Arteta's Agent Talk

Comments (41)

According to the "talk about anything" Sun, but on sporting life website, Artetas agent says he is unsettled and should be playing for Spain if he was in a top four team. We have recently extended his contract, and I think we would get good money. I think he is talented and have some fancy footwork, but I have to say this year his freekicks and corners have been a real let down, and just like Beckham his pace is not great, but he gains half a yard and uses his passing ability. My thoughts are has he lost the extra drive and passion, or has he reached his potential. Based on this season, if we got a great offer I would be very tempted to use that money to buy one or two or even three players, and maybe have a bit more weight and muscle in midfield to help Peanuts and Osman. We need one that scores 10 to 12 goals.

Without doubt the man has talent and skill. He may not of hit the hights of the past couple of seasons this year but is anyone in agreement with me in being totally worn down in the persistent stories linking him with a move away? Maybe his agent should look more closely at his client and tell him to try and beat the first man with a corner or even try and score a free-kick because he seems to take everyone!!

I wouldn't like to lose him but I fear we are at the time of year where these stories will be coming thick and fast and I, for one, am sick of them! Let's hope the man himself comes out and says how dedicated he is to the Blues.

His agent actually says that he would be playing for Spain if he was playing for a top 4 club.

He does not say in the original piece that Arteta is unsettled.

If the Sun have chosed to add that, it is bollocks.

He is lucky to get in our midfield anyway at the moment, let alone get near the Spanish squad!

I think we should take it as a compliment that players like Arteta are linked with all these big name clubs - it shows how good they are. Arteta seems happy where he is, having signed a contract extension and having seen the club sign some big name players (e.g Yakubu) and have a decent run in Europe.

He has been rubbish this season so if we get a good offer and have have someone else lined up who is as good if not better why not let him go

Only a few weeks ago it was revealed by Moyes that he’s been playing through stomach & groin injuries all season & should, by right, have received surgery. Instead it was decided that he plays on through injury & rest in the summer.

This is why his performances haven’t been as impressive as he started the season.

To be honest sell Arteta and buy Manuel Fernandes.

Arteta is not in the Spanish squad for one reason alone: he's not good enough.

His dead ball delivery is terrible. His best performances are always against the Sunderlands of the league.

As long as he stays here we're going to get this story every bloody year.

Arteta = quality player, but he's just not THAT good.

Could it be that the agent was having a pop at the Spanish Manager for not looking beyond the "Top 4" clubs?

I feel I need to stick up for Mikky at the moment. He?s made it very clear on a number of occasions that he and his family are settled on merseyside and he loves the fans. Moreover, he?s an important part of the team and with a little less pressure on his shoulders he will flourish. I dread to think he may read the constant negativety that comes out of ToffeeWeb, and become unsettled.

As a season ticket holder and a regular away match attendee, I can confirm that I never hear a bad word said about Arteta. Yes, he has not performed well in recent weeks and his performances against the top 4 have not been up to standard, but to sell him would be ridiculous. He is practically our only flair player, and one with a culture of keeping the ball. Shouldn?t we be keeping our best players, and as for his performances against the top 4, its not like anyone else is doing anything remarkable.

Give Arteta a break, every player goes through a bad run of form, and he?ll come through it. He remains the ONE player in our team that can turn a game on its head, and make you say WOW. Fernandes is the only other that has the potential but has been dreadful in his current spell.

Get rid of Arteta and we risk losing our only creative influence, its not like Pienaar has been playing well recently.

Dan Johnson, get a vote together and find out how many would take Fernandes over Arteta, you’ll lose mate, Toffeeweb should organise it. Have you seen Fernandes recently?

Dan Johnson - WHAT???????

Fernandes shone fantastically with us last season and (probably more down to our snail-like pace in negotiations rather than anything else) went at the last minute to a much higher payday & Champion’s League football. He was quickly found out and came back to us on loan this season.

So far he has been absent. He is a fantastic talent but has less commitment than any other player in a blue shirt, irrespective of how much talent he may posess. He doesn’t seem to want to impress this time and I would be concerned that if he signed permanently we would have an even greater battle getting effort from him. If he can’t make the effort when he has something to prove.....

