jan 25th!. Thats why I ask coz I haven’t heard "Moyes enterers intertoto" on the OS.
And as for turning the heat up on the players, thats a risky game don’t you think!?
I’d rather be pesimistic/safe than no Europe atall next year!

That’s not right Paul, we didn’t qualify through the Intertoto this year, apart from anything else we didn’t play in it. We achieved direct qualification for the UEFA Cup through finishing 6th in the Premiership.

Ususally a list is in the press of teams interested in the intertotto but weather the team in 7th (or the finishing place for intertotto) is on that list or not, they always seem to get in, so I think you can just assume that whoever finishes a position below the last uefa cup spot, will be the team who goes in.

Actually it didn’t happen like that last year Craig.

Last season Bolton finished 7th and were the last team to qualify for the Uefa Cup (becuase both domestic cups had been won by higher placed teams).

Reading finished 8th but had not applied for Intertoto and Portsmouth finished 9th but had not applied for Intertoto.

So the Intertoto place went to Blackburn who finished 10th because they were the highest placed team who had applied to participate.

FFS thanks Martin I’m shitting myself thanks to you lol, I give odds of about 99-1 on for the RS winning the CL just to piss us off! You never know if they don’t win it and finish 5th they could change the CL allocation to 5 until RS finish in the top 4 again, sounds farfetched but I wouldn’t be that surprised
