We're as good as them

Comments (44)

I honestly think we have a good chance of going for 4th place next season. It seems as though Arsenal are wobbling and Liverpool are, well they only have 3 good players which hardly makes a team.

To state that our goalkeeper and defence (including strength in depth) are both vastly superior to either of those teams should be a given ? I can only think of Sagna who is better than Hibbert.. I am also going to go out on a limb and say that Yakubu is as good as Torres IF we feed him correctly ? in my mind (and many Arsenal fans) Adebayor misses loads. I would also say that Cahill as support forward is also better than what the other two have.

Pienaar and Arteta also have no equals so as seems relatively obvious we must strengthen the centre midfield which is a crucial area of the pitch. Where Arsenal have Fabregas and Liverpool have Gerrard and Mascherano we have no-one of this level. The only players we have been linked with who have any hope of being close to these players anytime soon would be Cana, Fernandes and Huddlestone.

Cana ? Awesome tackler and a fantastic leader on the pitch. The guy is simply awesome for Marseille.

Fernandes ? When fully fit has the ability to run games (I think he can be of similar quality to Fabregas)

Huddlestone ? How often do you see Andrea Pirlo bombing around like a madman? This guy can feed the Yak.

Who have we been linked with that could come in and over the season hit the levels of Gerrard/Mascherano and Fabregas?

Lescott is the only player in our back line who would maybe get a look in at Arsenal..

Behave yourself.

I’ll have some of what you’ve been drinking.

The only reason we get near the top 4 is team work not quality of players.

You summed it up for me when you mention Cana as an awesome tackler.
IMO he would get sent off every other week in the prem.He is always late in the tackle and has got a nasty temper. He is a continental "Robbie Savage".

As for Huddlestone if Ramos who is a fitness fanatic of a coach cant get him motivated what chance have we got.

Fernandes I do totally agree - Class player but we may procrastinate again and lose him.

I agree with some of what you say in regards to our defence. but to say Arteta and Pienaar would get in the arsenal midfield is off the mark IMO.

What we've got that I don't think either of those teams have is a squad who all want to work for each other, as opposed to hitting 70-yard passes to make themselves look good.

Where we lack is when we resort to hoofball if things aren't going our way, and the belief that we're as good as those teams.

I think someone in the middle who leads by example and can pass through defence rather than in front of it could tip the balance in our favour.

I think Yobo would walk into the Arsenal back 4 aswell Ciarán.

I agree Arsenal are wobbling and Liverpool are not as strong as they think they are.

We are more than capable of moving into the top 3 or 4 next season.

I agree Cana is a great defensive midfielder, although is a bit of a rampaging bull and could see him getting carded alot.

We need a some pace out wide, a DM and another creative midfielder, add a striker and maybe some squad players and top 4 here we come.

I think there are some blue tinted glasses there so say the least.

We are nowhere near Arsenal.

Torres is a much better player than Yak... pains me to say it though!

I think that we do have a very realistic chance of getting in to the top 4 IF we sign a defensive midfielder, an attacking midfielder and a first class striker who is better than Yak. Yak is good, but we need to improve were we are and class is needed. Whether we have money to buy class is a different matter altogether.

I often think about comparing us to Liverpool and Arsenal, but there are just too many ifs. For example, if we had Gerrard and Torres, we would be better than them. Thing is, that?s about £50 million worth of talent at least. With Arsenal, they just have TOO MANY good players. Even their shit players are good. Our shit players really are shit and only our best players are as good as their entire first team. We?re still a long way off.
Alan Rodgers
9   Posted 09/06/2008 at 16:36:21

Put it this way - our most saleable player is Lescott who could step into any of the top 4 teams. He is followed quite a way behind by Yakubu who, despite his prolific scoring record, would only interest teams outside the top 4. Cahill and Howard maybe. After that I?m struggling. We have a team of good players I ?m happy to say but most of them wouldn?t get in Arsenal Reserves.
Mark Cassin
10   Posted 09/06/2008 at 16:45:22

@Jay Harris--to compare Cana to Robbie Savage is ridiculous, have you ever seen him play? However I do think Cana would be carded as much as Vieira in his first season, saying that though he wasn’t so bad was he?

IMO Lescott is better than anything those two sides have got and Yobo is at a minimum the equal of Toure.

