Holding out for Everton??

Comments (23)

It seems David Nugent doesn't want to go to Portsmouth either

I agree with a lot of people here who feel £6M is too much for him, particularly since strikers are not in short supply at Everton at the moment, but I do think he is worth the £4M we're supposedly prepared to pay for him.

I hope he's digging his heels in for a move to Everton, maybe not in the summer, but in January his value will begin to fall, and Preston must know this. It seems a game of brinkmanship between Everton, Preston and Nugent is going on, and the first to blink will lose.

Another protracted transfer saga goes on (nothing new there then!) but hopefully another quality player signed, and at a price we can afford.

If Nugent truely wants to come here he holds all the cards. Everton have refused, and rightly so, to pay 7 Million for the guy because at this time he does not warrant it. That is not to say that he can not come to us and fourish, becoming a striker worth more than 7 Million, but right now he is not. So if he just continues to refuse to come to terms with these other teams, have another good season in the Championship and come to us for free next season that would be fantastic. He knows that Everton want him, but just not for 7 Million at this time.

You are all assuming Moyes wants him. For sure, Nugent wants to play for everton, but Moyes doesnt appear to be battering the door down does he? Quite clearly prepared to let him join another club.

Nugent does not hold all the cards - Everton Football Club do.

Internet rumours do not a real transfer make.

It?s just great to know that (another) player wants to join us for all the right reasons. Whether his wish comes true and he runs out at Goodison wearing the blue of Everton remains to be seen, but (wherever the guy ends up) he deserves to be applauded, if he runs out next season at Goodison.

There?s something to be said about a player that?s also a supporter, but lets not forget this guys a professional and another year in the Championship with PNE, with Euro 2008 looming may not be doing his international prospects any good.

Makes you wonder about an England partnership of AJ and Nugent next summer, if they?ve had a full season together?

I still can not see what he has to his game. What are his actual strengths? Having seem him a lot last season and now in the under 21s I dont actually rate him. I was expecting lighning pace but he is not at all. Vaughan and Johnson would leave him for dead. He is not someone who is going to link up and play the target man role. So what does he actually offer us? In my opinion, we dont need him. We have a striker in Vaughan who has all the qualities. He has pace, agression and can head the ball like he is 6ft 3. Yes he is young but so is Nugent. I dont think Mcfadden had a fair go last season. I think he links up well with Johnson escpecially in preseason and games like Reading and Luton. I dont care if Nugent is an evertonian or a scouser. We have the likes of Stubbs, Hibbert and Anichebe who are scousers. His goal record is not good enough to demand a price of 6-7 million and quite frankly his attributes do not. We are better of strengthning of areas such as midfield and defense.

If we bought Nuggent for anywhere between 4-6 million and then sold either BT or McFad for 2-3 million, then to me, thats good business. Its a smart investment that has potential to grow over the next 5 years. In that time we will benefit from having a young, english forward that will no doubt make a name for himself in the Premiership (Cahill/Lescott). He?s not going to score more than 15 goals a season but he would make a great squad player and improve our striking options.

Or we can let him go to pompey and make do with BT and McFadden. Come on Bill, its only money

I agree with most of the posts here, if only because Nugent is in the last year of his contract with Preston and can talk to anyone in January as a free agent next year. £6-7 million is way over the odds, I would think £3-4M is generous and looking on the BBC website I think Preston know this and ought to respect Nugent?s wishes.

I think Everton are finally using their heads. Nothing more certain than that Nuge wants to come to Goodison and I think Moyes wants him as well. Great business I would say, Preston will be begging Everton for £4 mill in the not-too-distant future because, if it gets to January he is only worth £500k ? if that.

I wonder if Moyes is keeping the No 10 shirt for him or maybe Alan Smith??? The plot thickens.
PS Does anyone think Riequelme will be a suprise signing???

Can?t say Nugent does much for me — just another reasonable Championship striker. But I get the impression that if Preston wanted only £3M, Moyes/Kenwright would balk at the price as a matter of principle. Not really hard bargainers — just skint!

