After gaining European qualification, I was expecting a least 4 new players in this summer preferably at left back, right back and two new wingers or maybe a striker. I can now sarcasticaly congratulate Moyes on once again for fucking up our chances of taking a step forward, just like two years ago, but the worrying thing is we had a few players in by this stage two years ago. The later he leaves it, the less time the new players will have to settle in and get used to the way we play by playing in friendlies.

If we don't improve this summer than I can never see us qualifying for Europe for years to come unless we get investment, which is very unlikely. We've already got Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham who have much better starting 11 and a better squad then us, now we have the problem of an ever improving West Ham, Newcastle and Portsmouth. Huge investment in Man City and investment in other teams around us. Not only this but are team isn't much better than Blackburn (possible investment soon), Aston Villa's (has investment) and Bolton. After finishing 6th and with the possiblity of taking the team even further and maybe breaking into the top 4 again, you certainly wouldn't expect us to finish in the bottom half which is now definatley a possibility.

To make things worse, who have we got left to sign? All players who Moyes said 'players who just can't break into the top 4 sides' have signed for the teams similar to us, and the only targets that I can think of, Richardson and Smith, both have fierce competition for their signatures.

As much as I hate reading the sport in the Echo and the post, I am addicted to it, and once again no news in the Echo ? just Moyes chatting shit again about pre-season friendlies (like I give one). One signing would do me, anyone will do just to actually say that he's tried.

We are now well and truely fucked, there's no-one actually left to sign that will improve us, so goodbye Europe.

Oh for God's sake, I am getting truly sick of reading this kind of rubbish. Will you people please get a grip of yourselves. Moyes has proved time and again that Everton's prospects cannot be predicted based on some selected consequences that happen to typify your perception of the close-season so far.

Bottom line: anything is possible. We could buy no-one and still kick some arse this season. We could buy Riquelme and sink like a stone. And there are a myriad of classically yo-yo Moyes scenarios in between. Do you really think sharing yours with the greater Bluenose populace is that worthwhile? Please, take your own particular "reality", input it to FM and have at it. Just don't bore us with the details.

Michael, I agree wholeheartedly with your comment. Reading the mailbag just makes me depressed. We?ll just have to wait until the season starts to see how we go.

We might even find that Baz is a miracle worker and that there?ll be no injuries. I suspect Cahill and Arteta (and Anichebe) will get suspended at some point but hopefully not all at the same time.

Who knows, AJ might get some penalties!

Keep positive and cheer on the team whoever?s in it.

Oh dear is it silly season on the mail bag front, there is nothing to complain about, so your just going to complain?

I fully back the current stance Everton and Moyes play in the transfer market. The current climate is that it is inflated and thus players are over priced - fact. It is also well known that Everton are not swimming in money now. That isn’t the current regimes fault - surely that can be seen. It has improved and is getting better. Nugent looks a good prospect, but he is unproven in top flight football even if he has played for England, that means nothing nowadays, Carlton Palmer played for England a few times, would you have had him pull on an Everton shirt?? I suspect not. Koumas, £5.3mill for an average player. Sorry but I would have paid £2mill tops for him. He would have been a squad player if he came, he is no better than Ossie and I think that will be proven over time. At least Ossie gives his whole and will never be doubted. I couldn’t say we would be able to rely on Koumas for that. The bottom line is that we do want to compete, but at the current inflated rates it just isn’t possible. One thing you have to remember is the majority of the Everton squad now have been together for a few years and this promotes the team from within. I know for fact (as should you) that Wigan, Villa, Bolton, West Ham, even Tottenham and all the other teams vying for 4th place, have not got that, and that ’team’, that spirit is something that will carry us through when it gets tough. Do you think the others mentioned will be able to stick together in a similar fashion?? No I didn’t think so.
Be patient, we are going forward, just not at light speed. I would rather we do what we are now, than say what happened before the current regime came in, and you must remember how bad that got?

I would rather us get ourselves stable, and free of debt, than finance our future like leeds did. I think its also unlikely that a billionaire figure is likely to appear and be willing to invest more than all these other foreigners. Even if they did, where?s the guarentee that we will be any better off?

The thing that scares me about this trend is; what happens if the investor gets bored and pulls out taking as much of their invested money with them? They are not in this for fun afterall.

Without that magical ?Bill Kenwright with Billions? figure i think we have no choice but to continue to be cautious, continue to look for the cahills and artetas out there, and continue the excellent work of the academy. We need to Ride the storm, box clever and who knows; if the bubble bursts on these foreign investors we may even be left in a very strong position.

