Phil Jagielka becomes a blue

I have just heard that Everton have agreed personal terms and Jags will be joining Everton for a fee of around £4 million. He may join up with squad as early as tomorrow for their training in St Andrews. Things are starting to look up. Who should we sign next?

I wish the BBC change their photo of him, he looks like Phill Neville?s idiot brother...
Oh and we should sign Fernandes but hey...

Big Deal.Everton should be attracting a far better breed of player than this. Just about says it all abouth the club and its manager as far as ambition goes.

I really expected and wanted a litte bit more than Jagielka and the other work horses we get linked with.Typical Moyes player though.

No pace or skill but can fill several roles. Fuck me what a boring and dull manager we have in Moyes .

Tony, nothing ever pleases you does it. I personally like Jakielka although can’t profess to have watch him more than a handful of times but these are the atributes I think he has.

He was the captain of his team at 24, is on the verge of being selected in the England squad is 6ft, strong and quick and can play in a number of different positions. Sheffield United fans all speak very highly of him and the club were desperate for him to stay. I?ll judge him after he?s actually turned out for our team and I suggest you do the same.

Having watched Everton from the 62-63 season and supported them mainly from afar for the last 40-odd years, I am an avid reader of this site. Like all true Evertonians, I yearn for the type of player who will get us into the privileged top four on a regular basis. Reading some of the replies to prospective Everton signings, I truly believe that a dose of financial reality wouldn?t come amiss.

EFC funding will stretch to certain types of player and no more. Buying Phil Kagielka as opposed to some of the more prosaic players I have seen us quoted as interested in makes financial sense as we actually get three players in one. David Moyes has always looked at the several aspects of a player that will blend into the current team. Injury-prone players are not signed, hence Sean Davis, Mikael Forsell, David Dunn who were all linked but remained unsigned.

Both Phil Neville and Jagielka represent the multi-positional, injury-free solid professionals that are the backbone of any consistent side. Hence in the last four seasons our worst position was just outside the top ten.

Aside of Krøldrup and Beattie, Moyes has not made too many mistakes and has actually made money on average players such as Marcus Bent and Kevin Kilbane. Another point of interest is the number of players recently ? AJ, Jason Koumas, David Nugent, Jagielka ? who have all indicated a preference to come to Goodison. We are now a Club on the cusp of the top four with an astute manager making financially sensible buys in an overheated marketplace... what more do you want?

Have we or haven?t we signed Jagielka? There are contrasting reports. Why isn?t there any news on the official website or Sky Sport News? If he has signed I am just glad it?s over. This is been going on forever.

Hold on Tony, weren’t you the one who wanted new signings?

And now that we have them you suddenly aren’t bothered. You’re an enigma mate.

Tony - "No pace" ??!!!

100m in 11.5 seconds isnt too bad in my opinion.

I have got to agree with Marshy about the signing of Jags,(if it has happened)it has hardly got me jumping up and down.I just think if we have got some more signings in the pipe line,we need to raise the bar and bring in quality. We need someone to come in who will get everyone buzzing.

He’s not a signing to get you jumping up and down, but he is just as i mportant as one of those signings.
All we need now is Manu (cough) and a centre back and I’m happy... just.

I don’t know about anyone else but I was as negative as some people here when we failed to sign anyone. Now we have signed Jagielka, I’m delighted, hopefully he will be the first of a few more. Jagielka, I predict, will be like Carsley, quiet and effective. I’m happy, even if Brian and Tony aren’t.

Everyone who belives that he is that quick needs to get their head examined. Watch him play. He is not actually that quick. I would put him on par with say Hibbert or Mcfadden. 11.5 seconds my arse. I believe that source came from wikipedia which is a load of shit.

I would still like to sign him though. He is not a speed merchant or a mdifield maestro but he does a job. He can play in 4 or 5 positions and this to me is very important.

Steve Clarinbold of course I want signings I just happen to think we have enough utility players at the club do do the stand in jobs.

I was looking for a signature or 2 that would get the fans buzzing and give the whole club a lift.

