Whay are the media so against Everton?

I have just been reading an article about Euro 2008 in next week's Radio Times (sad I know but I don't get out much nowadays). To those who have not seen the feature, it contains pen pictures of the 16 competing teams written by some nameless hack(s). Each team has notes in the following sections:
1. How does their strip score?
2. Who's their Beckham?
3. Who's their Rooney?
4. Name to master.
5. British connection.
6. In a nutshell.
Obviously these categories reveal the paucity of brain cells in the production team but it is the gratuitous mocking of Everton that I object to. For no reason that I can fathom, the British connection section for Italy contains the following;'Right-back Christian Panucci played eight games for Chelsea in 2000/2001, while Marco Materazzi once slummed it at Everton.'
Throughout the article, 16 teams (including Everton) are mentioned in the British connection sections, yet it is only Everton who attracts negative comments. To show the ignorance of the authors, they even say that Slaven Bilic was, ansd still is, a cult hero at former clubs West Ham and Everton. Only supporters on Incapacity Benefit would remember our Croatian Lawyer as a cult hero.

The only conclusion I can come to Brian is that the majority of twats who write this drivel are Red Shite and seize anything to denigrate Everton at every opportunity
I don?t read the Radio Times but I can say that the BBC sports coverage via their website has always seemed to jump on any slightly negative news regarding Everton and blow it out of all proportion. So a player we were loosely linked with and signs for another club becomes "Joe Bloggs snubs Everton move" or a 2-0 defeat becomes ?Everton battered at x club?. Conversely, if we hammer a side 7-0 you will need to go scratching around for the match report rather than it being on the front page (and also have to wait right till the end of Match of the Day). You can then go onto Five Live?s coverage and that complete twat Alan Green who should never have been allowed to commentate on an Everton game again after those absurd and ludricous Rocky comments
For some reason their seems to be a vested interest in maintaining the status quo at the top of the league. I?m happy for us to go about our business quietly. We?ve managed to start knocking on the door of the Champions League places and I would fucking love it if the media were forced to start paying us the appropriate attention. Then again, just look back to Alan Green?s comments vis-a-vis our performance against Villareal and Bucharest, Couldn?t fucking wait for us to trip up and criticise. Call me paranoid if you like but Alex Ferguson once said that the BBC were ?Liverpool supporters with Liverpool supporters badges? and I would not disagree one bit!

I don’t really care what spineless journalists say about our great club. Most Journalists nowdays only suck up too the Sky 4 anyway. We the fans our the only ones who know how good this club is nobody else matters.

Shite like this should be addressed by the club and a public apology and withdrawal of the inflammatory statements made. The other thing to bear in mind is if you think a publication is biased then stop buying it and ask your friends and family to stop buying it too.

Brian, I agree with you entirely. I am from Belfast and heard Alan Greene long before he went to 5live. At one time I thought he was an impartial, fearless. broadcaster. However, in recent years and last season in particular I have heard commentaries from him in which he just oozes contempt for Everton. Does anyone know why this should be?
Unfortunately, David, what outsiders think does matter. The reputation of club can be tarnished by constant negative, unjustified, biased comment.

1. How does their strip score? ... asks sad sub who plays his football on Play Station.
2. Who’s their Beckham? Big name, Beckham. RT readers might have heard of him.
3. Who’s their Rooney? Another person RT readers might have heard of. Not exactly our reader profile, though.
4. Name to master. Ha ha. Foreign names - make you chuckle, don’t they? Memo to John Motson.
5. British connection. Can’t wait till MOTD starts again.
6. In a nutshell. Page filler that Shoot would be ashamed to print

If you grew up like I did believing that the BBC was always right, it took a long time to realise that they weren’t neutral or even balanced. More recently many of their producers have been shown to be dishonest to the point of corruption. I wonder how much ’hospitality’ these people take as they go from ground to ground? The appalling Green would, of course, shout for the shite for nothing.
Never forget that we are paying their wages through the licence fee, and take every opportunity to complain through their websites. Emails to your MP will be forwarded. The Greenshite has even made it to a letter in the Guardian complaining about his bias.

