Is it the end for the Yak?
Comments (77)
It didn't take Yakubu long to revert to type, did it? A player renowned for wanting a move every twelve months or so — and well versed in getting one — goes AWOL virtually the first time he's let out on his own.
Those of us who study these things always thought he would be doing a Lineker on us and refrained from heaping praise when his goal tally fell just below the £1Million apiece mark a short while ago.
With his next club no doubt already lined up, I guess we can now look forward to the "second half syndrome" that another correspondent referred to yesterday. Sad that such a talent is such a short-sighted, easily misled individual but there's plenty of his kind in this sick old game these days! I wonder who is the next one we'll attract?

There has to be more to this, let’s not start putting two and two together, just yet.

How do we know that it’s not just the Daily Mail talking bollocks? We all know most tabloids like to, for lack of a better phrase, "Chat shit" if they think it could be worth a few column inches, especially, in the Mail’s case, if it serves to further deteriorate the image of Those ’Orrible Foreigners.

It would be OK to get rid of an average player right away, but with a player who brings so much to the team you might need to excuse them to an extent.
An example is the way Alex Ferguson dealt with Eric Cantona. I’m not comparing the two players (Cantona and Yakubu) by any means, but Ferguson would never have excused the attack on the fan from, say, Brian McClair. He stood by Cantona because his talent made it worth it.
This sort of attitude does not sit well with me but the reality is that we need Yakubu’s goals.

I think he learnt this after the infamous player fall out of a few years ago. Moyes now seems to have learned how to deal with some of the fragile big name stars who cannot respond to a high level of discipline. It is crucial that he can deal with these type of players as the better we get the more these skills will be called into question.

"Missing Yakubu set for high jump at Goodison now faces deportation as immigrant work who’s come over here and taken our jobs and is probably a thieving terrorist and a single mother too, well you can’t trust em can you, they’re not really one of us middle class white bigots who went to a good school and live in the home counties"
Quite frankly I wouldn’t believe a word the Daily Mail prints it’s deplorable, blinkered facist rubbish that isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on (ahem, think I’ve made the point there)

You really are a glass half empty man, I would hate to be one of your kids or your poor suffering wife.
The man (Yakubu) is reported; by a less than reputable newspaper to have stayed in Africa a little while longer than expected and you have him leaving the club as a half a season mercenary. How can you accuse this guy of already having another club lined up when you arguably have no other information at your disposal other than the Daily Mail
Rob Paterson has hit the nail on the head by saying please do not stand for jury duty
’Hang em all and let god sort it out’
18 Posted 08/02/2008 at 03:37:27
If he was told to report back to training on the wednesday, and hasn’t, then Moyes will deal with him accordingly.
However, DM will take into account Yakubu’s importance coming into the home stretch of the season, & hopefully there’s nothing more to it!
19 Posted 08/02/2008 at 06:23:46
It says on toffeeweb that he will be fined 80k (2 weeks wages). I reckon if he keeps us in the top 4 we give him a 80k raise!

Is there a vast anti Everton conspiracy among the print media?
I thought it best to go to the club

That august mouthpiece does not give it a mention, nary a whisper or a peep. Er’ thats alright then, it is isn’t it?

It’s good to know that you have taken the opportunity to try and find Yakubu guilty of an offence that has not been widely reported.
I also think what was reported is not what you have found him guilty of. It appears that Yakubu travelled via a different route than SOME of the Nigeria players but some of his team-mates were with him - so he hasn’t gone missing at all.
Shame on you.

It seems that for news of genuine Everton concern. I would be better served by the gutter press.
31 Posted 08/02/2008 at 09:57:49
As has been mentioned untill something is officially released on the site or by Moyes in his press conference lets not all jump to conclusions. At this stage it could well be the case that he wanted a day or 2 to see his family. Makes sense if a lot of them are stilll over there. As for not reporting it to Moyes, I’m sure Yobo may have told Moyes what was going on. Personally if he is back and according to ssnews and radio merseyside he is, I can not see him not playing on sat, especially if he has had a says training under him. Footballers are human as well you know, I’m sure that many will have sympathy with Yakubu if he has only missed a flight to see family. With all the travelling that the top players do with Intl and European games these days even the local based players don’t get to spend as much time with family as they would like.

