Uefa Cup Qualification

Comments (14)

Guys, there seems to be a number of threads suggesting that Uefa Cup qualification through the league is only from 5th spot. However I beleived that this season we had 4 spots awarded as 1 for the Carling Cup, 1 for the FA Cup and 2 for the league therefore being 5th & 6th, as demonstrated in this link.

Also a further 3 places are available across Europe for fair play awards and further spots can be obtained if English clubs win the Champions League and Uefa Cups. Can anyone give a definitive answer as to whether 6th spot is automatic qualification?

Having said all that lets beat City tonight and go for 4th anyway!

On the topic of the UEFA Cup, Mutu is out for a month, he has been banging the goals in for Firoentina this Season! So one less threat.

They also have Kroudrup, so we can look forward to him struggling to head the ball clear.

I am one of those conspiracy theorists who believe the FA fix the draw so that it’s two big teams for the final, i.e. Chelsea & Man Utd won’t meet each other til the final. Thus, a UEFA Cup spot doesn’t necessarily have to go from league poisiton

Watched him go off injured yesterday, but not seen anything saying that it will be a month. You sure about that one?

With Spurs winning the Carling Cup and only Man U & Chelsea of the teams above us still in the FA Cup, it looks like Uefa Cup qualification will only run to 5th place. I reckon 65 pts should be enough, which means we need to win 6 games. There is only one "must win" game and we all know which one that is! Win that and 4th is not out of the question. Aim high! COYB

This site usually has accurate information concerning qualification for European competitions.

This suggests that only 5th place guarantees Uefa Cup qualification. 6th would offer a place in the Intertoto cup (unless Chelsea play Manchester United in the FA Cup final, of course)

Here’s the official line on European qualification:

1st and 2nd place in the Premier League qualify automatically for the Champions League.

3rd and 4th place in the Premier League enter the Champions League qualifying round.

5th place in the Premier League enters the UEFA Cup 1st round.

The League Cup winners (Spurs) are guaranteed a UEFA Cup place. If they, somehow, finish in the top 5, then 6th place in the Premier League would also get a UEFA Cup place.

The FA Cup winners are also guaranteed a UEFA Cup place, however, if they qualify through their League position, then the runners-up qualify. If the runners-up have qualified through their League position, then an extra place is given to the League.

So, presently, we are looking at the following scenarios:

1st to 4th - Champions League
5th - UEFA Cup
Tottenham Hotspur (as League Cup winners) - UEFA Cup
FA Cup winners - UEFA Cup

The final position that is guaranteed UEFA Cup football depends on how Manchester United and Chelsea get on in the FA Cup and how Tottenham do in the League.

Presently, only 5th place is guaranteed UEFA Cup football.

If Manchester United and Chelsea meet in the FA Cup final, then one of the UEFA Cup spots is taken by the next team in the League (i.e. 6th), however, if Tottenham finish in one of these positions, then the UEFA Cup spot is given to the next team in the League.

So, the 7th placed team can still qualify for the UEFA Cup, depending on how things go in the FA Cup and the League.

However, if we win the UEFA Cup, we qualify no matter what.

when Spurs win the UEFA Cup, will that allow another team to take their carling cup place?

FAO John Smith. With regards to Spurs winning the Uefa Cup, the simple answer is that no extra place is awarded to the league. England has 3 places and CANNOT recieve any more. Below is the official UEFA rule on this:

Unless the UEFA Cup title-holder qualifies for the UEFA Champions League
through its domestic championship, it will be guaranteed a place in the first
round of the UEFA Cup. If the title-holder does qualify for the UEFA Cup
through its domestic competitions, the number of places to which its national
association is entitled in the UEFA Cup does not change. If the UEFA Cup
title-holder does not qualify for either the UEFA Champions League or UEFA
Cup through its domestic competitions, its participation in the UEFA Cup will
not be at the expense of the contingent of its association.

If Spurs had not of won in Wembley and then won the Uefa Cup there would not have been a problem of places been taken from the league.

So basically the best chances to not worry about all the permutations is to either win it, finish top 5, and sadly (after last years "spectacle") pray for a Man U - Chelsea final.

NB

It was meant to say England cannot recieve an extra place by virtue of a Spurs victory. It can recieve an extra place as a result of a Bolton victory or an Everton victory provided both clubs finish below 7th

Why are you all so worried about the UEFA Cup when were going to finish 4th and qualify for the Champions League.

If we lose 5th (I think we will be safe), did we enter the Intertoto? Didn?t think we did. If not, can we still get into the Uefa Cup automatically as we are currently the highest placed in the Fair Play League who is not already in the Uefa Cup?