Anthony, you refer to Alan Green as a complete twat. Are you responsible for the graffiti in Belfast? Anyway, calling him that will only be a badge of honour for him. Truth is he was a decent journalist who decided to sacrifice integrity for notoriety.
Paul, yeah times are hard, but honest to God, listen to this man and tell me he doesn?t make you angry.

If you wonder why he oozes so much contempt for Everton it is because he supports the red shite. Because he had his wrists slapped after the Rocky comments there has been a ?toning? down of his belittling and disparaging comments about our club but the resentment (for whatever reason) still bubbles on the surface.

I?ve said it before and i?ll say it again. Why do people use this website to slag off Alan Green? There are many many important issues surrounding the Blues at the moment and that self publicising gobshite isn?t one of them.
Anthony Newell
Posted 05/06/2008 at 22:50:11
Rob, Green for whatever reason hates Everton FC with a passion and if from time to time people want to vent their spleen about that where else would you like them to do it? The subject of bias was brought up by the original poster so Alan Green was a natural follow on from that
Andy Crooks
Posted 05/06/2008 at 22:51:36
Fair enough Rob. "Self-publicising gobshite" are suitable and and appropriate final words on the subject of Alan Green.

It’s the job of Ian Ross to bring these ignoramuses to task.
He did a good job getting Mourinho to apologise for calling AJ a cheat and rightly putting Benitez in his place after the last derby.
If he wasn’t tied up with soundbites about Kirkby he could be dealing with these articles.

Another slight against us appeared in the Daily Mail today commenting on our approach for Aaron Ramsey. " It is unlikely he (Ramsey) will make a decision until next week after Everton scraped together the money despite continuing uncertainty over how much Moyes will be able to spend this summer." WTF is that about?

Whilst I agree, you know what, in truth I couldn?t give a flying fuck what anyone says. I?ve supported Everton since I was old enough to claim to have common sense and to be honest if people don?t understand what sort of club it is and what being a supporter of Everton means then more fool them. It?s true that this club is in my heart and soul. It means more than so many things. As long as I have the same feeling when I go to Goodison, when i hear Z-cars, when we score, then I don?t care who says what. Anyone who dares claim otherwise just doesn?t get it. And to be honest, doesn?t deserve it.

I prefer Everton to be slagged off by the media, why does it matter that we are not generally liked? I would HATE to be one of the ’loved’ clubs - why do we want them to like us, or respect us! Being discriminated against is only a bad thing if your a living, breathing human being. Everton is a football club, why should it matter what is printed sub-standard media, or national media for that matter.
Disrespect shown towards Everton football club should affect nobody, including the fans and club. And for what is said in Shoot, Daily Mail, or the Radio Times - who cares! Even the people posting messages about caring, I don’t actually think you do!
How very, very boring it would be to be liked by the media!

It annoys me when Gazza is mentioned for whatever reason and they run down the list of his clubs... Ok, lets see now... Newcastle - check. Spurs - check. Lazio, of course - check, then to Rangers - check, ’Boro - check... Hmmm someone else should be next, can’t think who, they haven’t placed it.
Honestly, its enough to make a Burnley supporter weep!

I did read once Phil Neville say that the negative press and lackluster media attention Everton get is what spurs them on. I?m guessing seen as most of the RT is writen in London most of its writers are part of the prawn sandwich brigade who support Man U or whoever is winning that month. I actually love the fact everyone underestimates us, I think it can give us an edge against any team who thinks they will get an easy ride against us. COYB

They put us down because we are a real threat to their topfouropoly. Everton is the only team that has managed to break that stranglehold in recent years so it’s natural to belittle us. If we were a team like ’plucky Fulham’ or ’sleeping giants Newcastle’, they could afford to be a bit more generous because they are in effect, just patronising those teams and their supporters.
Spurs keep threatening, at least on paper but because they’re a London team they’ll have a lot of support within hacksville itself so can’t say too much about them can they.,
Everton are from the scally scouse northern wasteland, poor relation to the mighty but so, so tragic ’Poo that we are bound to get the backlash. I’d rather things the way they are than have them drooling over us, patronising the hell out of us and generally brown nosing around Everton.
As for that nob Green - ever heard of the ’off’ button? I’m in the process of getting rid of Sky for Freeview - vote with your wallets and your ’ (fuck ) off ’ button!

