Owen to Everton.

Comments (29)

I have just received two text messages stating that EFC are looking at making a bid between £3-5 milliion for Owen. One was from a customer in the North East the other was from a Chelsea Fan in London. Any idea why both on the same day? I can't find any articles on the web?? COYB

I’ve heard the whispers too Alan, I covered it a while back on my website.

http://www.everton.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=111143

Not sure what to make of it, I think he’d be a good signing but he’s not a priority.

The price you are quoting there would be a good bit of business, but its all just whispers at the moment, nothing concrete.

3-5 million for Owen? Not a chance we’d get him for that.

Personally I don’t want him. I don’t think he’d suit the Yak and I don’t think he’s hungry enough anymore. He prefers to play for England than his club teams.

I also feel Yakubu needs someone pacy and mobile alongside him. Owen doesn’t give you that anymore. He completely changed his game and drops off alot more. Not for me to be honest.

I’d rather go in for someone like Darren Bent. Younger, quicker and can score goals. If that doesn’t happen then hopefully one of AJ or Vaughan will step up.

Living as an exile in the North-East (nice place, though), I hear from my Toon Army colleagues all the time - and their views on Owen are clear - He craves going back to the RS - but when he’s fully fit - he’s a handful who adds to the team - but he needs a creative midfield to feed him. At the ridiculous price quoted in the post, he seems a bargain, even with his injury worries - but surely his wage demands are beyond us and they would disrupt the apparent harmony inside the dressing room.

Let’s face it - if he get our creative midfiled this summer, then Yak, AJ, Vaughan etc. will benefit, so why the hell do we need a RS-at heart? Forget attacking changes - we need to boost our midfield, and I’ll be looking at Arshavin over the next few weeks and hope he under-performs to keep the price down!

Connor,

Darren Bent, like Owen is on a £90,000 a week contract, something we are unfortunatly unable to match. The main area of strengthening needs to be the midfield, a strong young replacement for Carsley, not Tom Huddlestone, and a creative attacking midfielder, and not Steven Hunt. I dont think Moyes will be too worried about signing a striker in the summer, as Vaughan will be first choice to partner the Yak if he manages to stay injury free. However, Moyes may consider selling AJ, and then we would need a new striker. I personally would go for Javier Saviola. Small pacy striker who is out of favour, and would not command a big transfer fee or wages.

Isn’t he an Evertonian though. His dad played for Everton and he was a die-hard Everton supporter. Just because he played for RS doesnt mean that he wouldn’t still be an Evertonian now, does it? But its all academic anyway as John says we simply could not afford his wages. I think that we should try and get Scott McDonald from Celtic as his wages would certainly fit in the Everton structure and he can score goals.

John Murphy, I think Darren Bent is more likely to take a wage cut than Michael Owen. Bent still has alot to prove and if he wants first team football I’m sure he’d drop his wages.

Personally I’d like to see him here. He’s scored alot of goals for Charlton in his first two seasons and in 15 games for Spurs he’s scored 8 goals which is a decent record. Someone like Bent would compliment Yakubu. He’s got AJ’s pace but he’s stronger and a better finisher. I think he’d be a good signing although I doubt we’ll go in for him.

Owen would demand 90 grand a week wherever he played. He wouln’t take a wage cut to join Everton, its just not his style. Saying all this though I don’t think a striker is priority.

I think we need two centre midfielders or maybe even three. A defensive midfielder, a box to box midfielder and a deep lying play maker. We fine in attacking midfield. We have Osman, Arteta and Cahill who can all play there.

Owen is a total waste of time money and effort. The man is finished.

Darren Bent is the biggest waste of space I have ever met, having previously lived in Ipswich I was lucky (very lucky in fact) to meet his ex girlfriend who told me several stories about him. Incidently his ’mates’ all think he is a big time charlie too.

I’d rather we signed the frenchie Bafetimi Gomis...

He’s a complete waste of money, glass ankled midget who turned us down once to chase the dollar from Skunk Utd, let him rot up there or anywhere else willing to pay his stupid wages for a one trick pony who was finished when he came back to Engerland

I’ve no idea whether or not Moyes is interested in getting Owen, still less what his wage demands might be and equally little what his impact on the dressing room could be. Nor does anyone else on this thread.

I do think there’s a lot of footstamping and judgementalism about a bloke who seems to be pretty decent in his relationships with others and who sets out to do a decent job.

When I’ve seen Owen play for Newcastle he has looked impressive at times, but he’s WAAAAAY too injury prone. As for Bent, he hasn’t impressed anyone at White Hart Lane.

John, who says Darren Bent is on 90 grand a week?? It makes my skin crawl when people just throw nonsense comments like that in and pass them off as fact. Given that the recent Deloitte figures didn’t put Spurs wage bill that far ahead of ours I think it is HIGHLY unlikely that anyone at Spurs is on that kind of money and certainly not Darren Bent.