As for Yakubu, I’ve kept his quotes on leaving Boro in mind ever since. "I left Middlesbrough because they’re not in Europe - at the moment Everton are." It was his use of "at the moment" that really grated.Curiously, though, we are in Europe and doing rather well, so the lad should be happy. But there’s always goalposts to move, I suppose.
Also, I’ve got a really high regard for Steve Gibson: the truest of chairmen in the Prem in my opinion (and the only one to have had the guts not to have been intimidated by the RS i.e. concerning the Ziege transfer). When the likes of Gibson, a man not easily riled, starts publicly slating a player i.e. Yakubu - then it’s worth bearing in mind. But that’s just my view.
I’m still not convinced that Yakubu was Moyes’ man and it wasn’t just the likes of Guillem Balague stating that as fact which makes me think that. I’m sure we would have heard a hint from Moyes during the previous windows and indeed during the early summer that Yakubu was a player he fancied. Instead, his name - and the funds it seems - came from nowhere with just two weeks of the window left.
Was I the only one who was slightly disconcerted at Yakubu’s far too lengthy and far too cozy chat with Avram Grant (a man who he has worked with at Pompey - who has gone on record as saying he rates highly)?
Yeah, it could have been old mates meeting up...
37 Posted 08/02/2008 at 10:46:19
38 Posted 08/02/2008 at 11:08:55
Also Alonso and Arteta are best mates, neighbours and talk to each other a lot. Could be that Alonso is on his way here...lol
39 Posted 08/02/2008 at 11:07:12
I have never known anyone read quite so much hypothesis into such a non-story.
By all acounts Yak was back at Goodison on Thursday, having gone to Nigeria first with most of the squad (only 6 including Joey came straight back).
Then - when he talks to Avram Grant - who he has known for many years, (Yak played for himin Israel too) you get suspicious that he’s moving to chelsea). Have you ever watched Phil Neville or Mikel Arteta, they are always talking to opposition players & staff. When you have been around a bit as a player, you have alot of friends in the game, just cos they are on the opposite team, doesn;t mean you can’t talk to them OR you are automatically signing for them next week!

41 Posted 08/02/2008 at 11:18:51
joey was back in training Wednesday-perhaps the yak as other people on this site have said went to see family, nothing wrong with that for a day or so.
All these conspiracies-(e.g) the yak talking to Avram- what would Chelski do with the Yak ???
42 Posted 08/02/2008 at 12:24:16
43 Posted 08/02/2008 at 12:30:39
44 Posted 08/02/2008 at 12:15:29
First para is about Yobo. No probs, I assume.
Second para is when I started Yakking and that whole paragraph (regarding his Boro departure quote) recounts on-the-record facts. Not conspiracy.
The next paragraph (about Ste Gibson) also relates fact. Not conspiracy. For Gibson did indeed say that Boro were well rid.
The next para recounts what Balague said. Not me. I do, though, still have my doubts that Yakubu was a first choice for Moyes. That’s my opinion but it’s hardly a conspiratorial one.
The last para concerning Avram Grant (apologies, I thought Yakubu knew Grant at Pompey - but it was in fact Israel, my mistake) was just an observation of mine (and yes, I do know that people in football talk to other people in football).
The common point I was making - which I thought was obvious - throughout all the Yakubu paragraphs (or should that be "paro-graphs"?) is that the lad has a very suspect attitude. He does.
Nowhere did I say that Yakubu was on his was to Chelsea (although it may have been interesting to see if Grant had moved for Yakubu instead of Anelka in that window - perhaps if Nigeria had failed to qualify for the ACN?).
And whilst of course I know that Alonso and Arteta must gab over the pagoda, I was making the point that (knowing Yakubu’s MO) it left me slightly disconcerted seeing him so pally and laughing with Grant, especially in contrast to all the other players who trudged off at the Bridge completely disconsolate at Lescott’s OG just two minutes earlier. Yakubu was laughing and joking as though we’d won!
So, I hardly created a load of hypothesis around such "non-story" as Chris says. Nor have I delved into conspiracies. Just observations.
I merely drew an attitude comparison between a player like Yobo and one like Yakubu. They’re worlds apart (well between Monday and yesterday they were certainly continents apart!).
Anyway, if this is such a "non-story" (player flagrantly abusing club rules, showing lack of respect to fans and team-mates alike, with a probable fine and sanction to follow) then I’d hate to see what a "real-story" is.

