Squad Numbers

Comments (2)

According to the official site the squad numbers are now thus:

2 Hibbert, 3 Naysmith,
4 Yobo, 5 Weir,
6 Arteta, 7 van der Meyde,
8 Johnson, 9 Beattie,
11 McFadden, 12 Turner,
14 Vaughan, 15 Stubbs,
16 Jagielka, 17 Cahill,
18 Neville, 19 Valente,
21 Osman, 24 Howard,
25 de Silva, 26 Carsley,
27 Jutkiewicz, 28 Anichebe,
29 Boyle, 30 Ruddy,
31 Vidarsson.

Firstly, the article is all about Lescott getting the Number 5, and then they list Weir at number 5! [Since updated &mash; Ed]

Secondly, why has Howard not moved up to number 1? Are we about to see yet another new goalkeeper arrival?

Thirdly (seeing as it's the season for mindless speculation), given that the number 10 has been left vacant, who do we think is going to slip into that? Smith or Nugent?

Finally, do squad numbers mean anything these days? Beattie with the big number 9, and Cahill at 17? I liked it when numbers used to give at least some indication of the first 11.

I’m not happy that Beattie retains the number 9 and has been a huge disappointment but this also implies as best guess that he won’t be leaving anytime in the near future, these are the sort of things that anger a lot of disatisfied supporters even more, although not ready yet I’d even prefer to see Vaughan get the number 9 as he did more last season in his brief run out to earn it more thab Biffa.

I hear a lot of these footballer types are a very superstitious bunch - maybe they choose to stay a specific number for a superstitious reason

Or, hasn?t Howard had No.24 for a couple of years now (at Man Ure and last season for us)
