The Mail Bag
Big Name Signings? No thanks...

I?ve been reading some of the letters in the mailbag of late and couldn?t help smiling knowingly as the fact that some Evertonians are just negatively inclined, borderline cynics! FFS people get a grip! All this wailing about a lack of signings. We?ve got Jagielka, on our terms no less (despite the murmurs of ?dithering? rearing it?s ugly head amongst the most knowlegable supporters in the world ho-hum) and what?s more, he wants to play for the club. Now granted, he?s no Torres, but that lot from across the park have a habit of turning expensive big name strikers into bags of shite of late (Cisse, Bellamy anyone?). Okay, so Bellamy prolly was a bag of shite to begin with, but you get my point.
Instead of lamenting the fact that we are not paying over the odds for Spanish imports, how about dwelling on a few home truths?
- We have signed up the best Spanish player in the Prem on a 5 year deal.
- We have some players who did well and made a name for themselves last year and who should have a better season this time round what with being more settled.
- In James Vaughan we have one hell of a young player who I think is going to get even better next year.
- The spine of the team is young yet experienced (Howard, Yobo, Lescott, Arteta, Neville, Johnson etc) and have their best years ahead of them.
- The return of a fit AJ and Tim Cahill, both of whom we played (pretty damn well) without for the last few months of the campaign.
I have seen enough from Moyes in the transfer market in times past to assure me that he knows what he is doing. Watch Jagielka be this seasons Joleon Lescott, Tim Cahill or Mikel Arteta ? t?wouldn?t surprise me in the least. Granted, the ginger one has signed his share of duds, but upon scrutiny all the managers who finished above us last year have made their fair share of gaffes as well, as have most great managers throughout history.
A few years back I too clamoured for big-name signings every close season, and what did it get me? Per Kroldrup, that?s who ☺ So I have learnt to trust in Moyes? judgement and to have faith that today?s unknown meager-monied transfer could well be the next sensation.
Things are looking decidedly up in my view and I cannot wait for the new season to get cracking. We are going to upset the big four next year, mark my words ;)
