The Mail Bag

Jug-Jelka

To quote one of the finest captains this club has ever had....."Jug-Jelka has been man of the match tonight & probably Everton's best player in the last few weeks" ? That came from the mouth of Kevin Ratcliffe last night, who was & still is the epitome of an Everton centre half.

Phil Jagielka has been Everton's most outstanding performer over the last couple of months, not weeks for me. He has been immense. He has been that good that in recent weeks I have been thinking who is best to play alongside him!! As he must be first choice at the minute.

Let's not forget he is in a team with players like Lescott, Arteta, Cahill, Pienaar, Yakubu, Yobo who always get the headlines when we are mentioned but for me Jagielka has been the best centre half in the Premier League over the course of the last few months (although the Dunny Monster might have something to say about that!!).

I want some of the ones who didn't think he would cut the mustard after a shaky start but he has shown me that at centre half he is absolute quality & long may that continue.

On current form you?re right, it?s a case of who to pick alongside him. But at the moment I?m happy with Yobo, Jags and Lescott all playing, we look solid at the back which isn?t something we?ve been able to say too often this season!

Now if only Neville could stop passing the ball to the opposition...

Last night was possibly Jagielka’s best performance in a blue shirt since arriving at the club. His interceptions were timed to perfection, the countless number of times he blocked the ball in dangerous situations, and his distribution wasn’t too bad either.

Well done Jags on a top quality performance and maybe this is why Moyes wanted him and at last all those doubters can finally get off his back!!!

Jags was brilliant last night as he was again last weekend.

I’m happy for him now that he has settled in, fought for his place and found his best position.

Jags is on fine form at the moment and looks a quality defender. How about he plays at right back, Yobo and Lescott in the middle and a fit Baines on the left. A strong looking defence, powerful, attacking and can score goals.

In view of Jags fine form. How about a change of formation?

After signing Phil Jagielka from Sheffield United in the summer for in the region of £4M, my initial thoughts were, 'great, another good versatile player to boost the squad. After seeing him in the centre of midfield, I became concerned that he was not up to the standard I thought and that we should try him at centre back.

However, since about Novemeber, Davy Moyes had started playing him at centre back and I have been very impressed. With a partnership of Yobo and Jagielka with Phil Neville or Tony Hibbert at right back and Joleon Lescott at Left Back, how can we complain? And with Leighton Baines to get back to full fitness and Dan Gosling for the future, out defence is looking really strong. Don't forget about Nuno Valnete for cover aswell.

Phil Jagielka is everything you want in a defender. Strong, Difficult to get past, great at tackling, and for around £4 million? What a bargain! It looks like David Moyes has pulled off another great transfer in the market again! COYB!