To the comment of Everton not being in short supply of strikers is misleading as although we have a few options upfront none including Johnson are prolific enough strikers to push for 4/5 position. Johnson plays deep and wide, we need a poacher who is quick and will get 20 goals a season. Our defense is strong but upfront we are still lacking. Pay the odds people are asking for players or prepare to drop down to a mid-table finish, the other teams are buying big this year.

Nugent is worth £4 million at best. Paying anything over that would be silly and David Moyes clearly knows that. Anyone who watched England U-21s Euro Adventure this summer will have seen that Nugent isn?t all he?s cracked up to be, clearly behind Ashley Young and the other young England strikers, possibly including our own James Vaughan.

Nugent clearly would love to play for Everton and Moyes is using that to our advantage. Nugent is having serious problems choosing another club and his passion for Everton is forcing Preston to drop their valuation or lose him when his contract runs out. Moyes is playing a perfect game, by refusing to pay over the odds and forcing the player to make the move happen.

There are two outcomes: either Nugent will give up and sign for another club willing to pay silly money, in which case Everton will have missed out on a very expensive useful player; or he?ll dig his heels in and force the move to Everton, in which case, we?ll get a useful addition to the squad at a reasonable price.

re: James Moody

You actually think Johnson plays "deep and wide" ??

are you kidding me???

AJ is a shoulder runner. He plays on the last man. He works the channels very well as the lone striker, but as a natural 2 upfront he is clearly a shoulder guy and would benefit from either a big man (BT..although thats not really panned out) or a deep player linking it up (Faddy/Nuge).

The lad who said its good business to recoup of Beats/Faddy and then spend on Nugent talks a lot of sense.

Also, remember. 3 of our best and most influential players, AJ, Tim and Joleon all came from being regarded as the best player in there position outside the prem. Nugent is regaded by people in the championship as the best player in the division. Personally I think its a good move at 4m.

I think we should offer what Moyes actually wants to pay 3-4m on paper and then leak it to the press - make it known we?ve had a bid rejected - as soon as the lad realises we?ve had a bid turn down he?ll sit tight until January (-and preston will sell on deadline day in august) - i reckon thats our script from here on in now.

You never know... maybe Vaughany had a word over in Holland on behalf of the gaffer?

Agree with John Charles? post.

AJ is definately a shoulder runner, the only reason he goes deep and wide is because of crap balls played to him by the defenders. He wants to get the ball and draw defenders...I agree that Nugent is not worth 7, Vaughn and Anichebe showed enough promise last year to give them the nod.

He is not proven internationally, in the Premier League and should not warrant a £7M sale.

Another option that makes sense to me would be to bid 3~4 million for Nugent and offer Anichebe to PNE on loan for a year.

That way, we don’t have too many strikers crowding around, and young Anichebe would get a year of precious 1st team football. At the end of which, hopefully, he will be a far better striker than he is now. PNE will get a useful striker to replace Nugent for a year and try to push for Premiership promotion.

Of course, for Everton, we would get a great buy at 3 ~ 4 million.

Sounds like a win-win to all concerned.

I don’t think we need another striker. One of the highlights of last season for me was to see how Vaughan and Anichebe came on. Don’t write Beattie off yet either.

No - what we need is a midfield general. I would sell the farm if I thought we could buy Riquelme. I know its probably a pipe dream, but a player like him on the pitch would lift the rest of the lads to another level - for years to come - he is only 28.

I think the main reason DM hasn’t put any bid in for Nugent is that he isn’t his first choice buy. He is a long time fan of Smith and the rumours of a move for him are so strong that I believe there must be something in it. DM does not want to be seen to talk down such an avid EFC guy like Nugent, it wouldn’t be good PR, so he just stays quiet.
Nugent isn’t going to take the pressure off AJ like a fit Smith can (if he’s over his injury & stays on the pitch long enough), not yet at least. He’s not going to buy both without at least sales for Beattie and/or Mcfadden well advanced.
All in all I think Nugent’s loyalty to the cause could work against him, in a world where that is all too rare, that would be a shame.

