Michael Bradley (USA)

Having just watched Bradley´s non-existent display against the type of midfield player he would be against in the Premier League, I cant say he's a replacement for Carsley, surely. I wouldn't take him on a free after that performance.

I watched him in a game against Mexico, I think it was, a few months ago playing in the same role and wasn't that impressed either. He looked better going forward than playing the holding role to me.

He touched the ball about 8 times in the first half, and about 3 times in the second half - hardly a good game to rate him on. He plays in a different position for Herenveen anyway.

Whilst i would say i wouldn’t judge him on the strength of one performance all he seemed to do was make a few rash tackles.

He was crap.

We need better than that if we want to move forward.

If he cant stand out in a poor American team I can not see him doing a job in the prem I thought he was awful.

To be fair to the lad, the entire USA team were shite from start to finish. It must be hard to get involved when you are getting outclassed by a nigh on full strength England side. After watching the first half, I just felt that Owen Hargreaves is the PERFECT type of player we are screaming for for the Carsley role.... Note that I said "type" because I do realise there is no chance we would ever get him. He has a fantastic engine, can deliver a good set piece and is a very combatative midfielder, wthout being too crude in the tackle.
The more I see of this lad the more I see why Otmar Hitzfelt, Sven Goran and Fergie rated him so much.

Does he have a younger brother???????

To be honest everyone was shite which is the norm for England games. No one actually ever does anything. No movement, no passion and 22 players passing backwards and sideways. No competitivness at all.

From what I have seen for Heerenveen and at the Under 20 world cup he is a promising player. An all round midfield player. Good in every area but doesn’t have any excellent attributes. Similar to Cahill in that respect. Not pleasing on the eye like a Arteta, Pienaar or Fernandes just simple and effective.

I wouldn’t mind having a go at him if the price is right. If its 3/4 million then I’d take it. Someone who can come in and do a job, learn his trade and develop into the midfielder Moyes wants him to be. He has the right attributes. Height, tenacity and good finishing ability.

If we did buy him I wouldn’t want him to be first choice. He’s only 20 and not ready to be playing week in week out. If we can buy a good centre midfielder and bring Bradley alongside him he could learn things off him and be his understudy so to speak.

Unlike Connor I havent seen much of the lad so can only really comment on today’s game.

To me a good player or even one with potential stands out in any game and I know we’re not talking about a Rooney or Ronaldo type situation but I thought the whole game passed him by and when he was on the ball he was poor.

I would much sooner look at Giles Barnes or even Koumas and get a "proper" Carsley type who can tackle without getting sent off and who has a good engine like Hargreaves to play alongside them.

As Man U,Chelsea and RS already have these type of players there must be someone available to take that mantle on.

I recently watched some highlights of Cana and to me I feel he is another who would get sent off every week in the prem.

I dont have all the answers but I’m sure DM has,if he gets the backing!!

Jay Harris, I don’t think Bradley will ever be a player who stands out. As I’ve said he’s decent in alot of areas but none of his attributes stand out. Like Cahill for example. Bar aerial ability Cahill doesn’t really have anything about his game that stands out and gives you that wow factor. If Bradley going to be anything in the future he’ll be an effective box to box midfielder and nothing more.

Giles Barnes would be an excellent signing although he’s probably destined to make a career as a wide player. He hasn’t set the world alight this season but he has had injuries and played in the worst team in Premier League history. He has alot of attributes to be successful. Pace, strength, versatility and most of all a footballing brain. At 6ft he’s also got height on his side.

He’s someone I’d like to see here. Someone who can come and develop, be a squad player and change games as a substitute. Arteta and Pienaar are good wide players but if there having an innefective game someone like Barnes could inject and bit of pace and width to the game. We still lack a midfielder who can get beyond teams and strech them with pace. I’d take Koumas on Loan and make him a squad player.

The big signing of the summer has got to be the defensive midfielder. To be honest I haven’t got a clue who it will be. Alou Diarra has been mentioned and I rate him but I’m not completely sure we are actually after him. He fits the bill but so do alot of players. Cana is a good player but he’s a little unrealistic. He’s more likely to go to a Champions League club. It’ll be interesting to see who Moyes goes for. I’m hoping for someone tall and mobile.