Arteta is class but has had a pretty awful season by his standards - with some mitigation, given his injuries. I am willing to give him a break for having an off season considering how strong he has been for four years and how strong I believe he will be again. If he really wants to go, now would be a good time to get maximum money for him a la Rooney. We can move on and are an attractive club for most players now, whereas then, we weren’t yet we still grew.

What bothers me most is yet another greedy, interfering agent stirring it up just as Sivebaek, Gravesen’s agent, did four years ago. When he eventually went after being peddled everywhere for a couple of years we only clung onto fourth by other teams below us screwing up. The good thing was getting Arteta who then grew to become the fantastic player of the next few seasons.

Fair play to Mikel, he has repeatedly scotched these rumours and I don’t need to seek his reassurance again. He knows he is class and is part of a team whose fans love him. Let’s not allow an agent’s money lust make us sufficiently paranoid to make him think he is no longer important to us.

"Mikel deserves better," the agent said in The Sun.

"If he was at one of the best four clubs in England or Spain he would be an international."

Please explain how that translates into "Arteta Unrest Exclusive"?

Is it just me or is this yet another case of a story being blown up to belittle Everton? The headline on goal.com even says as much! I agree with Geoff Atherton that it’s just as likely that the agent was having a pop at the Spanish national team manager for not looking further than the top four clubs for international players. Nowhere in the quote does it mention anything about Arteta being unsettled and wanting a move. Only the player and those closest to him will know for sure but everytime I’ve heard Arteta himself interviewed he’s always seemed happy enough, and he did sign the new contract only last summer. Sounds like more strirring from our friends at the Sun to me!

IF Mikel was not carrying an injury and playing to his potential we’d be comfortably sat TOP 3 or 4 right now. Especially so if the incompetent offficials had not cost us at least 7 points already. Not to mention the RS benefitting from the other side of the coin harming our top4 challenge even more so.

Still, if we play to our potential in the last 6 games the top 4 finish is still on.
Arteta’s agent realises his prise asset will make him a stack of cash in fees should he move...vested interest in encouraging him to move is therefore clear.
Mikky ain’t daft though so worry not!

Graham Duffy..."Arteta been useless this season"...have you seen Arteta this season...have you ever kicked a football or are you from Barcelona and know nothing...use your eyes, the guy is still a head shoulders torso and thighs above anyone else we have in midfield even if the performances have not scaled the heights this season : the guy is carrying an injury, he?s giving everything he has, just lay off.

Also for all the Fernandes slaggers who have come out of the wodwork since January..did you see his stats in the derby? 20 passes, 19 completed..compare that to our standard 63%.. The guy is just starting to find his feet after bench warming in Spain and injury..he could just be the one who takes us to the promised land come May.

And another thing... although the cutting edge was missing on Sunday (for obvious reasons), can anyone ever remember a possession stat where we had 50% at Anfield? I can?t... I?m not even sure I remember us having 50% at Goodison. Take the positives and let?s push on... 4th is still there to be won!

Ok dont want to get jumped all over here and I love the best little Spaniard but I have heard this from a VERY reliable source (who has been right about every transfer in or out in the past 18 months:

Arteta’s wife has now moved back to Spain (not enjoying Merseyside anymore) this happened just after Christmas about the same time Mikki’s form really took a nose dive.
He keeps going back to Spain for ’Treatment’ on his injury not sure if this is 100% true or a bit of creative marketing by the club etc..... My friend states he will go in the summer back to Spain for approx £12m.

I hope its a bit of a wind up on his part but he has not steared me wrong yet.

I am not normally one for rumours and the like. I like to see a new player being photographed in his new Everton shirt or not before I comment but as I say this guy has been right so often and never speculates so......... we will see come August I guess.

Arteta is good enough to at least make the Spanish squad. I?m sorry but he is. Yes he?s having a dip in form but Alonso had a dip in form for the last two seasons and still makes the squad. Arteta is a far better player in my opinion. He has alot more to his game, is younger and more versatile.

