The Mail Bag

Believe it or not...

The Copa America is reaching the end and it has been a great tournament with some fantastic games. A lot of the players in the tournament have either signed on for new clubs or are targets for a move.

Everton was yesterday linked with Argentinian midfielder Juan Roma Riquelme. The 29-year-old midfielder spent last part of the season on loan at River Plate. There are also other clubs mentioned as possible new destinations for Riquelme, but yesterday Everton was the club rumoured to be first in line for his signature.

Jesus, that’s some communication lag.
Care to shed some light on any other stories from the same time? English smoking ban set to come into force, Gordon Brown to take over as PM?

See Riquelme rumour has legs (12/06) [Rumour Mill]

The rumour that just won’t go away.
I think we would all love it to happen, but we’re Everton, so it won’t.

It might be published in the mailbag in a few minutes, but I actually wrote a piece about Riquelme - and that I do not consider him to be the right signing for Everton right now.

I’d love a player of his stature and quality here, but I’m not sure he’ll adapt to England and the English football. And his arrival would mean Cahill or Arteta, or both, would not play in their optimal position, if they play at all that is.

If we’re going to spend big on a star, there are better options than Riquelme IMHO.

Aye you’re right Erik, signing Riquelme would be terrible for the club (!)

I suspect that the whole Riquelme thing is a bit of a UFO sighting, but what do we know about him and how he might fit into our developing, increasingly successful club?

When we drew Villareal(while the shite were playing Prestatyn or someone) I noticed that this Liga team was laced with Argentine internationals. My Spanish mates, who are usually better informed about the Prem than your average Brit, didn’t know much about him. Six months later they were announcing - to me - that he was the one to watch. I had worked that one out for myself by now, thanks.

He is the kind of player who thrives in a strong, even workman-like team. He doesn’t take anyone’s ’position’, because strictly speaking, he hasn’t got one. He takes two or three of the opposition out of the game for most of the game. He can run around a bit - you try playing for Argentina if you can’t - but generally walks into good positions. Not a lazy player.

So Tim, Lee and Leon would be ideal team mates. Mikel? You would see so many team changes in the opposition just to worry about this threat. He needs a solid quick back who can pass a ball. And a mobile attack, who can also finish. Other midfield finishers will add to their totals with such a player making it happen.

We are on the way to this kind of team, but I fear that I’ll see the Mothership land in the back yard before Riquelme pulls on our Royal Blue Jersey

Riquelme did in fact return to his home-side Boca Juniors and not River Plate. This decision was based on his dissafection with the coach at Villareal, not being selected and his Mother’s illness. Riquelme was also apparently approached by alex Ferguson last summer and declined the offer to join Manchester United citing family reasons and his reluctance to play in a country that does not speak his native tongue. By all accounts Riquelme has starred in the Copa America, the only links with Everton would appear to be that he played against us for Villareal, the spurilous internet rumour and the laughable test page scenario. I would also love the guy to join Everton but with Kenwright in charge expect nothing more than the usual journeyman shite we are being linked with.