I’m still hoping we go in for Manny Fernandes. There’s be nothing on it yet but its early days. He’s got that x factor where looking for and with a pre-season under his belt, some confidence and a run of games he’ll be quality for us. I’d sign him permantly but Moyes seems to be looking at another loan. I don’t really care aslong as we get him for a full season. Missing out once was bad enough but missing out twice would be awful.

I trust Moyes with signings though. He knows what type of player suits English football and on the whole his signings have been very good. Lets hope he gets the right players in.

Song at Arsenal looks good and there’s still a hope for Scott Parker to push on and become a great player. Obviously there’s loads out there but it’s all about dough. I think Hartley and the lad Robson at Celtic would be a great double signing. We need a class forward, right back and Arshavin. COYB

I haven’t been able to see the game (work gets in the way) so I can’t say anything about his performance today, however I am VERY much in the camp of bringing him in. I think he is one of the bright spots on the USA team right now, even if he didn’t show it today. Especially if he could be had on the cheap, he can be a great squad player with a very strong upside. There have been MANY games for the USA where he completely outclassed the rest of the team. He would have lots of turnovers because he would play lots of perfect cutting balls to space but NO ONE on the team was thinking on the same wavelength or willing to make the run. As he’s proven with his club team, when he is on a team that can get some chemistry, he can help them reach another level.

I don’t know if he’s ready to start in the EPL, but if we can get him for under 4m, I’d pull the trigger in a heartbeat and love every minute of it.

Connor
as always cant disagree with you and totally with you on Fernandes.

For me he should be the first signing either on loan or permanent so we can get him in preseason and not piss about like last year.

He’s a class above what we’ve got and once he regains full fitness cant see him losing the ball too often.

Did like Cana at one stage but looking at a recent video compilation he looks like a continental Robbie Savage with a worse temper and tackle.

12   Posted 29/05/2008 at 03:51:14

Perhaps, Micheal Bradley can be as our future replacement for Tim Cahill’s and for the time being, as his understudy since I don’t think our super Tim’s will be able to maintain his performance and fitness for the next few years.
Mark Cassin
13   Posted 29/05/2008 at 05:13:36

@Jay Harris, totally lost on your comparison of Cana with Robbie savage? wtf?

As for Bradley how anyone can judge him solely on one performance is anyones guess. He is a 20-year-old who has a good track record ? as connor says it is always good to buy these young players as understudies.

You beat me to this post, I can only agree he is fucking shite. As for the idiot who said " Cahill offer nothing apart from ariel threat", quite simply you are a moron. Why did we fall apart with 8 games or so to go, oh yes because that waste of space Cahill was not not playing! Cahill is better than any of the current midfield AND IS BETTER THAN MOST BE TOUTED ABOUT.
I am not massive fan of any one player, but for comment like this it really pisses me off.

15   Posted 29/05/2008 at 08:10:50

I wouldnt judge him on one performance but at the same time I wouldnt judge him too much on playing for Heerenveen in the Dutch league.
Remember the record Georgios Samaras had when he was there?
I recall everyone saying he could be the next big world star and in the end it showed just how weak the Dutch league is in general.
I personally wouldnt be going after Bradley with too much conviction when we could go after more accomplished and technically better footballers like Diarra.
Its not worth just signing another version of Carsley who is ok at breaking the play but wants rid of the ball as soon as he as it, in other words commited but very average technically.
As someone said if we are going to genuinly challenge that top 4 and also for honours we are looking at something a bit better than Michael Bradley.

Interesting that people are dissing Bradley after last night but still raving about Giles Barnes.
Giles Barnes is one of the most over-rated footballers around, with an ego to match. He has never looked that good (bar a few games in the championship) in a fairly poor Derby side.
I woudln?t touch Barnes at all at the moment.
Bradley didn?t impress alot last night, but then Carsley doesn?t when you watch us play either. Playing in a defensive midfield role doesn?t make you stand out unless you do something exceptional.
Ciarán McGlone
17   Posted 29/05/2008 at 09:21:20

He was less than average...and I don’t accept the premise that we cannot judge him on this game....What exactly are we supposed to judge him on? You tube? playing in a crap dutch league?

