Uefa Cup Qualification Twist

Comments (14)

If the runner up in the Champions' League Final goes automatically into the Uefa Cup, and both finalists are already in the Champions League for next season by virtue of their places in the Premier League [as is the present case], does that mean an additional place will arise even though 5th place, Carling Cup Winner and FA Cup winner get into the Uefa Cup? If so one team in 6th would get into that competition, which would be heartwarming if we don't make 5th.

That place isn't an English place though, it's the Champs League runner up spot! Im not sure where it would go but why should it go to England? Would you have asked the same question if Barca had got past Man U and it not be an all-English final?

Stupid me! I thought as it was two English Clubs in the Final then the "spare" place, if any, would go to an English Club. Shows you how much I know!

Since when have the Champions League runners up got entry into the Uefa Cup? The only effect of two English teams being in the final would be the same as one in the final - namely being that if they were to win the comp, but finish outside the qualification places (ie 2005 - Redshite) then the winner would get the Champs League place ahead of the higher league placed team that would drop into the Uefa Cup. In this season's case it doesn?t matter as both teams have qualified regardless through league position.

If Man U win and Chelsea lose, then Portsmouth win the FA Cup, whilst Wrexham are relegated from the Football League, my wife stops using my credit card, Lord Lucan turns up, ’Roffer’ shaves off his jizz bib beard, Shergar appears at the next Grand National and David Platt gets life on Coronation Street. What happens then?......

Has anyone else checked out the European football 2008/09 qualification website ?

It clearly states ?Everton qualified for European football?. As this is a pretty authoritative site, it looks as though we have made it. I know it only means we have at least made the Intertoto but surely we can get through two rounds to get to the Uefa Cup first round proper, especially with our improved coefficient this time.

I know there isn’t much sense in all of this (see above), but can anyone recommend a readable source which sets out the actual regulations for the European tournaments and qualifying for them?

Great site by Phil. We could be playing an Irish distillery if we get in via the Intertoto. In regards to a site that gives you reliable information would be (Intertoto draw already made) ... Finding the information in the minefield is a different matter though. Good Luck!

Has anyone noticed how the UEFA cup final could be between Zenit St Petersburb and Fiorentina ? two clubs that we beat in the competition..... How frustrating!!

That website is obviously for mugs. Have we qualified for Europe?? No, clearly not...YET. If a website says otherwise its clearly nonsense, not rocket science.

You?re right, we?re not yet qualified for Europe.

I e-mailed the guy who runs the site to ask for his explanation and he e-mailed back (amazingly quickly) to say that, as only Aston Villa and Portsmouth can overtake us, and Portsmouth have not entered the Intertoto, then Everton must qualify.

I then put to him the scenario where Pompey finish 5th, Villa are 6th, we?re 7th and Cardiff win the Cup. It took him a little longer but he eventually replied that this outcome would leave us out of Europe.

It seems to me that we need one more point from somewhere or other teams slipping up. Fingers still crossed!

The website has now been amended but hopefully our qualification will be achieved soon.