Lads, look where we were when Moyes took over from Smith. We?re giving out that we aren?t breaking into the top 4! Jesus a couple of years ago we were happy to be outa the bottom 4. 12th was an alright season. We had Mark Pembridge, Paul Gasgoingne and David Ginola in our team! We thought we were great because we had the odd international player in our team.

We signed Cahill and bent the year we came 4th, and we sold out best player at Christmas.

we?l be grand!

I genuinely feel sorry for Moyes as once again what looks likely to be a very prohibitive transfer budget and the inflated market along with a lack of genuine quality we struggle to add to the squad. Moyes tends to do his shopping in the British market, which like everything in this country is vastly inflated. Developing the youth is one way of operating but scouting and buying overseas now must be an imperative for a Club without the financial muscle to compete with Fulham, Wigan and Portsmouth.

What makes me laugh is that Shaun Wyder was expecting four new players but claims Moyes has fucked it up already.

Despite the fact that we already have one of those new faces (Jagielka) and there are still seven weeks to find the other three.

Really we should count Lukas Jutkiewicz as transfer number two, after all he has been given a squad number.

My point is still seven weeks to get three more transfers and make Shaun ’jump the gun’ Wyder happy.

Shaun, don’t be too harsh on David Moyes as I’m sure he would love to have £30 million to spend. However, the truth is we don’t and will not under our current owner and board !

Why do people keep posting on here that we can?t ?compete? with Portsmouth, Wigan (even Fulham) when they decide to pay more for what are not exactly earth shattering talents (Koumas, Richardson etc)? I see Everton refusing to pay more than is prudent for these players, not competition.

If I decide to buy something on say eBay, I set a limit to myself and decide a value. I don?t just keep competing until I?ve paid £150 for say a book worth £20. Some do, because they get desperate. Wigan paying £5.3M(cough!) for Koumas just seems like desperation to me, and believe me, if I was a Wigan supporter (Titus Bramble FFS!!!) I would be desperate too.

The last true competition I saw with these clubs - the only one that really counts - we didn?t seem to do badly in.

Transfers - and especially lots of transfers - very often destabilise a side and set them backwards rather than improve, something which I think is very high in Moyes? thinking.

Add to the squad, but only if it improves what you?ve got.

I’m a bit confused by how this transfer system works. Could someone help me out?

How many points do we get per signing?

10   Posted 13/07/2007 at 11:57:22

fair enough koumas, richardson and possibly baines and nugent were overpriced for their respective talents however what worries me is when a player of quality who is worth the money and take us to the next level ie defoe, van de vaart, babbel or requelme comes on to the market we have not a flying shits hope of signing them,

moyes is a good manager who knows what he is doing and who he wants however he needs the backing to compete
Dutch Schaffaer
11   Posted 13/07/2007 at 12:15:00

I agree with wes bray about it being dissappointing that Everton cannot spend massively on quality players and yes we have no hope of signing an £10 million player even if Moyes agreed he was worth the money.

But its not the dreaded end of our club as we know it. I would rate Arteta as a £10 million player and Moyes picked him up for an amazing £2.5M.

Moyes has an eye for bargains, Arteta, Cahill & Lescott were all purchased for modest prices and I would argue you could add them to the same class as defoe, van de vaart, babbel or requelme.

AJ was actually fairly expensive by our standards but I bet we could sell him now for £12 million. I hope Phil Jagielka will soon be regarded as another Cahill, Arteta or Lescott success.

Moyes will still bring high class players to Goodison, he just has to look harder to find them, which is why the transfers are slow at Everton. It is still possible to unearth a £10 million player for a relatively low price and we are lucky that Moyes has the ability to do so.

Rather than make my own comment- I thought it best to let DM speak himself (quote taken from Everton TV interview last night)

?I do not have a big enough pool of money at my disposal just to go and throw it about here and there.

?I have got the ability to make one good signing and there is also the facility in place to bring in a couple of loan deals.

?But when I make this signing, I have got to be really sure he will be an improvement on what we have got here. I want to get that main business out of the way before I starting looking at loan deals.?
Gaz Hughes
13   Posted 13/07/2007 at 12:19:10

The interview with Moyes shows categorically that he wants to buy players but has no money. He says explicitly that Wigan, Fulham etc have more money than us now. I?ve criticised him a lot but feel sorry for him now. I?m certain that money has been put away for the new stadium tho Kenwright will never admit that. My hatred for what that snake has done for our club grows ever deeper
Steve Williams
14   Posted 13/07/2007 at 12:45:33

Well Billy with Moyes making the comments of loan facilities being available why not Manny- we know what he’s about and how good would that be to have him at least for the next season- not as good as signing him permanently but 12 million is too rich for us as I’d say maybe 8 to 9 million at best is avaiable (that would equate to a good signing based on Moyes words in my mind)- any wide midfielders come in that price bracket that peeps can think of?