I think Nugent would be a good buy for around £4-5m. As for what he would bring to the team- he’s strong, awkward and good in the air. The perfect foil for AJ’s pace and directness. As we saw last season, when AJ has the ball down the channels, we had Cahill and Stubbsy waiting at the far post for the cross to come in. We scored a few like that. Add Nuge into the mix and defenders will have a right headache. Nobody will want to makr him due to his size and aerial ability. Think Big Dunc, albeit with less height and power, but probably with more time on the pitch. Beattie and McFadden i think should be given another chance and it’s just too son for Vaughan and Anichebe - they should be used sparingly this season.

Gareth Holme please do not make me laugh. Nugent is completely different to Duncan Ferguson. Nugent is 5ft 11 and very average in the air. He is not a target man and he does not have lighning pace. He has a few skills and that is it.

I am completely against putting Anichebe out on loan. How many other teams have a striker with his sheer strength? He has showed he can change games because he is too powerful for oppositions as seen against the likes of Chelsea, Wigan and Arsenal where he came on.

Vaughan for me should start the season with or without Nugent. He is going to be fully fit and hungry. He offers a lot more in terms of pace, power, aerial ability and agression.

The closest player I would compare Nugent too out of our squad would be James Mcfadden: Skillful, average pace and a decent shot. I think Mcfadden would bang them in in the championship. You just have to look at Robert Earnshaw becuase he scored more than Nugent in the championship yet failed dramatically in the premiership.
James Newcombe
18   Posted 08/07/2007 at 15:24:57

Connor, I thought Earnshaw looked pretty good in the prem - he was just used very sparingly by Bryan Robson for some reason. Saw this on Wikipedia: "He is second only to Thierry Henry in terms of goals-per-minute in Premiership history." Of course some wag could have made that up being on that site! But I think he’ll prove to be well worth the £3.5m transfer.

Although Victor would probably benefit from a full season starting every week at PNE I’ve got to agree we need to keep him - he offers a completely different option to anything else we have (-okay him and Beattie sometimes play the same game but Victor is more effective).

The other thing on Nugent can be seen in Anichebe and Vaughan. I think Moyes recognises the way Goodison’s atmosphere lifts when Victor or Vaunghy are playing... mainly due to the fact they are young, local, evertonian lads. Thats not to say we dont get behind Beattie, we do, but personally I feel our home crowd is much better and suportive when one of the young lads is on - I think Nugent would generate that from the fans too. Is that a valid point?

Then Smith too would also be a good buy, can play wide right, center mid and is a good striker and a player very much in the Moyes mould. I think he would do well for us - but we can only have so many strikers right!? Makes a difference from 2 seasons ago... who was it against we have Ossie and Tim upfront at home? As I remarked to my mate on the day "fook me its 4-6-0!"

Vaughan may have come through the youth ranks but is not local, he?s a Brummie. Anichebe may have been brought up in Liverpool (complete with accent) but he?s a Nigerian.

Crowds appreciate any player who clearly puts heart and soul into their football. This is the real difference. Any player who brings that AND can clearly play and contribute will always get the crowd onside.

OK so I can’t have Riquelme (the silence was deafening). But think about this - Take Tim Howard and our best back four (perm any four from Yobo, Stubbs, Lescott, Hibbert, Valente and Jagielka) + Arteta and Cahill (and Carsley or Neville) + Johnson and Anichebe, Vaughan, Beattie, or McFadden). That’s 10 isn’t it? Now shove the mystery man in with Arteta and Cahill. The mystery man must always be available in the middle of the park, must have a lot of mongrel in him, have a brilliant first touch, have vision, have a killer pass, be able to score a few goals. Na - we don’t need another striker - we need a midfield general.

Writing from Portsmouth,it looks very much to me that Nugent has not been holding out for a move to Everton but more like another £10K a week from Pompey. The local paper has him in further talks with ’Arry’ today and he’s expected to sign once the bread on the table!
