Arshavin or bust?

Comments (40)

A purely hypothetical question, but considering that it is widely rumoured we only have £20mill to spend, and Arshavin's price tag seems to have risen from £8m to £18m, should we put all our eggs in one basket and just try to sign one outstanding player rather than 3 or 4 average players?

As good as he is — and I honestly believe he would have the kind of impact that Rooney should have done had he not defected so early in his career — he is still just one player, always one match away from a potential long-term injury.

If last season taught us anything it's that we need more depth to our squad — we struggled without Cahill and lost our key attacking midfield element in the form of Pienaar at a crucial juncture in the campaign — but, of course, the key is not to buy 3 to 4 average players but pick up real quality for as little outlay as possible. Maybe it's 3 quality players instead of one £18m player... who knows. Right now, I'd settle for just knowing Moyes is going to stick around and that he will have money to spend this summer for starters.

I’d rather buy three of four good players than one world class player. Four midfielders would do me. Carsley’s replacement, Fernandes, a winger with pace and a jack of all trades.

We definatly need to sort the centre midfield out as its been ages since we actually had a half decent one. Carsley, Gravesen and Cahill was our last good combination and that only last 6-8 months.

A natural dictator is needed. Someone like Fernandes or even Huddlestone who can put there foot on the ball and dictate when we have possession. Alongside him we need a defensive midfielder.

I’d be happy if could squeeze in Arshavin AND Fernandes somehow.. and that was it.

Injured players like Cahill and Vaughny would finally be back and we’d be looking great again.

Plus if we DID land Arshavin more people may actually take notice. Other than ofcourse bringing in a quality player, people around the world may also take notice that Everton is becoming one of the big guns again.

But its all dreaming at this stage, have to wait and see unfortunately.. :(

Anyone who thinks we can still get him is living in cloud cuckoo land, we missed the boat big time with him and its not the first time we have been ’monitoring’ someone untill the big boys got wind of him, Essien was one that springs to mind, I still live in hope though, being an Evertonian you tend to dream and it’s a nap we will put a bid in along with Juve,Arsenal and Real Madrid .

The last few years have seen us steady the ship and we appear to be a much better run club. Paying the best part of £20,000,000 is a massive risk. What if he gets a career threatening injury? What if he doesn’t settle, or his style of football isn’t effective in the Premier League?
We are not a club that can afford to write off £20,000,000 if it goes wrong, so in my opinion such a move should be ruled out. We’ve made giant strides since the Walter Smith reign, when we seemed to be selling our best players every year just to survive - Speed, Barmby, Ferguson, Ball, Jeffers etc...
I would hate to find us back there.

Arshavin is just a distant memory. He will not be at EFC now he has become the darling of the press.

However, I would not buy any player with an over inflated price tag because og the Euro?s. The games bear no resemblance to the Premier League as they are about half the speed. Arshavin may look a world beater in the Euro?s and a carpet beater in the Prem

Should buy him end of story.

A player of that ability would lift the whole club and the players.

Youngsters at the club would learn a lot from a player of that calibre as well.

With the best will in the world I can’t see Arshavin coming to us. He’s still impressing in the Euro’s. As usual we missed our chance, he should have been coming to us in Jan after we sold Mcfadden. We have lost 3 firs team regulars in a sqaud that needed more No’s before they left. Sadly I do feel all the good work done by Moyes will go to waste, thanks to the lack of ambition from our pathetic powers that be. Signing Arshavin in Jan would have made a statement, Anichebe & Johnson playing regularly doesn’t. With Hiughes at City with money, and Spurs fucking spending all the time, we cannot expect David Moyes to keep on working miracles.

Clearly Arshavin is class, but he is a bit overpriced in my opinion. He is twenty-seven and £18 million cuts to much into the transfer budget. I would like Fernandes on loan or for a reasonable price, Engelaar as well (hopefully), a fast, skillful winger (maybe Shaun Wright-Phillips?) and a couple Moyes bargain buys from the Championship. Also, if AJ is sold (although I don’t think it will happen), we will need another striker.

"If AJ is sold, we need another striker", cue Asharvin. If we can get him then we must, this guy is a quality player who has impressed in every game I have seen him. Since they played us in the uefa, I followed Zenits progress and he always stood out. He has now taken it on to the international stage and produced at the highest level. He oozes class the like we used to see from players like, beardsley, bergkamp and zola. I honestly think he could take the premiership by storm, and if with any luck with us he would become an Everton legend.

Follow that with Fernandes on loan again, and 2 others in midfield I will be more than happy.

Let everyone else try and outbid each other for Arshavin. He is a great distraction while we are off doing all of our business. While i would love to see him in a blue shirt we need more numbers at this point in time. As we have seen before Moyes has plenty more quality up his sleeves and when he gets back from his break he will sign 2 or 3 mid fielders in the first two weeks of July. This will give them time to bed into the squad in pre season.
Now all has gone quiet on him just the way Moyes likes it. I think Bradley will be first through the door at the farm. Hopefully followed by a quality winger along the lines of Joaquin and the man we carn’t go a whole season without Mr Fernandes.
Im sure Moyes will have a great surprise around the corner for the end of the window as well.

look at this, there is no way on this earth that Arshavin will be coming to Everton.