A wide midfielder at 8-9 million and Manny- not all we hoped for - but would that represent a starting point?

So called "Fans" like you make me sick. Try getting behind the Manager for once. It’s a bit harder than a Play Station game you know. Why slag him off - he is doing is best with very limited money - again not his fault - and he is quite right in saying that some of the spending by Managers is irresponsible. Makes you sick when the shite across the road can splash the cash they way they are doing so - but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are going to win the Premiership next season. They slagged Chelsea off for buying the title - what do they think they are now trying to do? They were the second biggest spenders in the transfer market anyway last season and we still beat them 3 - 0 and drew 0 - 0 with our lads.

I for one would rather see our team get there on merit, good comaradrie, and hard work than have a MacDonald’s sign over my Club’s gate. No that’s not sour grapes that’s the truth.

Oh shame on anyone who dares to criticise Moyes or Kenwright. How dare you!
Last time we qualified for Europe we fucked it up because we didnt strengthen the squad when it was obvious we needed to. Some of us do not want that to happen again. We trusted Moyes and Kenwright then and where did that get us. Now we should have money to buy some decent players with the extra from television but we don?t. Please do not be fooled by Moyes? comments about players being overvalued - the simple truth is that we havent got any money to buy anyone. My advice is to make sure you all watch the first UEFA cup game home and away because you wont see another one.

There is a lot of panic regarding new players when you talk to other blues, but the worst thing is when fans from clubs that finished below us are laughing at our poor showing during the summer transfer market.
I do trust DM but not BK. We really do need to add numbers to our squad or risk having a poor season. I believe we have a good chance in the UEFA cup providing our key players stay fit or we have the quality to replace them when needed, NOT Beattie or VDM,they are not good enough anymore and only weaken the team.
I just hope that we can tempt one major name and some other players that will turn out like Cahill and Arteta.
The club does not need people turning against them but we all should get behind the manager and squad and look forward to an exciting prospect next season on Thursday nights.

It seems as though Moyes has enough money for one big signing. It could have been Nugent but clearly he feels the player wasn’t good enough and a striker wasn’t top priority. It could have been Koumas but again he clearly felt it was too much of a risk on a player who hardly set the Premiership on fire a couple of seasons ago.

Moyes is taking his time, doing his research, making sure that the one big player he does sign is well worth the money and is going to improve the squad.

Maybe it will be Fernandez or maybe Baines or maybe someone else. Lets not rush Moyes, let him make his choice in his own time.

Once Moyes has that big signing nailed down I expect a couple of smaller deals possibly loans to boost the numbers and away we go.

19   Posted 13/07/2007 at 13:36:10

Personally, I am glad DM is showing restraint in buying players. We all know that he doesn?t have much money to spend, therefore, I am happy to see hime being frugal.
Would you all be happier if he spent 6 million (6million FFS) on Nugent. A championship player, with no previous Premiership experience. Strikers is one area where we are reasonably ok.
I despair sometimes. Some of you would have Moyes spending money he doesn?t have, or paying over the odds for average players and I include Koumas in that. How he is worth 5.3 million I will never know.
Moyes is not stupid, he knows we need more numbers, but he also knows that Nugent is not worth 6 mill, Koumas is not worth 5.3 and Richardson is not worth 5.5.
I for one am glad that the little money we do have is not being wasted on mediocre players!

Although disappointed over the lack of transfer activity, I do have faith.

Who knows what is going on behind closed doors?

A few seasons ago people tipped us for relegation, we finished fourth, with what was the smallest squad in the premiership. Who’s to say we can’t do that again.

Have faith everyone, our manager knows what he is doing and he will only bring in players that are right for the club and are not over-valued.
David Barks
21   Posted 13/07/2007 at 13:55:51

I am so sick of these people saying we are going to fail just as we did two seasons ago. Would you all just go read Dutch Schaffaer’s article. He lists the starting lineup we had for Europe two seasons ago and shows our current starting lineup. It is plain to see for anyone who has a brain just how superior a squad we are today than we were then. It was a very good piece and I was actually going to write a similar one yesterday but the server was down. Well done Dutch. And we have signed a couple of players already with Jagielka and Lucas, but you could also throw Da Silva in there as well. Moyes wouldn’t have signed him up this season if he didn’t think he could be useful.