The fact of the matter is Aragones will not pick he because of who he plays for. Its the truth and even the Spanish journalist Guillem Balague admitted this. Balague is a fan of Liverpool and even he says Mikel is good enough for the Spanish squad but will only get his call up once Aragones leaves which is looking like next season after the Euro?s.

Aragones likes to keep his squad very tight nit and picks from the same pool of players. Until he is gone Mikel will not get a look in.

Another thing that goes against him is his position. Spain like to play with two natural out and out wingers and Arteta is not a winger but playing wide right is his favored position at club level. He?d have to play centrally for Spain.

I think Arteta could offer something to Spain?s squad. They don?t have a central midfielder with his style. They have defensive midfielders like Senna and Passing midfielders like Alonso, Fabregas and Xavi but they don?t have a midfielder with Arteta dribbling skills or technique. He?d definatly be a good player to have in the squad.

People who are saying let's get rid need to get a grip. Seriously if anyone deserves a dip in form its Arteta. He?s carried us for 2 seasons. Yes he has deficiencies in his game but he?s still by far one of out more talented players.

Mike Newhouse, Arteta doesn?t have a wife he has a girlfriend and she?s never lived on Merseyside.

She?s always lived in LA and has a career over there. She visits alot yes but she?s never actually lived over here ? just like she didn?t live in Scotland.

Why sell Arteta and buy Fernandes when we can have them both? I don’t see the point. I think in terms of natural ability Fernandes and Arteta are our best players and our the future if we want the football to improve. Don’t get me wrong the likes of Osman and Pienaar are good technical players but there one touch players whereas Arteta and Fernandes are real ball players who don’t need good players around them to excel.

As much as I like Fernandes I’d rather keep Mikel. Although I believe Fernandes will be the better player in a few years one he reaches his potential you can’t deny what Arteta has done for this club and what he can do in the future on the pitch and off it by attracting better players to join him in the Blues side.

I hope we keep them both. I very much doubt Arteta will leave and I really hope we buy Manny. Hopefully we’ll see then linking up against Derby like they did last year. Its obvious both are lacking confidence and a game like this could really got them going.

24   Posted 03/04/2008 at 18:52:17

Is anyone really worried about losing Mikky? I love the guy but his performances this season are not up to scratch so a ’top 4’ side won’t want him. He’s only ever linked with Athletico and they’re our equivalent in Spain so he won’t be increasing his chances of playing for Spain by signing for them if you follow what his agent has said.
Pete Gunby
25   Posted 03/04/2008 at 19:05:36

Mikky may not have shone so brightly this year, but he is still a talent and we need as much of that as we can get. Part of the reason other players stand out is that Arteta draws extra attention from our opponents. To those of you calling for his head I think you will be sorry if he left. I’d rather see Everton add talent and improve, rather than trade it away and tread water while searching for a replacement. COYB.
Connor Rohrer
26   Posted 03/04/2008 at 19:13:25

Alan Clarke, alot of clubs would take him in both Spain and England. Even though Evertonians haven’t been happy with his season as a whole the whole outside world think he’s been the catalyst for our good season. The media think he’s been one of our better players as do alot of other clubs fans.

Valencia offered 15 million in the summer according to Guillem Balague and Gabriel Marcotti. I mention these two journalists because they know there foreign football. Real Zaragoza, Athletico and Espanol where also interested.

He wouldn’t look out of place for a top four club either. Look at some of there wingers. Kalou, Babel, Nani, Giggs, Joe Cole, Pennant, Rosicky, Eboue etc. I’d have him over any of the players mentioned and when I see Bentley being linked with the top four I know for a fact Arteta is good enough. Bentley is a good player but he’s not a patch on Mikel.

Connor - my good Catalan mate Toni told me last September that Mikel was now an Espanyol player.
Chris Dottie
28   Posted 03/04/2008 at 19:53:26

Keith, if Arteta is now an Espanyol player he’s got an awful short -term memory to turn up at Goodison Park every other week. I suspect he will move to Spain this summer but Villarreal and Atletico Madrid are more likely destinations.

And the point about his girlfriend is a very relevant one because they will be getting married this summer and she does not want to live on Merseyside by all accounts.

