Sacred Ground

I was with a bunch of Evertonians who went to the Fiorentina game in Florence and we stayed for a few extra days vacation. We ended up in Rome and like a lot of tourists visited the Vatican. I have to say, St. Peter?s was a bit disappointing. It is very old with a lot of obstructed views and too many columns and not enough parking. It looks like it hasn?t been decorated in about 500 years. There?s a ceiling they just keep cleaning but never repaint.

Anyway, I read this week they are finally planning to move to a new bigger 21st Century Cathedral. It?s technically outside the Vatican but hey, Rome is Rome is Rome, right? And as they are raising the money by selling the knick-knacks in the current place, it?s actually free except for about £100 million Euros. The point is, it?s important to forget silly emotional ties to the past and to places and to move on. Just because something is historic doesn't mean its worth anything.

Am I right? A lot of Evertonians could learn from that! Even in my own group there were some silly sods who said St Peter?s was worth preserving but they are clinging to the past. Now if they would just do something about Westminster Abbey?

While we're at it lets just move every historic building to a greenfield site and build a Tesco beside it.

What a stupid arguement. While there is merit in highlighting the deficiencies of Goodison, there is no merit in using St Peter?s as a parallel. And that's not because they don't compare, I happen to think they do on every level. I just hope you're not writing on here for a cheap laugh.

If you think the Vatican is dissapointing or St Peters is, then you missed the point, which means you are also missing the point about Goodison. The object is never to stay at Goodison in its current state indefinitely, it's not possible. But it doesn't follow we have to move sites or leave the city.

When you think of Rome or are planning to visit for that matter, what are the first two things that come to mind? Ehhh... the Vatican and the Colosseum. Where would Rome be without them? Where would you visit then? What would you think of Rome as a city. What would you think of Everton as a club? Another sell out club?

If we move to Kirkby we will be no bigger, or no more of the people's club than Middlesbrough, Bolton, Wigan, Sunderland... need I go on?

And gargle with some holy water while you?re at it.
How could you compare Kenwright's Blue Palace with god?s humble home.

How about moving Stonehenge next to the Huyton Asda? 90% of The Druids would still turn up but imagine the new clientele base that could be established! Those stones could actually be repaced by inflatable replicas, and it could be renamed ?the Kit Kat henge? , Nestle would pay £67m for the privilige over 15 years, although this could be open to lower negotiation depending on how high up the league of historic monuments it manages to stay.

Ayone want to rent a polystyrene pyramid??

What about the 15,000 moped taxis and to get all the tourists to and from the Vatican before and after the service.... haha

James, You get the award for the most humerous post about the ground move. Well, it amsued me anyway.

Paul Ramsey
You?ve given us a great idea: "St peters of Knowsley home of the Pope" Can be reached only by bicycle!! That a masterstroke of marketing genius that stem the reduction in church attendances.

There could well be a suitable site going in the near future with the benefit of a Tesco next door.

The only problem is its on a contaminated landfill site but there again the holy water will take care of that.

Am I missing something here, or is it because its three o clock in the morning? I don't quite understand what your saying, the first couple of paragraphs I hope are tongue in cheek and then the last paragragh ..... I dont know. But what I've got from your posting is an overwhelming sense of righteousness towards EFC redeveleping Goodison. Buster? Have you got a tandem spare, I'm thinking of riding to Kirby ... on a handcart!

I think this post was lost on Paul Ramsey ? not sure which of these the post was; ironic, sarcastic, cynical, sarcastic or just plain funny but Paul should look up those words.

Excellent and funny parallel to Kirkby

Will the old site of St Peter’s be turned into a car park for the big Devil Worshipping Temple being built on the park next to it?

Paul Ramsey ? there?s no such thing as a cheap laugh. They?re free and what?s wrong with that. Goodison is the only place where I worship. Oh bugger! just got struck by a lightning bolt.

That’s OK then. Everton move to Rome and develop the St Peter’s site. There’s loads of capacity not to metnion opportunity for prayers - which we seem to need - and Tesco sounds sort of Italian does’nt it ?