But all this talk about how poor a team we have really is pathetic. If we are so poor how did we take 4 points off the reds and Arsenal, draw Chelsea in a game we should have one, give Manu U. a run for their money, beat Spurs with 10 men, and crush the mighty Portsmouth. So they’ve signed a few players, they can still only field 11 at a time.
David Barks
22   Posted 13/07/2007 at 14:13:47

And I would also like to remind some people that money doesn’t expire. If we do have money and are just wanting to spend it smartly we will still have that money next season, putting us ahead of these other teams spending stupidly on overpriced average players.
Shaun Wyder
23   Posted 13/07/2007 at 15:54:42

Criticise what ive said as much as you want but I am speaking what I think is the truth, we need investment and its about time Kenwright realised that because we have obviously had offers if other clubs like Birmingham (proposal), Man City, Aston Villa and Blackburn (proposal) have all had investment or proposals.

Yes i fully agree that we should continue to look at the likes of Arteta and Cahill, bargain players, but you look in the championship now and tell me who’s really good enough to play in the premiership that hasn’t yet been snapped up. Hardly anyone, and if there is then they will be going for a fee similar to Koumas which was ridiculous.

It may be Moyes, it may be Kenwright, I dont know, but its about time we started to get some answers from then because and I know for a fact other fans will be asking questions right now, and I am sick of the club giving no answers to anything. Can anyone hold their hand up now and honestly say that they don’t want answers?

I’ve been away working on some confidential work that has kept me away from civilisation for a short while and what do I see on my return to TW, Dutch "hides behind a nickname" has returned just what does the no nicknames mean on postings? TW also seems to have been swamped by the rose tinted glasses brigade. For christ’s sake where’s the balance gone?

I predict a lower table yo yo season thanks to the club failing to take the next step again and my personal viewpoint is it’s thanks to Billy Bullshitter buying into the asbodome, build it and who will come Billy? What exactly will they be coming to watch? Mediocrity and falling further behind the chasing pack never mind the leaders, the current management are making this club a laughing stock, love the club my arse.

Well said Mick Wrende, unless we get an amazing stroke of luck with some sunday league team of farmers expect another humiliation early exit from Europe and plenty of gloating again from the RS.

Can people please STOP listing Lucas Whateverhisnameis (sorry can’t spell or pronouce it !!) as a summer signing. The kid is 17 yrs old and will be nowhere near the first team this season....you know it , I know it & most of all Moyes knows it!!. We did the same last year when we signed the lad from Oldham, Spencer I think his name is...how many games has he played in the last 12 mths !?! Get real!!
Deep down we all knew this would happen as soon as Moyes warned us at the end of May that we would have to be ’patient’ as any transfer business would not be done as quickly as last year. Every piece of transfer business we get involved in becomes a long drawn out saga.Even the deal to buy the one player we have signed took nearly two MONTHS to complete. Moyes has more or less admitted he has hardly any funds to spend so don’t expect too many new faces in the near future. I was angry with him but having read his quotes I just feel sorry for him.
When he took over Kenwright promised transparency and that he would always keep the fans involved...Yeah right Mr Chairman glad to see you kept your word !!

He was missing for a long time from the mailbag and re-appears when things seem to be hotting up due to lack of transfers. Telling us to be patient and wait for the one big signing.
Wasn’t there a train of thought that he was a plant at one time.

In terms of spending power Everton are sadly currently behind Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle, Aston Villa, West Ham, Man City and possibly Sunderland. In terms of spending power we are outside the Top 10 alongside Portsmouth, Boro, Blackburn and Bolton. Considering we are so low down on the spending power league its pretty amazing that a Top 10 Premiership finish is the least we will accept.

And saying Lucas Jutkiewicz is the new Scott Spencer is stupid. Jutkiewicz has been given a squad number this season, something Spencer has never had, so that indicates Jutkiewicz could play a part at some stage and has to be regarded as Everton’s second summer signing.
Neil Vaughan
31   Posted 14/07/2007 at 09:46:09

So he’s got a squad number so what!!?? Ruddy’s got a squad number so has Boyle & Viardasson...How many games do you expect to see them play. We need players to improve the TEAM not just the squad. The similarities between Jutkiewicz & Spencer are very striking (pardon the pun)....Up & coming teenage forward from lower league club...possible potential for the future..Oh sorry there’s one difference one’s got a squad number. Just look at how many youngsters in recent years have been given squad numbers and never got anywhere near the first team...Greead,Fox, Hughes...need I go one.
I hate to sound like a profit of doom but please John ’wake up and smell the coffee’ !!
