What to do with Andy van der Meyde?

Comments (4)

Is it time for David Moyes to put Andy van der Meyde out of his misery and let him leave Goodison?

The troubled Dutch winger arrived at Everton with a big reputation, and a lot was expected of him. But problems off the field have seen the player struggle to perform when given his limited first team opportunities. Is it now time to let the player go, or would we be missing out on the talent that may eventually come out if he is given a little more time?

The former Inter Milan winger has shown (very) brief glimpses of what he is about, and his ability to beat a man and whip in a good cross; could he go on from there if given a chance?

We aren't exactly blessed with an array of wingers at the club at present, and haven't had an out-and-out quality winger since the depatures of the mecurial Russian Andrei Kanchelskis, and the Swede Anders Limpar. So would it be too soon to let him go without reaping the rewards of his talents on the pitch?

There is no doubt the lad has his problems, drinking said to be the main one. The question is, can he put them aside and find his form on the pitch for Everton?

Andy Van Der Meyde the footballer no longer exists. He has been replaced by a drunken dutch clown.

I don’t believe that Graham. Didn’t David Moyes name him in the squad for SK Braham away game?

If any of you still think he has any sort of future at any top-flight club, let alone one that is pushing for a CL place and going well in Europe, then - quite frankly - you’re mad.

We don?t need him. If he wants to stay as backup, fine but I wouldn?t have him in the first team. Who?s place would he actually take. Arteta?s? No chance. Arteta is our first choice right midfielder and despite not being an out and out winger is a far better all round player.

Pienaar? Pienaar has always been better and more highly rated than Shandy. Even at Ajax. My opinion on Van der Meyde is he left Ajax to early. Inter wasn?t right for him at the time and he wasn?t the finished article. He made a mistake and he?s paid for it. The last good, consistent season he actually had was the 02-03 season at Ajax where they went far in the Champions League with that excellent young team which included Van der Meyde, Trabelsi, Ibrahimavic, Van der Vaart, Chivu and Pienaar. Quality team but it was broken up too early and players moved on.

I don?t mind Van der Meyde as the player in fact he?s is probably one of our most talented players on his day but he?s certainly not a good as people make out. Every time I have seen him at Goodison he more than not played well but I wouldn?t have ever called him a touchline-hugging winger. He?d cut inside a bit, whip in early crossing and never really had lightening pace. If he got himself fit then yes I?d keep him and let him battle for his place but I feel he?s had too many chances and needs to move on.

Do we actually need a winger? I?m not really a big fan of them. They're luxury players in my opinion nowadays. I prefer attacking central players who play out there like Pienaar and Arteta for example. Wenger uses them with Hleb and Rosicky and there not doing bad. I think there more rounded players and offer more. They can go down the byline, they can cut inside, they can go for the cross or they can keep it and look for the pass.

To be honest though wingers are a dying breed. What is a natural winger? Where are the Dave Thomas?s of this day and age. I don?t see them.