Nick, I agree somewhat with you as I felt the same about it when I read an article about Gazza this week and Everton and Burnley were the only teams not mentioned.
But on the other hand I have to be fair - Gazza didn’t really set the world alight at Goodison did he?

Hey Erik, wasn’t there one glorious game against Oldham, yes the mighty Oldham, which was Gazza circa 1990? Better than Ginola though haha.

To David Jones the author of;
’Even the people posting messages about caring, I don’t actually think you do!’
I hope that you are not including myself in that comment. My concern is not that Everton are not shown the respect that the fourth most successful English side merits but that we are the only British Club side that is shown disrespect in the article in question. There is a world of difference between those two states.
Perhaps David you could justify your dismissive remark about fellow Evertonians and explain how you have come to your jaundiced conclusion. I don’t demand fairer and better judgement from a fellow Blue but somehow I just expect it.
Finally, I will bet that the author of the article is not a supporter of Manchester United. The only Club that has agents posted in every arm of the media is the RS and this piece of journalistic poison is almost certainly the work of the dark side........nothing at all to do with the prawn sandwich brigade.

Ignore it, rise above it, we are better than this. Don’t fall into the media traps and we won’t be called "Bitter Blues." Just remember we finished 5th this season. That means there are 15 other teams who wish they could swop places with us.

Stop whinging FFS. It really pisses me off when I hear and read about Evertonians complaining about the lack of, or negative coverage EFC receive from the media. Every time I listen to a national football phone in, all I ever hear is our supporters moaning about this, that or other, and to be honest its fucking cringeworthy. Because of this, we are now getting a reputation like those sad bastards from across the park. Just accept that we get a no worse press than anyone else, its just seems as if we do, due to an inferiority complex most of you seem to have

Whenever I see such negativity towards us ( frequently ) , I always think of the song that used to be sung in the St. End in the seventies.
" The Blue Boys are coming up the hill again.
They all laugh at us,they all mock us , they all say our days are numbered.
Born to be Scouse and victorious are we . If your’e gonna win the cup then you’d better hurry up, cause we’re Eveton FC ".
It gives me goosebumps to just say the words to myself.

It’s funny to read all the complaints about how Everton are badly treated in the media, followed by a fan writing in to complain about their negative attitude. Then our fans come on and say how great our club is etc etc. Next thing the fans are slagging off the club over the stadium issue, poor merchandising, crap CEO, crap Board of Directors, Crap chairman, pathetic PR and loads of other stuff. Maybe some of the shit written on sites like this gets noticed by the media and they just continue in the same vain. Maybe a more positive attitude by the fans on the everyday running of the club would help improve our percived image to the media and therefore write in a more positive way.

Fellow blues doo not worry about the media they are just upset that Everton keeps proving them wrong most times.
In this "CASH IS KING" league we have shocked everybody by claiming 5th and becomming the best of the rest and now fellow evertonions lets see how Davey Moyes takes us next season.

Brian Finnigan,
You are almost certainly in the minority of minorities if you are genuinely upset about the Radio Times’ had to say about us!
And I came to that conclusion, by imagining myself asking random Evertonians swarming the outside of Goodison Park,
"Would you be bothered if a publication, with a target audience for a 50 year old woman, such as the Radio Times wrote a negative comment about Everton, specifically refering to Marco Materazzi’s time at Everton". I think I would troubled finding anyone who cared WHAT-SO-EVER.
"...not a supporter of Manchester United. The only Club that has agents posted in every arm of the media". What a ridiculous comment.

Brian, no need to apologise mate.
You have every right to write what you feel on a topic about Everton and no-one else should say different. I mean look at all the various pieces on Kirkby from every possible point of view and with more to come.
I personally don’t give a toss what Radio Times writes about us because a) I don’t buy it and b) What do they know anyway?.
Good point also by Anthony above too, it’s why us fickle fans make football so interesting. We are fine to slate our club, players, managers and board off as much as we want but the second an outsider says something slightly dodgy against us, we all come together to defend our now "fantastic" club.
