Uefa Cup parachute? No say Beeb...

Comments (14)

According to the BBC, Everton have no chance to qualify for Europe!

I'm not a conspiracy theorist so it's probably just bad journalism but no mention of Everton as one of the Intertoto applicants (we did didn't we?)

And when they mention the Fair Play place they say Man City are in the driving seat but when you look at the Fair Play League , we're 2 places above City.

You'd think the Beeb didn't want Everton in Europe again next season?

Erik, you may have a point about he Intertoto but that Fair Play League hasn't been updated since 5 April.

Relax everybody, the Intertoto draw has already been made.

The UEFA website now confirms that Aston Villa will play an away leg on July 20th and the home leg seven days later. They'll play the winner of games between teams from Northern Ireland, Finland or Denmark. How jealous we'll be at those Brummie boys playing in the Arctic Circle, legoland or Linfield. I think we should let them know before Sunday. Here's hoping!

If we end up finishing 6th or 7th, behind Villa, then these are the scenarios:

Any scenario in 6th we are in the Intertoto.

Pompey win the cup and finish 6th: We finish 7th we are in the InterToto.

Cardiff win the cup: We have to finish 6th to guarantee anything.

So if we are sitting in 7th at the end of league season, seeming like we have blown our chance of Europe, it could all change after the FA cup final!

Every cloud has a silver lining!

Thats also barring Man City getting 9pts from 9 and Pompey losing all their remaining league games!

How times change. Not long ago there was a feeling amongst some Evertonians that we could finish in 3rd place and lift the Uefa Cup. Those of us who could see the same old scenario happening again kept schtum. Now its the fucking Intertoto up for discussion. Successfull season again???? I think not.

To be fair to Tony Marsh, he’s spot on. If we finish below Villa & Pompey- has it still been a good season???

Brian. Since when has qualifying for the inter toto been classed as a silver lining ?
It is an absolute disgrace to think that way (Providing you are serious).
My god !
How Moyes lovers will stop at nothing to put a positive spin on the garbage we are playing. And the spineless capitulation that we are witnessing is beyond me.
The inter toto is for losers for christ sake !
So come on then.
Tell me again how good we where early on in the season and how our football was fluent and wonderful to watch.
Oh ! Then tell me about the trophies and 4th place finish and how we strolled to victory against cannon fodder opposition.
Like Fulham etc etc.
Im’ sorry lads but i’m sick of this. But we have improved argument.
It’s bollox.

Pompey havent entered the Intertoto so if the are 6th and villa 5th the fact they win or lose is irrelevant. If however pompey are 5th and lose the FA cup and villa 6th then we dont get anything as villa have entered the intertoto

Reading the BBC article, it does, as said above, just look like a case of lazy journalism and it seems to me like they assume we’re going to qualify by finishing 5th (typical BBC Kiss of Death), hence why it talks about Villa and Man City so much.

They don’t mention us in the ’back-up’ qualifications because we’re fifth and would qualify anyway. I know they really are out to get us but sometimes you’re just paranoid...

Just noticed Tony’s comment. You love it when we fail don’t you Tony? You can’t lose: if we do well you keep schtum and we don’t care because we’re happy that our football club is doing well and you’re just not important, and if we do badly you get to come on here and crow about it to the rest of us who dare to take the risk and believe that we might do well. The intertoto was beyond us not so long ago, and we’re now discussing it as a worst case scenario. Major progress you seem to refuse to see. I’m determined to take you on, yet you seem to go missing whenever I ask questions of you. What do YOU think should be changed at the club?

Well said Mike Allison - but for god?s sake don?t ask Kopite Tony his opinion. There are only so many negative, unconstructive and obtuse comments I can take from him, and he?s already said enough on this post.

We all know we have run out of steam, but let's just see if we can beat Villa, hang on and secure 5th and build again for next season.

Ask that question to me Mike. I would drop Neville from midfield and then maybe hit him with a spade if he concedes one more dangerous free kick or belts one more aimless hoofball to the opposition. That said, he did provide some comedy relief when he conceded a penalty by saving a certain goal with his hands. That was genius.

Dave Lynch. Qualifying for Europe at this stage of the season is more important than playing pretty football. As long as we get through we can play as ugly as we like.

Cast your mind back to the first half of the season, if you can remember that far, and how would you describe our football then??

To be fair to Mr Marsh, if we don?t get European football next season, this season will be a resounding failure.

Up to the Fiorentina 2nd leg, this season was really enjoyable, but now we?re sweating on 5th and possibly even 6th place. Unfortunately we can?t have a successful 3/4 of a season and unless we beat Villa this weekend, I?m afraid they?ll have undone ALL the good work that came before our exit from the Uefa Cup.