He’d be a great signing that would raise our profile and add that extra quality as we chase 4th spot. If we get him I’d sell AJ, who just doesn’t score enough goals for all his hard work...

Mind you, one upside would be a death to the constant harping by Hansen and co that England need a fit Michael Owen. If he joined us, his name would soon drop off their radar.

I have a bit of insider knowledge myself, and I?m told AJ to West Ham for £8m, Owen in for £7m, we?re only offering 60k a week but due to the fact he still lives in Cheshire and has to take a helicopter to training everyday he?s likely to accept our offer due to the convienience of living in the area.

Just in case this is one of those stories floated by the club/ an agent/or Owen to gauge the fans reaction, let me just say : Michael I know you are now desperate to get away from Newcastle & that gibbering nutter Keegan but Moyes gave you a chance before you joined them & you turned us down without a second thought , ?Everton are not in my plans? wasn?t it ?
Well the world & Everton have moved on and quite frankly no one?s that interested in you anymore.
Enjoy another season of underacheivment with that BIG club you joined.
To paraphrase your boss ? I?d love it, just love it if you stayed there & didn?t join us.'

Michael Owen is finished as a footballer - his sights are now on being a race horse trainer. Only desperate clubs chasing an impossible dream, like the club he’s at now, sign people like this. He’s too small, too slow, too injury prone and too fat on past ’glories’. Not an Everton signing.

I live near Owen and he's hardly Mr Popular here... not a nice man and not someone worthy of wearing the blue and white of Everton.

Its not impossible, and could have benefits, but taking on Owen has a big whiff of Gazza/Ginola about it. I can’t read DM’s mind, but I guess that he would have to get a very, very good deal from the North Walian’s people to take him on. Very unlikely, I would say.

(And yes, he would probably be happy commuting from Hawarden to us, even if would much prefer to be with the Shite - but could the wage cut support his bookie?)

As for Mr Bent - DM got just about everything humanly possible out of the last version. And Darren has still got a lot to prove, so such a signing could make sense. Again, at what cost? And, more importantly, there’s nothing at all to suggest that this is on the agenda, is there?

There’s no doubting that ickle Michael has potential. My worry is that this man genuinely thinks that he’s too good for anyone other than the current top four teams. Funnily, none of those teams seem remotely interested in him. Regardless of my feelings for Newcastle (I can’t stand the club), Owen has treated them with some disdain, which bothers me. The club broke the bank and saved him from his Madrid nightmare, yet Owen shows so little respect back. How many skanky Geordies have had to dig deep into their pockets to subsidise the lifestyle of this dull little man? Quite a lot of them, I think! Let him rot up in Geordie land before eventually securing a free transfer to Portsmouth, West Ham or similar.

I am going off recent pictures that were posted on an Everton forum of the highest payed players in world football. I have tried to find the link but couldnt so I typed it in on google and managed to find the same link off an Aston Villa forum. http://www.astonvilla.vitalfootball.co.uk/forum/photos/get-photo.asp?photoid=159

I have been doing some checking on this and Owen is in the last year of this contract at Newcastle. Technically he can buy himself out or Newcastle can take a lower bid of around 6 million. EFC will not pay the weekly wages but are happy to increase on a bonus option goals, appearance etc. AJ would make way and the difference in his fee would be offset on to Owen. You may all think he is finished but his Premiership games to goal ratio is excellent, put that next to the Yak?s goals then EFC have the potential of a 40 goal partnership. If fit, this would be excellent, less face facts with Man City offering silly money like they are we are going to be pushed to get any big names. This move to me suits both the player and the club, I have a good feeling my mate from the North East knows what he is talking about?????? COYB

There is not a cat in hells chance of this happening. Just the same as Fowler would never have signed for us regardless of how many times we supposedly had contact with him in the last four years. Owen will not be coming to Everton and certainly not for £3 million, I just dont know who is gullable enough to believe that any England international will be sold for anything lower than £10 million. It seems that all England players are now vastly overpriced and it makes you wonder how much Steve Stone would actually cost in todays market, after all he did play a handful of games for England.

If Owen brings goals and can stay fit, then he is worth consideration at least.

Regarding the finance side; I heard a rumor he would be available for around £5m and that Umbro (do they still sponsor him?) would make up the deficit in his pay packet if he came here (although I can’t think why that would want to do that)

Owen is fuckin’ finished.

Liverpool would have had him back when he went to the barcodes if he was any use.

Just delete those texts, and the numbers that they came from.

This is what you get from reading red tops and believing them, did you not watch the last game of the season? He was virtually a midfielder and shite, utter shite, his goals to games ratio is fucking hilarious as he didnt play for 18 months