No offence to Jagy but its just another dull Moyes type buy that he tends goes for.A workhorse type who will no doubt stand in and do fine but we need some extra quality and a few players that can turn a games.

Sorry if I havent wet my self with excitment.

So tell me who you would expect to see signed?

Taking into account the fact that we need to sign five or six players to get the numbers up and the probability that we don’t have that much money and our wage structure etc etc.

I can’t see any of future signings getting fans buzzing (with the possibility of Nugent if we sign him) but hey at least we’re getting players in now.

FAO Tony Marsh.

1) How many times have you seen Jagielka play a full game and really observed his performance?

2) How many Sheff Utd fans have you spoken to about the lad.

Answer honestly.

I can answer ’loads’ to both questions. I have attended about 30 or so Sheff Utd games with Jags playing as I used to live in Sheffield and go the game with some of the lads for the crack. They idolised this young kid Jagielka as if he were a superstar and mocked me as an Evertonian for Everto getting rid ... it didn’t take long for me to see why. The lads got pace, puts a bloody good tackle in, wins the ball in the air and has good distribution.

Who did you want to sign, Stevie Fookin Gerrard?

Well said Mark.

The comments from Tony Marsh are both ignorant & negative - another Moyes hater - that this site seems to thrive on!

If he can’t see that Jagielka is an absolute steal at £4M he doesn’t know his ass from his elbow.

Jagielka IS quick he’s a great tackler, good in the air & a decent holding midfielder. He’s a crowd favourite at Brammall lane & he’ll go on to be the same at GP.

WTF do clowns like Tony expect???
Tony Marsh
17   Posted 04/07/2007 at 19:23:40

The Jagielka debate. Look guys I know some of you are creaming your Y fronts because we have made a signing[allegedly] but all I am saying is with us recieving
a bumper payout from last season,s league placing and the added sky money I thought
we might of been shopping a bit more up market.

I am not knocking the lad its more a go at the board than anything else.Wheres the money?
Do we have money? If we had money would we be buying Jagy?Is this it for us as a club the bargain basement?

As an after thought .If Jagy is as good as you say Mark why was there no interest from any of the big boys or teams in our tier of the league? Spurs,Newcastle,Villa etc.

18   Posted 04/07/2007 at 19:38:37

Tony,
See my earlier posting. We need to be clever with our money as we need to make more signings than most clubs. Moyes is not going to sign players who have over-inflated prices (like Bent for instance).

I think for what we have paid for him Jagielka is an excellent signing. You still haven’t said who would get you buzzing so I can only assume your just being overly pessimistic and negative.

Steve, I can see where your coming from when you say we need to make more signings than most clubs, obviously to bulk the squad up.But, if we are buying average players, what are they going to bring quality wise? If,(god forbid)Arteta got injured, who replaces him?At the moment we don’t have anyone with the quality to replace him.Thats why we have to start buying quality players and not just average squad players.
Steve Claringbold
20   Posted 04/07/2007 at 20:09:22

Brian, In an ideal world maybe we could afford the quality, but with the TV money the prices have gone sky high, so, like it or lump it we’ll have to get what we can get.

I honestly don’t understand how Jags is not a good signing.IM not Moyes greatest fan but through no fault of his he has limited funds to play with and as Jags in my opinion is a better full back than either Neville or Hibbet and can play in other positions surely this strengthens the squad Yes wed all like £20+million signing but its not going to happen
Daz Stewart
22   Posted 04/07/2007 at 21:09:03

The whole basis of the argument is that the ’quality’ players demand big wads of cash in wages. Our current top earners have parity clauses in their contracts. Although I am quite sure there are many more than the 3 players who’ve come out in public and said they want to play for the Blues. Some players just aren’t worth chasing because we know their likely wage demands which would send shockwaves through our team. So for example a 9 million transfer becomes a lot more with an average 60k a week wages for the next tier of player as we’d have 4 or 5 other current players demanding 20k per week more as per their parity clauses. That could be the thinking at the moment that it is the wage structure that would prevent the signing of players in the next bracket rather than the actual transfer fee itself. So its easy really isn’t it-change the wage structure and the ’quality and exciting’ players can be signed.