I think that Yakubu is a better player than Torres as he finishes his chances equally as good and is far stronger than Torres the diver. Difference is that Torres gets the ball to feet from Gerrard.

We just need to find equally good centre midfielders--only the 3 I mentioned have the potential to be as good. Are there any others I’m missing who we have been linked with?

As an aside, who from Liverpool/Arsenal could get past Baines/Lescott or Yobo in a first eleven?

12   Posted 09/06/2008 at 16:54:01

I think the key point about Liverpools defence is that their midfield with Mascherano and Gerrard can hold the ball and prevent attacks going straight to the defence. We have only had Carsley who could do that and no midfield general.

Cana would be the equivalent of Mascherano/Flamini but how about the X-factor players such as Gerrard or Fabregas? We need some!!

At times last season we were playing like Arsenal with a full team which includes a weak centre midfield. Any improvement there would, I believe see us improve to a sufficient level to compete.

Remember watching Spain vs Portugal U21’s in the tournament that Bentley wimped out of. Fernandes had Fabregas all over the place in that game, was awesome to watch, in my view it is very important that we keep Manny, towards the end of the season he was improving with each game, and the Newcastle game he was immense. Part of me keeps thinking that if he’d scored in that game in which he came very close, we would have gone all out to snap him up. C’mon Moysey, sign him up what a talent!!!

For the lads who reckon I?ve been drinking (not today:)

A- Other than centre midfield name better players that they have please.

B- If we had a similar player to Fabregas/Gerrard plus a defensive midfielder we would already be on a par with them.

Howard
Sagna--Yobo-Lescott-Baines
Gerrard-Mascherano-Fabregas-Arteta
Torres-Yakubu

Bench-Reina-Jagielka-Clichy-Carragher-Alonso-Pienaar-Adebayor

Thats 6 players in the first eleven and 8 in the squad. Comments always welcome :)

Fernandes IMO would be a great move as others have stated though I think we should buy him outright which would settle him..

Clinchy is better than Baines, Toure is very similar to Yobo but has far better distribution, Lescott is better than Gallas and Sagna is three times the player of Nevill. Only Lescott and Howard would be guaranteed starters at the back.

In midfield only Arteta springs to mind. I think he’s better than Rosicky. Other than that no one. Hleb’s better than Pienaar, Cahill wouldn’t have a hope in hell unless they played 4-5-1 which they don’t and Osman wouldn’t even make there bench.

Fernandes could potentially but even then he would be compeiting against Fabregas who is a better player with more potential. If he improved his defensive qualities then maybe.

Liverpool are a different matter. I could see Arteta, Pienaar, Lescott, Baines and Fernandes all getting in. Fernandes for Alonso, Arteta for Kuyt, Baines for Aurelio and Lescott for Carragher/Hyppia. Cahill and Yakubu would miss out because Torres and Gerrard are better than them.

Like most on here i am a bitter blue but even i had to laugh at this posting. One of our problems is over estimating the brilliance of at lot of our players, What makes us strong is teamwork. Lescott is the only player that would guarantee a place in Arsenal or Liverpools team, Ask any liverpool or arsenal fan would they swap Yobo for Skyrttle, Agger, Gallas, Toure or Carragher and none would accept it, Clichy is better than Baines, Sagna is a far superior right back, As for out midfield the Arteta of 2 seasons ago possibly and Cahill in 451 possibly.
As for Yakubua being the equal of Torres i wish, Torres sadly is the best striker in the world right now.
Stop living in dreamland the only way we have a chance of getting into the top 4 is if Arsenal or the shite play poorly, we are the best of the rest right now.

Mark, if we are just as good as the shite and Arsenal, why did Arsenal finish 18pts ahead of us? and that was 18pts ahead, and them having an average season by their standards. Also the shite, they finished 11pts ahead, and wasn’t we at one time 5pts ahead of them? And the shite were this season, well shite. As I said mate we are miles behind them, and I can’t see us getting any closer in the near future. And that’s not being negative, just realistic.

The glorious TEAM of 1985 had exactly how many outstanding individuals? The merits of a football team are surely measured by the effectiveness of it’s component parts when applied together, rather than the individuals contained therein. Which, therefore, gives us a great chance of breaking into the Sky 4 next season!Hopefully at the expense of the superstar RS!

