It seems to me that our "competitors" Newcastle, Villa, Spurs etc are in a much better financial position that us.
Given that the placings virtually match the money spent, I can't see us getting anywhere near the top 6 this season. In fact I'd go as far as to say that I can see us struggling, again, in 2008-09.

Apart from the top3, all other clubs that buy new players will need to go through a transitional phase as they try to find their best configuration and formation. This is what Everton does best, to pick out the holes and overrun their opponent’s lack of synergy and cohesion.
It’s when we face true opposition in the top3 (and Liverpool + corrupt system) that our best endeavour will eventually lose out to genuine quality.
Over the 38 games we should do well against the other 15. By 2009/10, the other 15 teams will panic, kneejerk, sack managers and rebuild all over again. Everton simply need to repeat same formula. It’s been like this for several seasons now and most of my friends (who support other teams) are still failing to see through the problem. Teams need time to build, unless you’re in the top3.

Why make such a negative post? What’s the point? It just brings me down! Where’s all the "my mate’s dads accountant knows Sean Wright Phillips" type posts gone or have they been banned? They’re about as useful as the above but much more fun!

Why such a pessimistic attitude before the season starts. You want to look on the bright side of life.

They will spend 40 mil or so on average players, on has-been-stars that don’t cut it for them, like they have done for so long now.
Spurs is throwing a lot of cash around and indeed could finish above us, but they could easily enough finish below us as they once again will have to build around a largely new team.
Villa doesn’t seem to have more money than we do, to be honest. From the teams that finished below us, only Sunderland and City seem to have real spending power. S’land are lightyears behind us so no worries there. And Man City need to keep their heads cool. That Thai owner will start shouting again once they lose two games. I’ll be looking forward to it.
I actually feel better about things than I did same time last year. The team that finished 5th is mainly intact. Cars was the only regular that left us. Cahill and Arteta missed half the season (or played below par), we had some bad luck with refereeing decisions and such. If all that falls into place this year we’ll easily finish in the top-6 again. With a few decent additions we should be able to have a good cup run, do well in the Uefa and maybe challenge for 4th. It’s not all that bitter.

The knee jerk reactionists were saying the exact same thing last season before and even after we brought in the players we did.
Obviously they have no faith at all in the team that brought us to 5th last season, if we don’t buy anymore will our players suddenly become crap?

Good teams are much better than good individuals, and we have a fantastic side in terms of team ethic and comradery.
We do lack depth in quality, but the European Championships and player holidays are why we have not added anyone yet.
My only concern is the replacement of Lee Carsley. Many fans overlook the impact that this lad had on and off the pitch. His distribution was not always the best but defensively he was a collossus. We have no other player even remotely like him, and the young lad filling in towards the end of the season has some way to go before he settles down. For me it is vital that we buy the correct replacement for carsley, a good pro on and off the pitch, and that will just be to stand still. We still need a CM to dictate and knit moves together.
Not forgetting Moyes must sign a deal...Oh no I am begginning to flap.........

We have a Manager who has still to sign his contract.
We have a Board that is hell bent on moving us.
We have a Board that cannot/will not tell the Manager how much he has to spend in the transfer window.
Whats the problem ?

After your posts the other day I’m always thinking of songs when I see your name. Now you’ve got me humming that Monty Python classic :’ ’always look on the bright side of life, dee dum, de dum, dee dum, dee dum’
Perhaps it’ll replace the Z cars theme when the boys run out onto the pitch in Kirkby. What do ya think 1
As to this thread I agree with both sides i.e
You can’t automatically think that the sides that spend big will overtake us, as others have said look at last season. But and its a BIG but looking at the quality some are now adding I think its going to be increasingly difficult to buck the law of averages season aftrer season.

Whoops, got to go - just knocked half a cup of coffee all over my desk, computer and my tidy pile of typing. That will serve me right for doing this letter in work!!

Ones making money.
The others a harbinger of things to come.

It would also mean that there is no skill in managing a team. You can?t just buy a top four place, it needs cash and management. You also don?t have to spend zillions. We all know that last season we would have made it with a deeper squad of decent players, perhaps just another four.
Does anybody think Alex Ferguson has done what he has purely because of the budget? His success created the budget.
15 Posted 27/06/2008 at 11:26:12
I will say though that if we don’t finish 4th and actually win something next year all these dickheads that think the club is still progressing, and will continue to progress will finally shut up.
5th and a decent cuo run (not getting turned over in the 3rd round of the FA Cup either) is about as good as Everton can hope for.... AGAIN.
I just hope we can get a couple of decent European away days again. Bring it on.
16 Posted 27/06/2008 at 11:29:08
Or maybe it is BECAUSE he has been told his budget that he has still not signed his contract ?
17 Posted 27/06/2008 at 12:40:55
Do we know if Moyes has signed a new contract yet ? Some papers say he has - others he hasn’t ? Do we know exactly how much he has to spend on new players ? I don’t think any of the previous contributors to this thread do.I know that I don’t know the precise figure.
I think some of you are hitting the panic button a bit early. There is uncertainty involving several clubs not just Everton - that is if you believe all the speculation. Some examples -
Chelsea - Lampard & Dogba are they going to Inter Milan or are they staying?
Man Utd - is Ronaldo going to Real Madrid?
Arsenal - Hleib & Adebayor will they be going ?
Man City - will Mark Hughes want to change some of the squad there ?
We need to have a bit more faith in Moyes -he has a decent record in bringing in players. We also need to remember that it’s not always the big money transfers that are the best. Sunderland paid £9m for Craig Gordon compared to our approx £3m for Tim Howard - is Gordon 3 times better than Howard ?????
Let’s just wait and see before we make some of our judgements - some of you I recall from last year were quick to rubbish the signing of Jagielka last year - " What are we doing signing a bloke from a club that was relegated - that’s not making progress" - that’s what some were saying a year ago. Think the Doom Merchants got that one slightly wrong!!!!
18 Posted 27/06/2008 at 13:10:05
To do that we need to replace Carsley, Faddy, Fernandes, Graveson, Stubbs and Wessels who all played some part in last seasons success.
We will not get a better opportunity to recover our rightful place among the elite.
19 Posted 27/06/2008 at 13:19:17
Clearly if Moyes had signed then the board would be parading it everywhere, they could do with some good publicity at the moment. If they shout at about DM agreeing in principle, then I’d expect lots and bells and whistles if he does sign.
I have to say I was like Tony Williams and Lyndon last year too - so hope everything pans out.
20 Posted 27/06/2008 at 13:30:39
whilst I agree with the replacements we need (barr Stubbs), did you ever consider a career as a motivational speaker... perhaps in Zimbabwe or some other similar regime?
"recover our rightful place among the elite" Ja!