If a player doesn’t perform at his capacity for his country against the English at wembley...then in my opinion he’s not for us!

And if this was his capacity, then he’s clearly not the calibre of player that we need at this club!

18   Posted 29/05/2008 at 09:42:52

Ciaran,

In your little strange world, does nobody ever have a bad game.

We can only consider buying players who play well every week!!

Get a grip.

Nobody on this webiste is closely entitled to say he is crap based on a nothing game.

Players are watched for many games before the are bought, I don?t think for one minute that Moyes will base any judgement on last nights game alone and nor should we.

Has Arteta ever had a bad game?
Has Yakubu ever had a bad game?
Has Cahill ever had a bad game?

and on and on......yes they all have and they are not bad players are they?
Tony Part
19   Posted 29/05/2008 at 10:04:50

I think anyone can have a bad game as you say but even when players have a bad game there is still usually something you see in their game to suggest he is a decent player.

With Bradley I didnt see any real technical ability, pace, awareness to find a pass or even a real will to tackle and ok it was a friendly but players are not willing to even show the slightest bit of hunger then why bother turning up.

To be honest think we have the USA?s best player by a long chalk and the other one who has since retired at international level Brian McBride.

If I am looking for a midfielder to be commanding then I would like something a little bit more assuring than Bradley who may in time become the finished article but at this moment in time I think there are too many rough diamonds at Everton and if we are moving forward then we need the finished articles.

Sorry to say it, but I told you this ten times before and I’ll say it again: Michael Bradley never plays in a holding role for Heerenveen. I live in the Netherlands and I hardly ever saw him tackling. He’s good in going forward and arriving late in the box, just like Cahill. Cahil is way better though.

For a small fee I’d take him as he’s still young and Moyes should be able to get the best out of him. In general: Connor’s spot on.

21   Posted 29/05/2008 at 10:17:51

This guy is not the awnser. I have watched him a few times in the dutch league and he not that good. This would be a Claus Thomsen/Barry Horne like signing. Just a pair of legs with no ability to match.
Ciarán McGlone
22   Posted 29/05/2008 at 10:15:29

Phil,

Are you Mr Bradley’s agent?

Bit of a bizzarre rant. In my opinion, on last nights performance Bradley is an average player....

And the likes of Arteta may have bad games, but he’ll always do at least one thing in those bad games which identifies him as a cut above the rest...so you’re point is a little hollow.
Tony Williams
23   Posted 29/05/2008 at 10:26:57

To be fair it would be harsh to judge a player on one friendly.

You are not exactly going to go balls out in a meaningless game where everyone except for Rooney was taking it easy. Two terrible challenges by Shrek shouls have seen him off in my opinion.

Anyway back to the point, yes great players usually shine even in pointless friendlies but as I have already said, it would be harsh to judge the lad on one game which had no maning to it.

I haven’t watched him before but I assume our scouts have and if they feel he is good enough I will welcome him to the Blue family with open arms

Got to agree with Tony Part & Ciaran McGlone on this one fellas.....I too have watched Bradley several times, unfortunately I have not seen anything special about him.
More akin to Cahill ( although nowhere near as good) than Carsley ) so what’s the point.
Also is it coincidence that when being watched by lots of Blues in the only game they will realistically get a chance to see him show his talents he was crap !!...I think not

Considering the "Carsley role", would someone like Senna do? Big bald fella, played or plays for Villareal I think.

27   Posted 29/05/2008 at 11:17:51

While I agree its harsh to judge a player on one friendly game, my initial impression was that he looked pretty slow. We lack pace in our midfield already, so unless he was just knackered I can’t see how he would adjust to the prem! He looked rash in the tackle too. Sounds like he wants to go to Bundesliga anyway, so no great loss on last night’s evidence. I am just praying we get Arshavin...
Mike Allison
28   Posted 29/05/2008 at 11:32:40

I like Senna, he is a Spanish international now though, so hardly a well kept secret. I remember him at Goodison a couple of years ago, more of a box to box player, they had someone else doing the holding role that night.

