Objection

Comments (29)

Just heard on Roger Phillips show that LCC have formally objected to the Kirkby development. Also Sefton are likely to follow suit shortly. Does anyone know what this means planning-wise? What if KMBC still approve it? Who decides if it gets called in? Can anyone shed some light on the process from now?

There's an article in the Daily Post today about the planning committee vote ? which I thought was just a recommendation for the councillors to vote on before a formal objection is lodged by the full council (but I could be wrong). That's not how David Bartlett is now reporting it ? totally the opposite of what he was trumpeting two days ago, mind!

So-called "Calling-in" is a central government action, as explained in a Liverpool Echo article today claiming that a shared stadium was "back on the drawing board", ? but of course the real story says nothing of the kind.

Then we have Dominic King claiming that Steve Clarke is "front runner for the No 2 position under Moyes", yet at the bottom of the story he says Chelseas are looking to keep him! The local newspapers in Liverpool really are absolutely attrocious. Why can't they wait until the news actually breaks, and then report the facts?

I wouldn’t take anything in the Trinity group papers as anything beyond that agreed and released by BK, usually prpoganda bullshit of the highest order.

Well Michael, there is a reason why Dominic King is at the Daily Post and not somewhere higher, he is not a journalist, he is merely someone who says what everyone else is saying.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he spends many an hour scouring the forums for a new rumour. And he’s RS too.

The Daily Post definitely states that the planning committee unanimously voted AGAINST the planning officers recommendation and Bradley and Andersen both spoke out against Kirkby. I also heard the same thing on Century FM so it looks like good news for the NO brigade. See if Sharpy mentions it on the Century phone-in at 6pm . He usually toes the official line though.

If this is the death knell day for Kirkby and next Monday is the day it’s finally "coffined" (new word) then I for one won’t be celebrating.

Relieved, yeah, because I truly think/thought (need careful tensing) that Kirkby would be disastrous.

But even if it fails it will be a hollow feeling (note, not a victory) because we’ll be back to square one for the third time in almost 12 years.

It was late summer 96 that PJ first mooted a ground move. Three plans and three votes later we’re no further on.

Depressing. So much time wasted.

The moment I hear that Kirkby is dead I’ll put the kettle on for a cup of tea and that’s about all.

Okay, maybe a hob-nob, too.

But only one. It won’t be a "two" moment.

Knowsley WILL approve the application at it’s meeting on Monday. After all, they are one of the partners in the project, so if they can’t do that, what can they do. However, the report prepared by their Planning Officers, running to 462 pages, is clear that the scheme is contrary to local and national planning regulations. They conclude, in their advice to the Committee, that the regeneration benefits outweigh the planning difficulties, and therefore the Committee should be ’minded’ to approve it.

Because of the size of the scheme (the retail part, that is), if the council is ’minded’ to approve, it must be passed to the Government Office for the North West (GONW) who will decide whether the council should be allowed to proceeed, or whether it should be ’called-in’ for a public inquiry.

In light of the objections raised, and indeed, in Knowsley’s acknowledgment that the scheme is outside of planning regs, it will be surprise if it is not called in.

Spot on David ,of course Knowsley will approve the plan but it will be an empty gesture. The government are almost certain to call in the plan and ,by projection, are almost certain to dismiss it or order a public enquiry. I would think it is squeaky bum time for Wyness and co. Tesco won’t be too bothered ,they will just go elsewhere..
Incidentally,St Helens RL have just been given permission by local planners to build a new stadium and ,guess what , a Tesco Extra. That plan has been referred to the government’s NW office but is likely to be approved.

Tesco still have the formality of applying to the OFT ( Office of Fair Trading) for permission.

This will take at least three to six months.

If it is deemed as damaging to other business’s and unfair competition they may have a tough battle to convince OFT.

I have checked and from what I can see no formal application is in place.

Any direct complaint to OFT will only prolong the process.

Tesco are controlled rigourously by OFT and any new stores where as most other supermarket chains fall under the radar.

It is not by a long way a forgone conclusion they will get permission.

Absolutely fantastic news. £78 million for this pile of crap, you must be joking. Once the dust has settled there should be an enquiry as to how much Everton FC have actually spent on this ill-fated venture, not Tesco. Once this has been concluded the present incumbents should have the good grace to just leave. On the flip side there should also be a concerted effort to ask what the fuck Liverpool Council are going to do for US now. For gods sake, lets get people in who can do a job of running our club properly, whether it be selling shirts, tickets, pies or moving grounds

Thanks very much to all the KEIOC tosspots who have resigned us to another ten years at a delapidated ground that is crumbling around our ears. The escalated costs of keeping Goodison in a state that will allow us to play there providing the health and safety certification will ultimately cripple us. Do you twats realise how much it will cost us. Any progress we have made on our beloved team over the last 3 years will be soon forgotten as we now have to maintain a graveyard and develop a new project to look for an alternative location. Warren Bradley and you LCC cronies go fuck yourselves, call yourself an Evertonian, If KEIOC means that much to you either offer us a proper location to build on or move the fucking boundary line for LCC again. KEIOC and LCC councillors Gang of pricks !!!!!