He is linked with Barcelona, Chelsea, Inter, Arsenal and us - who would you choose ??? us paying £50k a week or Chelsea paying £100k.

Not a bloody chance

I think Arshavin is just like the Kings Dock stadium ? beyond Kenwright. The sooner this man goes the better. Moyes says he wants his new players in for pre-season, so Bill in his wisdom decides we has to wait to see the outcome of the ground. He must have known this so why did he not tell Moyes? Maybe he was busy with his 24/7 investment search... oh sorry that was a lie wasn?t it. Aask Tesco if you don't believe me.

We have a modest chance of landing Arshavin. He has already made positive noises about the blues.

One shouldn?t dream, far too old at 48 (44 of them as an Evertonian). But The thought of Arshavin, Fernandez and Engelaar taking the field makes me swell. All 3 of these guys have no fear, nor does Pienaar, Lescott, Cahill, Arteta and Yakubu.

Having young Vaughan back would be fabulous too. I?ve rated this kid so highly and it would be a new signing for us. This kid is due some slice of luck. If there is a god he?ll be in the England squad by end of season.

I emailed the club this time last year and told them to sign Arshavin as a priority. I told them he was like Kanchelskis but better. If only they had listened to me.

I think his Euro performances have been excellent but am still unconvinced he would be what we need. Whilst I dont have a ready made alternative I just have my doubts about this player.

First and foremost why are we all only aware of his talent when he has entered his 27th year. Given that it took Pires (very similar player) a year to adjust, for 10 mill are we only gonna get a good 2-3 years out of him albeit 09/10 with no resale value. I was at the Zenit game and I hadnt had an ale but I cant remember him.

I do have my doubts and I know he aint popular on this site but would go all out for Bentley - I know he has an ego, I know he would be lookin for a move 2 or 3 seasons in but the lads quality - dunno Arshavin for me would flatter to deceive especially when a clugger like Terry/Carra goes right through him and empties him out.

Bentley would move us on, allow us to free up Mikel into the middle where he belongs, Osman steps down to squad boy.

If we become successful then Bentley may stay, if we dont do that well I still reckon he would perform and thus guarantee us an at least money back price!

Paul Coleman: Although your efforts as a freelance scout for the blues must be applauded, you need to go higher now and perhaps e-mail santa claus or perhaps God with your wish for us to sign Arshavin as we need a miracle!

In response to the original post, I think we need at least 3 very good players right now, and we’ll wait to sign that one world class player after we secure champions league football next season! COYB!

What I don?t get is, all the conjecture and rumour mongering, when in reality, nothing has happened yet, Moyes is on holiday or has been for the previous 3 weeks at least. Nothing will happen till he gets back, I agree with the first poster. Get Moyes signed up, that could be the best signing we make this summer. Wait until something actually happens before we start to moan, how many other clubs have made a big signing, all we are getting right now is rumour mongering and little else....

Nobody has signed anyone of any note yet anyway have they? OK Chelsea have deals in place for that right back and there are other rumours, but nothing has really happened anywhere cos of the Euros.

Its all pish, AJ’s off to West Ham, we’re buying Engelaar, Bentley, Arshavin, Bent, Lywandowski (sp?), that aussie from Celtic, Milner, the young goalie from somwhere lower league, the striker from Wolves with the funny name and pretty much anyone else you care to mention!

Arashavin - a great player, reminds a bit of Peter Beardsley in his style of play. I am sure that DM wanted to sign him back in January. However - I don’t think we missed the boat at all - I really don’t think Zenit would have been prepared to let him go as after all they were in the middle of a successful title challenge and they were also seeking to win the UEFA Cup.

I think some people think all Moyes has got to do is identify the player he wants - pick up the phone- and the job’s done the player is signed. It’s not as easy as that !!!!

We will be one of about a dozen clubs with Arashavin on the wish list - he can only sign for one club.If he turns us down there will be several other clubs that he turns down.Just like Ramsay didn’t just turn us down when he signed for Arsenal - he turned down Man Utd.These things happen - we just move on.

We need to show a bit of faith in Moyes - he has got quite a good record in the transfer market. And remember - it’s not always the deals that make the most news that are the most successful. I would guess that Chelsea signing Shevchenko generated more news than our signing of Pienaar. I think most people would agree that the Pienaar deal was the better one.

I can’t understand why people are suggesting that we should sign Engelaar. To me, he looked terribly slow and ponderous. On the other hand, if Arshavin cannot be persuaded to come here, I do think that the pace of Sean Wright Phillips would add a different dimension. I would also like to see Fernandes given another chance because he clearly has potential but, bearing in mind last season’s performances, only on a loan deal.