How about Yaya Touré? Seems good at holding the ball up, and has an eye for a pass too.
Mark Griffiths
31   Posted 29/05/2008 at 13:55:58

There were a number of players last night in the England team who played worse than Bradley and they would walk into our team!

Cannot judge him buy one game!

Besides, Moyes always seems to get the best out of players.
James Marshall
32   Posted 29/05/2008 at 13:57:01

Which game were you watching Lee? He beat Beckham to the ball and that was the point made by the pundits at half time!

Bradley plays in a totally different position for Herenveen and has a good record there - he’s only 20 and could be good for us as he’ll fit our system better than the one he was employed in last night. They were all made to look very average last night and it was a dour game - the only good player on the pitch was Hargreaves (OK the shite Gerrard as well but he doesn’t count).

I know I always say it, but Bradley has some decent footage worth watching on YouTube - ha can tackle and has a good eye for both a pass and a goal. I’d be well happy if we bought him.
Andrew Preece
33   Posted 29/05/2008 at 13:44:14

I’ve not seen the guy play in the Dutch League, but if his natural position is in an attacking role then why judge him on a performance last night in an unfavoured position. If he’s been scouted that many times and he’s been playing in the ’Cahill’ role, it’s not going to be in Moyes’ head that he’d be a direct replacement for Carsley, so I’m not sure we should be rating him on that position alone assuming that’s where he’d play.
The comment saying "he’s more akin to Cahill, but not as good, so what’s the point".... er.... how much of last season did Cahill miss?! Might be nice to have a proper backup for the Cahill role!
I for one wouldn’t be disappointed if we signed him.
James Marshall
34   Posted 29/05/2008 at 14:15:16

Andrew have a look at him on YouTube, he’s alot like Cahill from what I can gather on there - he appears to be pretty good at breaking up play and scoring goals - something of an all rounder which would be well worth having. Young too so has time on his side - he’s very highly rated in Holland and the US.

FFS will you people stop going on about footage on YouTube !!!....YouTube could make Brett Angell look like gods gift to football but from very bitter experience we all know he ISNT.
YouTube footage means FUCK ALL so stop wanting to sign players because they look good on YouTube...by the way have any of you seen Van der Meyde’s footage on YouTube. He looks fuckin brilliant ..enough said !!

Strong words Nelly but true none the less, I imagine that if you search long enough that you can find a clip that makes Pembridge or Pistone look like world beaters
James Marshall

Keep your tights on kids - YouTube never lies! :)

(I still think he looks like a decent player - oh and by the way, theres no footage of Pistone of Pembridge on there, I looked, and the only footage of Brett Angel is of hime having lots of ice hockey fights - he loves a punch up by the looks of things!)

Hello-

An American National Team Supporter Here:

I think this discussion has been pretty on point, but I think you guys might be over-reacting a bit by his poor display (i thought he was atrocious vs. england).

But I think you have to look at the circumstances. MB was playing a holding role (not his best position), with a MLS player (Clark), and overall very poor attacking options in front of him in johnson (who is the bane of USNATs supporters existence) and Josh Wolfe ( a BL II reject).

If you surround him with talent, he plays better to his ability. Look at his performances in the U-20 world cup, and at H’veen. Sibon had one of the better years of his career late and Sulamanji is about to smash the dutch transfer record at Ajax in an attack that was propelled by MB.

To be honest, I think he’s a tad bit overrated, especially by American supporters, but he would absolutely be worth a cheap price tag. He’s also had an incredibly long year, participating with 2 different age levels of national teams and his club commitments, and he will play for the olympic squad this year. He’s tapered a bit, and when he began to falter, H’veen began to drop out of serious contention for CL spot.

Plus he’s only 20. The US plays Spain and Argentina in the next 6 days, so you can grab another look at him against top quality midfield’s. Either way he’s gonna end up at a decent club, I think it would be wise for you guys to take a chance. For the success of the US team I really hope he succeeds.