On yer Mark! Ignore the negative sods. A brief scan of your critics reveals most of them have spent the last year desperately seeking everything and anything to rubbish our club.
According to them our players are useless, the board are crooks, the manager is a dithering tactical flop, Catering is the pits, the promotional side of things is crap and don’t get me started on their many totally impractible alternatives to Kirkby.
I am not accusing anyone of not being a true Evertonian yet some of these characters do have me wondering.

@Michael-- I think a posting which compares the current playing staffs of the teams finishing 3rd 4th and 5th is rather interesting as it underlines the divided opinions on the areas of quality in the various teams.

To be honest I have played Football manager (FM??) though do often muse about where we would be with a potential Fabregas (Ramsey) Gerrard (Lucho/Johnson) and a Mascherano (Cana).

I think the point I am making regarding our goalkeeper and defence (other than rb) is fair along with Yakubu (currently the highest goalscorer in PL since arriving). The real issue is the central midfield of each of the 3 sides--I think its fair to say that ours is by far the weakest and this is obviously an area to improve this summer.

@James McCarthy--Well we can read all the negative comments from Tony Marsh etc etc etc but as you say whenever someone puts a positive spin on things then it’s suddenly more doom and gloom!

Incidently I haven’t been watching the Euros as I’ve moved apartments recently and haven’t got satellite in yet--if anyone knows a good website to watch from then please let me know!

Erm, if we are ?as good (or even better) than them?, how come we finished miles behind both this season? And last season. And the season before. And ... You get the picture.

Also, if our goalkeeper and defenders are so much better than theirs, how come we conceded more goals than both last season? And the season before. And .... you get the picture.

And don?t say it?s down to style of football, cos both of them scored far more than us as well.

In summary, it seems the facts simply don?t back up your ridiculous argument.

Give it a rest lad, it?s embarrassing.

So that’s the same Arsenal who have just signed Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff. To quote the bbc site:-

"The Caerphilly-born playmaker met Everton boss David Moyes before being flown out on a private jet to Basel on Saturday to meet with Wenger, who has now beaten his old rival Ferguson to landing Ramsey".

I doubt that we could fund a private jet !!

We’ll pick up whatever small fishes that escape the big corporate nets. We don’t shop at Harrods, we shop at Tesco. We’ll do okay by the way, feeding off the errors and inefficiencies of the other 15 teams in the prem. As long as we keep running ourselves to the ground. All 11 players playing as one, no star players, no individuality. It won’t look pretty (the football and players, depending on how you look at it) but the points will add up next May 2009.

Isn’t that what matters?

Lighten up, dude !! It’s called IRONY. Just imagine if you were a young impressionable kid and you meet Moyes and then are whisked off on a private jet to Switzerland to meet Wenger at the European Championships where most of Europe’s top players are involved. Even before any wages are mentioned you’d be impressed and then you have a successful manager from a high profile London club with credible recent history - well a young kid’s head would be spinning !! As Ramsey was born in December 1990 he’s only know post-Sky football. Since that time we have won one FA cup and Arsenal have won four FA cups, four Premiership titles, one league cup and numerous runners up. Plus he wasn’t going to be loaned back to Cardiff as suggested in the Manchester Utd offer.
Still it will all come good when we move to Kirkby !!

This is quite hilarious, which is well timed due to the sickening absence of England in the Euros.

There is some semblance of truth in that we aren’t massively behind Liverpool in terms of the teams last year. But we did fall well short when the chips were down at the end of the season.

With the right 3 or 4 signings this year I can see us being in with a chance of 4th spot next year. I just don’t see Liverpool improving whilst that Spanish gobshite is in charge.

And to be fair to Mark, apart from Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano, I wouldn’t say that any of their players are of a different class to our best 11. But that’s the problem, they’ve probably got 16/18 players that are as good as our best 11...... we went tits up when Pienaar, Arteta, Vaughan and Cahill were out.

Let’s hope that Moyes can bring in the players to give it a go next year.

I believe if we get Fernandes back and Mouthino or the big nigerian lad Richard Eromoigbe that will set us up nicely an with one or two squad additions we could seriously challenge the top 4.
