We hear about the dearth of young English football talent constantly. At the same time, we hear about the forthcoming rule change from next season to allow 7 subs on the bench from which upto 3 can be used.

Would it not be a great idea and timely that the rule change is amended to ensure that at least 2 of the 7 subs HAVE to have come through a club's junior ranks or Academy. This would ensure that young talent have the opportunity to come through much to the benefit of both the clubs and the national team development.

What are your views of this opportunity?

All it means is that Chelsea,Man u and the likes will be able to have 7 world class players on the bench instead of 5 and those with small squads will name players that they wont even consider bringing on! A very subtle advantage to the big teams yet again in my view!

Well, they do something not too dissimilar in the SPL. As far as I can tell, it’s universally seen as a joke.

I think thats a great shout Ron - not sure it will happen but it would be interesting. Man U and even Everton have blooded youngsters in meaningless European games but this would give Managers the opportunity to have the option in games like the Sunderland one where you want a strong squad but with hindsight could have given a youngster or two half an hours premiership experience.

I like that idea Ron, and also agree with Dan that this seems to give the advantage to the clubs with the bigger squad (and megabucks!).

Absolutely brilliant idea and as such it will never happen.

In support of the proposed 7 man bench the FA say it will be a good way to blood youngsters.
Let them back up those words by insisting upon at least two of the benchees are under 20.

I also think that this is a brilliant idea, however i dont think the Fa is realy interested in bringing on young local players, as all they want is loads of bucks from Hong kong and New York. Good news today as the yanks will not do anything unless FIFA agree.