Damien Kennedy - simple question for you.

Do you think any company should be allowed to build whatever it likes wherever it likes?

If you do think that then I respect your right to hold that opinion.

If not then you agree that there has to be laws over what can be built and where.

There have to be long term plans about which towns require what amount of retail. Kirkby has been identified as a town that needs a large foodstore and a decent selection of shops on a high street.

The fact (as Yes voters keep telling us) that it is practically a part of Liverpool means that residents wanting more than that can pop into Liverpool for a wider choice of goods.

Because of this companies like Grovesnor have invested huge amounts of money in the selected regional centres. If a project of the scale of Kirkby had been proposed at the time then they may not have invested the money because some of their customers would shop at Kirkby instead (Tesco estimate 7% from Liverpool and 10% from Bootle). This makes a huge difference to the viability of schemes like Liverpool One and is why the council objected.

KEIOC lobbied hard for it to be objected to BUT it probably would have been anyway, it is simply far too big for the population.

Won’t be celebrating myself if it does get shot down as it’s just another example of how our Club cannot organise anything. Of course, Tesco are a bit steelier and don’t expect them to give up without a massive struggle.

Having said all that, Kirkby is not right for Everton. Re-building Goodison with LCC freeing up land around it or a shared arena with the RS .( 50/50 straight down the middle ) is still far better, especially in the long term.

Damien Kennedy: Please stop exaggerating. I expect your house would need some annual mainenance, but it would be a long time before it fell down. And don’t think a new stadium won’t need regular painting, maintaining etc. Those huge ’glass’screens in each corner will soon look filthy and it’d take more than Sinbad and his bucket to look afte that little lot! :)

If the move does fall through the only thing that is certain is the Liverpool council will be all empty promises like they have ALWAYS been towards us, and Bill kenwright will try to explain his incompetence away...maybe we will get distracted by a series of bogus transfer bids to get all our hopes up and distract us!!

Its bloody groundhog day! I despair of the idiots who run our great club and the equally empty doublespeak of ten-bob politicians desperate for a useless voter pleasing soundbite. In the week Moyes showed real class Bill and his crew have dragged us back into the gutter.

Harsh words Damien. Personally I’ve always assumed that KEIOC are well motivated but a bit misguided. Sorry if that sounds condescending. To me it comes down to the head and the heart argument. The heart says stay in Liverpool or redevelop Goodison but my head says that the move to Kirkby while not ideal has to be better financially. While putting it a bit crudely, I think Damien’s point is that we are going to be a worse position if we don’t move. The other point is that KEIOC & co won’t have to carry the can for any of this. Yes, I know BK & KW are at fault for everything from Kirkby to the Iraq war. Changing owners or the board, who I think are doing a good job overall, will not change the economics of the project.

ps - Gavin - Show me where BK or KW said that a Russian billionaire was about to invest. A rumour is started and then they are guilty of not living up to the rumour. WTF!
Jay Harris
17   Posted 05/06/2008 at 03:19:12

Ciaran the release of info on the Russian investor was attributed to Wyness so you cant blame Gavin for laying it at the board’s door.

It’s not the first time either remember Fortress Sports fund "The cheque will be in the bank in the morning" Kenwright but no explanation or apology except that it helped him to beat off Paul Gregg(the only commercially astute director we’ve had in the last 15 years).
Coming back to your heart and head point.
I am sure the majority of Evertonians feel the same way.We love GP and the memories but we yearn for a better place especially if the RS build the Kremlin in Stanley Park.
However an awful lot of us would not trust this board to manage this move and also did not like so many of the facets of KIrkby that were falling apart.

World class stadium
MYARSE
State of the art Transport system
BY BIKE
Virtually free
78 TO 130 MILLION MINIMUM

It’s not KEIOC who have to carry the can it is ALL evertonians who believed the bullshit and gave the mandate.

Wake up and smell the coffee and ask yourself why Moyes has not yet signed his contract.

HE DOESNT TRUST THEM EITHER.

Jay,

Fair enough about FSF. I’m not sure if BK was being malicious or what happened in the background but he shouldn’t have said anything about that til he was sure it was happening.
Russian billionaire rumour "attributed" (don’t ya love that word) to KW. Attributed by who? Can I attribute comments to whoever I want? Show me something official where he has said it.
On Kirkby :-
World Class Stadium - Jury is still out on this. I think people are morphing "medium level stadium" into cheap & crap. I don’t think that will be the case.
Transport - Fair cop. Sounds like a big issue that the club needs to address properly. Would Knowsley council be reviewing that also as part of overall planning approval.
Cost - 78M - (stadium naming rights + Goodison sale + Bellefield sale). Not free but a hell of a lot cheaper than any other alternative.

