Best 11 since our last trophy??

Comments (73)

A young Everton supporter asked me the other day "What would be your best 11 since winning the FA Cup in 1995?" This got me thinking and thinking and here's what I came up with:

Nigel Martyn
David Weir
Dave Watson
Joleon Lescott
David Unsworth
Mikel Arteta
Thomas Gravesen (first time)
Gary Speed
Andrei Kanchelskis
Kevin Campbell
Wayne Rooney

I'm sure there are better but this is what I came up with; not a bad side??

That is a shocking side Chris! Weir at right back? Unsworth would’nt get into my top 30 players of the last 12 years.I would also go for Lee Carsley over or Joe Parkinson over Gravesen.

I did say this was off the cuff. Weir actually played left back many times... Joe Parkinson ? you kidding?? Carsley was Gravesen's bitch during his first spell so grav over carsley. The squad was picked on form at that time. For me, Rhino was a power house who weighed in with vital goals. Campbell almost single-handedly kept us up. Kanchelskis's first season was superb and he weighed in with some lovely goals.

Great servants to the the club they were but Weir and Unsy certainly wouldn?t get in my team ahead of Yobo, hell if we?re gonna be stupid we could put Joe-Max Moore in for Arteta.

In all seriousness though your post got me thinking...there isn?t many in your list that I?d be rushing to stick into our current team... Kanchelskis, Speed and Martyn (all in their hey day of course). I guess it shows the strength of the current team.

And ps i?d have the 6 months of excellence of Stevie Peanuts over the 6 months (out of 5 years) of the Gravedigger.

Don’t like this FM stuff.
But Richard Gough would walk into any of my teams, as would a fit and able Dunc.
Whatever you think of him, fit and able he was awsome.
Big Ammo was another fave of mine, just loved the guy and the way he played for all his faults.

Chris, nice thread, but you’re off your head!!!

David Weir has NEVER played left back... he started off playing on the right every now and then, but moved to centre half where he was better. If you know your history, Joe Parkinson was the heartbeat of the Dogs of War, and a terrific player.... and Carsley (his bitch) - you should wash your mouth out!!!

I’d have to agree with a few of your choices, but Rhino ain’t one of em!!!

Andy I would have to take the Man Utd badge-kissing mother fucker over Yak, Rooney got me on the edge of my seat everytime he touched the ball. Yak hasn't had that effect, Kanchelskis: old-fashioned winger, lovely quick feet, I guess the above players I picked whether they were the best since 1995, they were the ones that I have fond memories of.

There can be no doubt the starting eleven we have now is superior to the team of 1995. I would say it's the best side since 1996 actually. People will assume 1995 was a good team because we won the FA Cup but I feel that was more down to relevant absentees that Manchester United had on the day that enabled us to beat them.

Back then we had some really hard working players such as Parkinson, Hinchcliffe and Watson, but little in the way of flair apart from Limpar and later Kanchelskis. I would not swap the team of today for the 1995 side for all the tea in China. Look at the abundance of talent and future stars at our disposal. Artreta, Cahill, Vaughan, Anichebe and the list goes on. I am certain that it won't be long now before we do win another piece of silverware and with Liverpool on a downward spiral it's a good if not great time to be in the blue half of the city.

PS My heartfelt congratulations to Barnsley for their victory, and to Inter Milan tonight, ahead of time.

Dont get all starry eyed about the likes of Unsy, Weir, Gough, Hutchison, S Watson & even Big Dunc they were average players who were playing in a bad, bad team who were lucky on more than one occasion to stay in premier league.

I had to stick Joe P in cos he was amazing, that good he would of been in england squad barring injury top man & Andrei who until recently would be the pleyer we had who could get in most sides in the prem & possibly europe. cant argue with that

I?ll probably get shot for this, but if it?s on playing ability alone and not ?legend? status or whatever- then that fat kid who used to play for us was a bit handy? I?d have to find room for Dacourt and Materazzi as well I reckon. Anyone else think it?s poor that our best left back, Lescott, is really a centre-half?

I know he let us down so often, but in a time when our chins were on the floor and the valium was on short supply, he almost single-handedly gave us hope of better times. Winners against the big three and the RS are even rarer than an RS win against Barnsley.

Even now I can’t get as high over a Yakubu / Arteta / Johnson etc etc goal as I did over a Duncan one.

@ Jay Cambell your team selection made me laugh indeed. Williamson, Oster, Angel, Ward, - the very thought of them makes me feel bad. Then I see Richard Harris?s selection and the nightmare continues.
I rate that side in 1996 too with Kanchelskis that finished 5th and the 2000 that got to the quater final of the FA cup. Walter had a good squad there but with Hutchinson, Barnby and Dacourt leaving things didnt take off.
Trudy made a point that in 1995 Everton may have won bcs of the absences of Man Utd players. At first I was annoyed with this comment and wanted to blast her. Then I looked at their squad ommisions: Cantona, Cole, Kanchelskis .... these are not insignificant. Then I looked at that squad they had - they are still very strong and Giggs was evil in the 2nd half. And Everton had beaten strong sides too such as Spurs and Newcastle with injuries etc. So I think Everton would have done very well with this side vs Man U whoever was in that side as the momentum was with Everton in that cup run and Man U struggled that season in the Cup (eg vs Palace) and were psyched out by one hit wonder Blackburn.