He’s quick to spout shit about only wanting to play for ambitious clubs - what ambition has he shown in the last few days? He obviously prefers to lounge about at home then prepare for a massive game for the club that pays his wages. And before anyone goes on about him being entitled to see his family - he can... everyday for 2 months in the summer.
55 Posted 08/02/2008 at 13:52:19

If he IS though, then there does have to be some consequences. At my work, we’ve had a few fuckwits on the nightshift not bother to show up or even tell us that they weren’t coming. {One particular wanker got his mate to call in for him. "Mark won’t be in" "Why not?" "He’s too drunk to work"}. What happened to them? A "stern talk" and nonpayment for the days missed. Thats it. The rest of us divvies who do the right thing are absolutely fucked off with it - and thats what Moyes has to be careful of.
If he has gone AWOl, of course.
61 Posted 08/02/2008 at 14:11:28
We need his goals..........put Yakubu in the side tomorrow.
Tiny Tim only got back this morning (Friday) and we need him in tandem with the Yak against Reading.
Why does it always have to be such a drama ?
We need goals.......Yakubu was bought to score them.....he does.
Welcome back , big man and good luck tomorrow !

In a difficult week with players away on International duty Moyes has to prepare the squad.
Yak was supposed to report for training on Wednesday and didnt.
Although we will miss his goal threat and link up play it is more important to keep team discipline and respect.
He needs to eat humble pie something he apparently is not good at.
THERE ARE NO EXCUSES for failure.

68 Posted 08/02/2008 at 15:10:19
To rejoice in being proved right on the shortcomings of an Everton player is even more shameful than your first posting.
what ever happened to getting behind the team instead of snivelling snipes designed to cause unrest?
Obviously your own agenda is more important than the welfare of Everton.
69 Posted 08/02/2008 at 15:17:14
I do not accept blindly that he was ’missing’ for two days, but let’s see things into perspective. You read it all the time about South-American and African players returning late. They only get to spend time with their families in the summer, I can see that seize a chance like this to grab a day or two with their beloved ones. I don’t agree with it, it needs to be punished, but I can understand the feelings. I’d rather have this than a certain barcodes midfielder who keeps getting arrested for his behaviour.
70 Posted 08/02/2008 at 15:22:46
Would not most of us show a little sign of responsibility in return for the obscene wages the Yak and his ilk receive?
71 Posted 08/02/2008 at 15:23:23
The other factor to consider is that when english players go off on international duty somewhere and there is a chance to get out and raise hell they’ll do it (although Capello might put a stop to that!)
Now imagine that you earn £50,000 a week and you go back to a neighbouring country to your home to play a tournament and get knocked out. The next day you are an hour or two flight away from home, and the closest you’re gonna be for some time. The pressure on you to go over and splash some cash and remember everyone who helped you get to where you got would be immense. Now that’s not to say that you shouldn’t put your professional concerns first and be loyal to your club. But loyalties can conflict and you start to get pulled about all over the place. I reckon he hsa gone for an extra day and thought ’feck it, I’ll get bollocked but I can afford the fine and its the last chance I’ll get before summer’. Not good, but if he gets his head down after this it’ll be fine. Moyes needs to bollock him and then we can all forget about it.
72 Posted 08/02/2008 at 15:33:32
73 Posted 08/02/2008 at 15:17:29
Now, while I understand his motives, surely the best thing for him to do would have been to ask Moysey for permission. The way I see it at this point in the season it would have done no halm him flying back yesterday and joining up today ready to be included in the squad tomorrow (lets face it, the way we have been playing at the moment I would guess he would only have been on the bench anyway). The same goes for Joey - if they wanted to visit family then fine.
These guys are overpaid in my opinion but is that their fault - no it is not. They are just the same as you or I and if I had family living far from me and my work took me closer to them I would expect to get some time off to visit providing it did not affect my work.

74 Posted 08/02/2008 at 15:41:16
All Davey said was that when Yak came in he told him he wasn’t in the squad for the game.
Surely this was always likely to be the case as he played on Tuesday, and hasn’t trained since having flown in from Nigeria last night. He will hardly be in a fit state to play on Saturday anyway will he?
Also Kieran, the local press were reporting an £80k fine this morning - at the same time as the scaremongering about him being sold.
As a rule, just cos its in the paper doesn’t make it true!

The finger-waggers & the tut-tutters must have tripping over their carpet slippers to get on here first thing when the story broke. Particularly "those (of us) who study these things" (whatever the f*** that’s supposed to mean.)
As for Yakubu’s crime perhaps if he called himself Duncan Ferguson & got a pseudo Everton tattoo perhaps our fellow moralisers would have a different view of events.

Team discipline would go out the window and with it any hope of challenging for a top spot. After all the hassle he had to put up with, I wonder what Cahill thinks.