Michael is spot on: the local papers are awful. The problem is they are a monopoly, they are biased toward the council who have given them big advertising revenues. We now have two morning papers as the Echo is out well before noon, and as transfers are usually done in the day it's no good buying the Echo for today's news. The Saturday Football Pink is out at 6am in the morning and they keep putting the price up, they treat us with total contempt

Thanks Roy and Rich, Like you so eloquently say "everyone ,but everone is entiltled to their opinion" that includes me. Granted my inappropriate use of language (on coming in from the pub and discovering this wonderful news),born out of anger and frustration at 10 years of lack of progress and seeing a possible opportunity to move this club forward slip away yet again.. I apologise if my language offended anyone

Tim, my answer to you is no you should not be allowed to build anything anywhere and of course due consideration must given to the Commercial, environmental and social impacts of any new development. But do you honestly believe that with the development of the Kirkby project the growth and financial prosperity that it would provide knowley would give it the platform to attract both a greater population to the area and attract further investment in years to come. The Kirkby project is a long-term project to improve and add investment to the whole surrounding area, impacting Sefton, Liverpool and West Lancashire.

Karl, having examined the estimated costs for the maintenance of Goodison Park over the next 5 years I think you would be suprised to see just how many window cleaners you would need to employ to match this cost.!!!! So while I appreciate those Council employees and KEIOC supporters comments, if I feel the need to sound off after a pint to other blues I will.

Gavin to be fair the first time I heard of the Russian Billionairre bulshit was an interview on the radio with Brian Reade and someone from KEIOC, no Fat Keith.

Karl, how can you possibly construe being shafted by LCC and Sefton council with their complaints mismanagement bythe board?

Yes they have embelished the figures with the costs... some say lied but the fact that this project may fail has nothing to do with the board but everything to the spoilt kid attitude of the supposed Evertonian Bradley and his pals in the council.

He complains, Kirkby goes away and then Bradley slimes away and offers no help whatsoever in any plan B we may have, I mean he has scuppered our supposedly only plan now.

I never liked the idea of Kirkby but I saw it for what it was, the seemingly only viable and affordable opportunity to move this club into the 21st Century but now the dummies have been spat out and left us with nothing for the foreseeable future.

Greg Murphy - I think you summed it up perfectly mate, though I’ll probably eat a whole packet if this move is scuppered.
Relief tinged with frustration & the daunting realisation that we need to come up with a viable solution asap.
Hopefully we can all move on together and this will see an end to some of the division & vitreol that has been all too prevalent between Evertonians over this.
I can’t beleive the vile abuse that’s been spouted to fellow fans over this issue.
I only use that sort of language for those who deserve it like ’ Clottenburg’ & ’ the fat Spanish waiter’ etc

25   Posted 05/06/2008 at 13:32:01

Just because two councils have opposed it does not mean it’s dead. The opposition simple smacks of protectionism and keeping Kirkby small and in its place. If the government see it in that light they may simple ignore the objections because of the benefits of new jobs etc. for a very deprived area.
Karl Masters
26   Posted 05/06/2008 at 18:12:09

Tony Williams: Think you have misunderstood my point a bit. It?s incompetence ( or lies - you choose ) to tell everybody we will be able to gain extra revenue from concerts without being certain that is the case.

It has nothing to do with being shafted by other councils. Of course, you could argue that it is also somewhat incompetent to expect to be able to transplant an enormous shopping centre of 70,000 sq m ( that?s approximately 10 times the size of the pitch at Goodison to give it a bit of context ) and a large football stadium in to a small town without the surrounding councils objecting to it!

Either KW is incompetent or he?s naive or maybe he?s so arrogant as to think he can fib to all concerned and get away with it? Who knows, but either way this whole episode, whatever the outcome, has been handled extremely badly.

GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS BANKRUPT CITY

Not as catchy as KEIOC but at least based on fact. Shafted by the Liverpool FC City Council once more. I worked for a similar bunch of shisters for 20 years until I realised that I needed to go to somewhere where I may be appreciated. Obviously Liverpool FC City Council doe not have the best interests of EFC at heart after all.

In fairness to David Bartlett, his story yesterday that ToffeeWeb castigates him for is correct. The article was (if you read it) based on quotes from spoilt bast... sorry, Steve Broomhead, from the RDA. Nothing in his article is incorrect as far as we can tell from the outside.

The difficult part of it is the headline. For those of you that don't know how newspapers work, the journalists write the articles and the sub-editors write the headlines. These are then passed by news editor and ultimately the editor.

I suggest you owe David (or Nick as you call him) an apology. He stood his story up with real quotes. If they aint real then spoilt bast...Broomhead et al will see Trinity Mirror in court. The papers are there to report on what happens (as KEIOC know very well) they don't make stuff up as they go along - unless its about Iraq. The Post (and Echo) have been most accommodating to the anti-Kirkby supporters.

COYB, nil satis nisi optimum, Kirkby? No thanks.