He’s been brilliant for us, but when he arrived he was our only class act. Everton have moved on and I wouldn’t be disappointed if we thanked him, took the 12 mill and got a Champions League winger in to take us to the next level.
Connor Rohrer
29   Posted 03/04/2008 at 20:59:48

Chris Dottie, he won’t leave. I guarantee it. Why would he? Where improving all the time and getting better players around him, he’s settled hear and has lots of friends and he’s the star player off Everton football club.

If he was going to leave which he won’t then Moyes and ourselves would expect alot more than 12 million and alot of clubs would be willing to play over that price.

Arteta’s girlfriend’s never lived with him. She never in Glasgow and she doesn’t in Liverpool. I doubt she’d make him move away from a club he has a real connection with.

Believe me we haven’t moved on from Arteta. That is just plain bollocks. We’ve improved but we haven’t improved that much. Arteta is still the most talented player in the first eleven and could easily be a champions League winger/midfielder.

Which 12 million Champions League winger would actually join us and take us to the next level? Realistic options please.

We should be adding players to the likes of Arteta, Lescott, Yakubu and Cahill.
Alan Clarke
30   Posted 03/04/2008 at 21:03:51

Espanyol? How’s he going to get in the Spanish squad playing for Espanyol? This is the same old shit every year with Arteta, just watch he’ll sign a new lucrative contract with us in the summer. Lescott’s agent did it, linking him with Arsenal then he signs a new contract, Ronaldo does it every summer at Man U. Even Cahill’s agent linked him with West Ham. It’s the oldest trick in the book. I think Arteta is on to too much of a good thing at Everton to leave. That Spanish fella on Sky Sports La Liga coverage said Spain will have a new coach after the Euros this summer and then it is likely Arteta will get a game for Spain.
Andrew Oxton
31   Posted 03/04/2008 at 21:10:05

12 Million for Arteta? This is a joke right? I cant believe you blues here. Arteta is irreplaceable. So he’s had a poor season (by his high standards) but for fucks sake talk about taking a step back if we loose someone of his abilities.

34   Posted 04/04/2008 at 01:19:22

Does his agent come and watch him every week. He has been only a shadow of the player we have seen for the two seasons previous. He would not get into a top 4 side in England hence he cannot get into the Spanish side. Can’t get a corner or a free kick in the box and lacks pace. He hardly ever breaks sweat. Enough said.

36   Posted 04/04/2008 at 07:33:15

Arteta has clearly been playing some games when well less than 100% fit as Niall mentioned.Clearly this accounts for his form not reaching the heights of last season. But even so he has still had a good season and is one of the most creative players in the Premiership in my opinion.
Basically the lad is one of DM’s best signings - I hope he stays with us for a long time. It seems to me that we lose a couple of games and lots of Evertonians find negative things to say about the team, manager, individual players, chairman etc.
For goodness sake let’s be a bit more positive.
Even if his performances haven’t been up to scratch - John Hall - "a shadow of the player we have seen" what a bliding goal against Fiorentina!! If that’s what he can do when he’s only a shadow of a player - let’s sign a few more like him !!!!!!!
Michael Brien
37   Posted 04/04/2008 at 07:50:17

Sorry for above error - Arteta goal vs Fiorentina = Blinding goal, brilliant goal, amazing goal..........take your pick of superlatives. The lad is a superb player, one of the most skilled players in the Premiership.Let’s rejoice in the talent that he ’s got. I recall reading in the Sun in 1971 that we were going to sign Trevor Francis !!! Rumours are "unproved statements" and more often than not remain that.

Contract extensions mean sod all these days, agents talk bollocks. So the best thing to do is wait til next season starts and see what shirt Arteta is wearing.

I think there is every possibility that there will be ins and outs at GP this summer, so sit back, hold tight and read TW not the Sun.

Some of you talk crap slagging off Arteta when he?s our most talented player. He hasn?t been at his best but he?s still a quality player and what would we be left with? Carsley and Neville playing "Who's the better Sunday League player" ? coz playing them centre mid together is why we lose to top sides.