Or keep the wage structure and get equivalent talented players from overseas for a fraction of cost. I really do think if we had a better scouting network overseas, we could get international versions of the likes of parker, defoe, barton, as opposed to the likes of Flamini already in the premiership who would already be on better money than we could offer at other clubs. Money seems to mean more than success to some players so it really is a big obstacle to overcome to attract the players most Evertonians feel we should be looking at.

I was just thinking.Do we really need to buy Jags? Say Moyes has got money set aside for a midfielder, say 5 or 6 million.I would rather he have put the £4m we would have to pay for Jags to that, and paid £8m - £10m for a quality midfielder. At the end of the day we are crying out for another play-maker.

The signing of Phil Jagielka is what David Moyes does best. Identifying good solid players, bringing them in cheaply and then taking them to the next level.

Several other managers looked at players like Cahill, Lescott, Neville, Howard and Arteta but only Moyes was wise enough to take a chance.

Moyes purchases good players relatively cheap and turns them into great players worth double their original transfer.

Jagielka is just the latest rough diamond Moyes will polish. I’m very excited by the Jagielka transfer.

Ignore Tony Marsh and his moronic comments. If he had his way Arteta, Cahill and Lescott would never have signed for Everton because he wouldn’t have deemed them worthy.

A good solid signing. I reckon you?ll get at least 8 good games in every 10 from somebody like this. He IS fast, he wants to play for the Club and the Manager and he?s the right age, but with good expeience.

Contrast this to signing a so called flair player like Van der Meyde. 1 good game in 10 ( he played 9 last season and was poor in all of them so even that?s not a certainty!), he doesn?t like Moyes and he would rather have a night out in a Club ending in tabloid headlines than treat his body with the respect required to compete at the highest level. He?s cost us £1.8m plus around £3m in wages. What a waste. Sorry Andy, I know you?ve had your problems, but you know it?s true deep down.

Football is a TEAM game where the sum is often greater than the parts ( Wimbledon early 90?s, Villa ?81 and ?82, Porto under Mourinho as examples ) and the parts greater than the sum ( Man Utd 68-93, Liverpool 90 - 2008, Newcastle for the last 10 years etc ).

David Moyes is looking for the right blend and I think he?s getting quite close now with the first choice XI. What is still worrying is that the squad is too small, especially with Naysmith apparently Sheffield bound, but let?s see what unfolds in the next few weeks, eh?

The voice of Supreme Knowledge
Paul Atress who only a few months ago didnt know the difference between James Mcfadden and James Vaughan. Yes all listen to him.

Please Paul dont label me with quotes or innuendos that you have made up and I have no Idea what you are talking about.

I have never called in to question the ability of any of those players you mention.I did once have a pop at Moyes for signing Lescott then not playing him but thats totally different.

Wait a minute wasnt it you that said Anichebe and Vaughan were to young to make an impact last season in the Premier League and we should stick with Beattie and Mcfadden.

Yes you certainly know the score matey I will give you that.Anyway stop being so nasty you big bully

I don’t think the pro-Moyes lobby (no apologists tag please) should dismiss everything Tony says on principle, tempting as it may be. I’m pleased with Jags signing but all Tony was saying (initially) is that he would rather a flair player who can turn a game - a fair point. However as Daz Stewart points out, it’s not that simple because even if we do manage to secure such a person there’s a financial knock-on effect.

As a result, the debate isn’t really about who we sign but about how the club is being run - and the direct result that has on transfer business. So while we can argue about that until the cows come home we can probably agree that signing a flair player (like Fernandes) is something we’d all like to see.

Tony, I thought you would have leant from passed mistakes regarding slagging our new players off before kicking a ball in anger... remember when you said Lescott was another Kroldrup and we should have signed Ferrari instead... you said lack of ambition then about the transfer. Am just glad your not the manager as one of the most promising English defenders would have slipped through our fingers. Think about it fella.

Chris Mckenny hit the nail on the head, when he didn?t start the first couple of games of last season, Tony Marsh immediately wrote off Lescott as another Krøldrup. There ended any respect I had for his opinion.