Picture this. You're the manager of a side who have just won the Russian championship. Your main asset on the field is a 26/27-year-old playmaker with real talent, about to hit the prime of his career. Your club is going to play in the Champion's League next season and there's a major international tournament coming up.

A decent Premier League side, who have pretentions of Champions League football next season, make an enquiry, apparently eager to buy said playmaker. Unfortunately for this club, history dictates that there is only a very slim chance of them making the CL.

Your player has real confidence in his abilities and would like a tilt at winning trophies elsewhere in a bigger league. You have real confidence in this player and his abilities. Do you:

A - let the Premier League club sign him for £10M?

B - hang on to him until after the major international tournament in the hope that he shines and let the bidding war commence, knowing that you can most likely offer him to aforementioned club anyway.... £15M anyone, do I hear £18M, £20M perhaps???

Come on people, it's a no brainer. Arshavin was never leaving Zenith until after the Euros. Do you think that Mr Advocaat got where he is by letting this kind of opportunity go untried?

The only chance we had of signin Arshavin was if Russia crashed and burned in the group stages, or Arshavin never turned it on. I'm sure he did make positive noises about the blues, but you don't think that was a safety net, in case his ambitions of a top English or Spanish club didn't come to fruition?

Get real!!

He’s tall....he’s Dutch.....he wouldn’t cost that much he’s Engelaar.....Engelaar!!

I like him, he looks like ’our’ sort of player - big, tall, leggy, hard, good passer, tough tackler and he scores some great goals (see YouTube)

Like many an Evertonian, I sat down to watch the Holland v Russia game last Saturday, not so much because of an interest in the match, but rather to watch two of our reported ?targets?; Andrei Arshavin and Orlando Engelaar, in direct opposition. While Arshavin has been in our (the fans) minds ever since we played against him last year, Engelaar is a player that I personally had never heard of before the Euro?s, but I had read of DM?s apparent interest and, clearly, van Basten thinks he is worth his place in the Dutch side. So I sat and watched.....

As it happened, it was quickly apparent that one of Engelaar?s prime responsibilities was to deny Arshavin the space to influence the game and he failed so miserably in this role that he was substituted before half-time. Meanwhile, Arshavin went on to have a huge impact on both the game and, thereby, the result.

As a result of just two Euro performances, his ?apparent? value has rocketed, some would suggest doubled, and he has sparked the interest of some of the biggest (richest) clubs in Europe. To put it bluntly, EFC have missed the opportunity to make, perhaps, one of our greatest ever signings. Realistically, given his ?new? price tag and the level of competition, we have little or no chance of securing his services.

I cannot say, definitively, that we would have succeeded in signing him had we made a strong move earlier, but I do believe that we would have had, at least, a fair chance. Some reports suggest that Arshavin was well aware of our interest back in the last window (January), and again, immediately after the Uefa Cup final. His current manager, Advocaat, even went on record to say that he believed that his star player would be leaving Zenit, and as far as I am aware only Man City and ourselves were suggesting any interest at that time. Despite Shinawatra?s money, I would have backed EFC to succeed over City had it come down to a choice between the two.

Today, I see that the link with Engelaar has been rekindled. There may, of course, be no substance to this report, but it has just re-ignited my frustration. Simply put, we have lost out on the Thoroughbred, because we apparently didn?t have either the means or the balls to open the stable door when we had the chance, and we seem to have ended up trying to pin our name on the tail of the Donkey instead. Did I once read the word ?ambition? in the same sentence as Everton? If so, I could do with a gallon of whatever the author of that remark was drinking. If Engelaar is truly our number one pick for this summer then heaven help us.

The theme that seems to be running through this tread and others is that we were too slow and we have missed the boat, we should have bought him when we sold Fadds.

Richard Parker and Michael Brien are the two that stand out because they seem to have some common sense.

What makes people think that a manager who sell one of his star palyers three quarters of the way through a season and when they were still in the Wafer Cup?

We never missed the boat because the boat was never in the dock in the first place,

Tony: a request from the Editor: Can you stop with this "Wafer Cup" thing of yours. It was mildly amusing the first time. Now it's just irritating...

No probs but I can’t see why it is irritating, I have always called it the Wafer Cup, as I have always called Man Utd ManUre, Anfield Analfield and of course Liverpool the redshite.

It is just a phrase I use, like Blue Bill and Fat Keith, nothing derogatory.

Anyone think Mikel?s worth having a go at?

He?s certainly fits the bill in my opinion. Aggressive, good on the ball, good passer and has a nasty streak about him which we lack in my opinion. Moyes is obviously looking for a tall midfielder and Mikel again fits that description. He?s around 6ft 3 and can tackle and mix it physically.

I?m expecting people to say no, he?s out of our range but I disagree. Chelsea have just bought a right back (Bosingwa) so Essien will be playing centre midfield next season. With Lampard and Ballack in there as well Mikel will be a squad player at best. We?d probably have to pay around 12 million for him but I?d say he?s worth it.

Him and Fernandes in the middle has a good look to it in my opinion.
