David Nugent - a brave young man

Let me say this at the outset before anyone jumps up and down with "we don't need him, we've got Vaughan" etc... This isn't about Nugent and his value in monetary terms.
Whatever we all think of David's skill, if we need another striker and whether he is worth the asking price etc, he has worn his heart on his sleeve by stating repeatedly that he wants to play for Everton. I can't remember the last time I heard anyone saying something like that until the "I have always supported Everton" ? after they've been signed. Hmmm, can't actually remember many of those deals either but never mind. All players must have a team that they support/supported but very few will stand up and say it to the media.
I read some comment somewhere where it was said that, just because someone supports Everton does not mean that they should play here. Of course not; if that were the case, there'd be 40 thousand of us trying to squeeze through the tunnel at kick-off time.
Nugent is just like any one of us, he loves Everton but unlike most of us, could actually go out there and do what every one of us wants to - wear that Blue shirt and be a hero for his team. Come on, admit it, how many of us would sell their grannies for a chance to be in that position?
Wherever he goes, be it Sunderland or Portsmouth, imagine the stick he'll get when he runs out when playing the Dark Side? I just hope he sticks a few in on that day!
In many ways, he's set himself up for a fall but for me, he's been brave and proud to call himself an Evertonian, just like we are. Call me sentimental and old fashioned but I really admire him for that. Brave or foolish or just naive, I don't know but I believe that players who's hearts are with the Blues will always give that extra 10% and run that extra yard. Being a Blue does not make anyone Superman but I think it does make a difference to their attitude on the pitch.
Wherever his future lies, I hope that when he does get to run out at Goodison, he gets a good reception whether he's wearing Royal Blue or not. I think he deserves that at least.
